Taurus has added a new model to its 1911 Commander series with the introduction of the 1911 Commander 9mm Luger. From the company’s release:

Built with the same specifications and dimensions as the original 1911 Commander .45 ACP, the new model is chambered for 9mm Luger and offers additional capacity at nine rounds.

Since its introduction, the 1911 Commander has served as a reliable defensive handgun for shooters who favor the robust 1911-style construction, features, and full grip but prefer a shorter profile for daily or concealed carry. The all-steel slide and frame in matte black finish combined with the aggressively checkered grip delivers a substantive feel in the hand and the kind of durability that has made this handgun popular for those who demand dependability and reliability in their home defense or personal carry firearm.

The Single Action Only 1911 Commander provides the familiar hammer-fire design in conjunction with a grip safety, manual safety, and firing pin block. With a barrel length of 4.2 inches, an overall length of eight inches, and an extended beaver tail, the 1911 Commander 9mm Luger is both comfortable to shoot and to carry. Drift-adjustable Novak front and rear sights ensure an optimal sight picture and fine-tune zero for any shooting style.

The new 1911 Commander 9mm Luger is now shipping to authorized dealers and distributors nationwide.

  1. First, it’s a Taurus. Decent handgun. Owned a revolver or two over the years. But, a 1911 in 9mm? Really? Maybe in 38 Super if I lived in Latin America. Yeah, like that’s gonna happen. Well, maybe if I woke up to a new ice age tomorrow. Rather go there than Miami.

  2. I like it in theory, but I’ve heard nothing a lot of bad things about Taurus 1911s as far as reliability and parts breaking.

    • My first, last and only Taurus was a 1911 years ago and the fit and finish was sub par to say the least, first mag jammed every other round using 230 gr ball ammo and front sight flew off after the 3rd magazine. Sold it and will never buy another Taurus.

    • I’ve heard the same. Rock Island gets better reviews. It’s cool that Taurus offers it with front strap checkering. Ruger doesn’t even offer that on their much more expensive line.

  3. If one is buying this as your only handgun, .45acp makes a lot of sense. Other the other hand if you have a ton of 9mm’s, like me, a 9mm 1911 makes a ton of sense. My 1911 is not going to be a carry gun – it’s going to be a fun gun for the range. Since between the wife and I we have four other 9mm’s, it just makes sense to have a 1911 in 9mm too.

    • Vince, it’s just me and I have at least four 9mm. Hardly a “ton.” Have to open the safe to count the 1911 .45 ACPs. 1911 = .45 ACP.

  4. F Taurus. If you have to use their Lifetime Warranty, you’ll see that the QC is worse there than it is in production. Spend a little more, and buy something decent. F Taurus.

    • Heck, you don’t even have to spend more. Rock Island Arms 1911s run the same price (an in some cases, cheaper) than Taurus 1911s and I’ve never had any issues with my barebones RIA GI model, and a lot of other people seem to like them as well.

    • I bought my daughter a Taurus Millenium Pro and it was always reliable. Her only complaint was the fireball and the report fropm that short pbarrelled 9mm.

  5. Not a bad offering, but I’ll pass. At the price, there are other options. And not to put too fine a point on it, I’ve been burned by Taurus before. YMMV.
