You probably knew that August is not only National Goat Cheese Month and International Peace Month (which probably explains the Norks backing off), but were you aware that we’re now 20 days into National Shooting Sports Month? Our friends at the National Shooting Sports Foundation have come up with a handy list of ways to observe the occasion…and have some fun while doing it.

The excitement of having your shot break a flying clay target or knock over a steel plate (clang!) and then sharing the fun of that experience awaits all who participate in National Shooting Sports Month this August. The National Shooting Sports Foundation declared this 31-day celebration to encourage you to spend trigger time at a local shooting range. Here are 10 ways to celebrate National Shooting Sports Month. If you think of others, please share them on social media and use the hashtag #LetsGoShooting.

BRING SOMEONE NEW
There’s nothing quite like seeing the excitement on a friend’s face after they take their first shots. Bring a friend or family member to the range for the first time.

TRY SOMETHING NEW
Are you a hardcore handgun shooter? Then pick up a shotgun and give sporting clays a try. Are you primarily a shotgun shooter? Then hone your handgun skills or sign up for a local International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) match.

REDISCOVER SHOOTING
Haven’t shot in a while? Dust off your shooting gear and head to the range, preferably with a friend. Learn a new game, like action pistol or skeet shooting.

FIND AN EVENT NEAR YOU
Find National Shooting Sports Month events at ranges and retailers across the country. If there’s not an event listed in your area, use the website to locate a range near you to enjoy a fun, safe day of target shooting.

MAKE IT A DATE
Ask your spouse, partner, boyfriend or girlfriend to go shooting. You’ll have a great time together. By the way, women are the fastest growing segment in target shooting (and hunting), and more gear than ever is being designed for their fit and comfort.

CASH IN ON DEALS
Retailers and ranges will be offering specials during National Shooting Sports Month. You can find a participating business near you and take advantage of these offers.

PRACTICE FIREARM SAFETY
The shooting sports are safe. As a responsible gun owner, you can demonstrate how to safely handle your firearms on the firing line and securely store them when they’re not in use.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM AND TRADITION
In addition to passing on the great tradition of target shooting, you can educate others about the unique American freedoms that make participating possible.

SHARE IT!
#LetsGoShooting is the theme of National Shooting Sports Month. Share the hashtag and your experiences on your social media networks, and remind others to give target shooting a try.

WIN A GREAT PRIZE!
Finally, enter the sweepstakes and have a chance to win great prizes from National Shooting Sports Month sponsors.

  1. Buy a new gun. Makes you happy, makes manufacturers happy, makes retailers happy and wat for it… it pisses off the antis. An all around win if you ask me.

  2. I’m trying to shoot(and buy). Too many pesky bills. And my LGS refused to put a cheap AR on layaway. After I buy 8 guns from them…no more free internet publicity from me😡

    • Hah! You got that right. It starts in the hi-90s before the sun comes up, then jumps to ‘microwave your brain’ once the deadly orb rises.

I still get out about every other week, but I’m setting up in the dark, start shooting when there is barely enough light to see my targets and packing up before the sun breaks the top of the dirt berm.

  3. I shoot on a pretty regular basis but I have spent this August making the range better and ordered a bunch of new targets. But the recommendation of buying a new gun hasn’t fallen on deaf ears.

  4. Ok… Two things:
    Augh¡!
The borfriend (?) MUST get her thumb position corrected or the “take a date shooting” is gonna turn into “take a date for stitches”.

    Ending on a better note:
WHERE IS THAT RIFLE ROOM ??
I can spend hours wandering around a hardware store.
I’ll have to bring provisions and a sleeping bag to check that place out.

  5. i shoved an 870 in the face of a suspect in a domestic armed with a handgun last night, the 12 ga bore aimed at him made him reconsider his foolish life choices and comply. Does that count as having fun during shooting sports month?

    • “Does that count as having fun during shooting sports month?”

Only if he ‘Made Your Day’

(No trial, no report to file…) 😉
