We told you about the potential dangers of broadcasting your valuables all over the internet in a recent post. Still good advice. A lot of people use Facebook and Twitter as stream-of-consciousness outlets to tell all their “friends” every fleeting thought that comes to mind [Just had the most awesome chocolate muffin. YUM!]. Now the next step in this, um, evolution seems to have happened during a standoff with police…

I’m currently in a standoff … kinda ugly, but ready for whatever. I love u guyz and if I don’t make it out of here alive that I’m in a better place and u were all great

Jason Valdez was holed up in a hotel room with a woman who may or may not have been a hostage. The boys from the local SWAT team had him surrounded (they had a warrant for felony and misdemeanor drug possession charges against him). So what did Jason do during the 16 hour standoff? Why, he posted to his Facebook page and added new friends. What would you have done?

At 2:04 a.m., Valdez posted two pictures of himself and the woman.”Got a cute `Hostage’ huh,” Valdez wrote of the photographs.

Not only did Valdez keep his on-line peeps updated, he added a dozen new friends! And some of those friends provided more than just moral support. One friend posted the fact that there was a SWAT officer hiding in the bushes.

“Thank you homie,” Valdez replied. “Good looking out.”

Can you say, ‘obstruction of justice’?

It doesn’t appear that the Ogden, UT police were monitoring Valdez’s posts in real time. Looks like standard equipment for SWAT officers in the future will need to include a tactical iPad.

Valdez shot himself in the chest when officers stormed the hotel room and is in critical but stable condition. The woman was unharmed. No word at this time as to her Facebook status.

  1. Of course, who better to have a following and act is if he has some agenda, than a loser facing possession charges. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. Of course he would have followers-we live in a day and age when serial killers are idolized and even get married in prison. It’s the blind following the blind, with wanna be hippies ready to protest anything, not even stopping to question their “cause” or if they even know why they are rallying. I would imagine that the whole story is that this loser is a drug dealer who decided to put on the “Billy Jack” act for his 15 minutes of fame. What a world we live in today.

    • Clearly the SWAT team should have commented on his facebook post. I mean, maybe it could have be peacefully resolved if they’d just asked him to come out nicely and promised they wouldn’t shoot him and clicked the ‘like’ button on a few of his posts.
