The quote of the day is presented by Guns.com

A raft of new laws expanding gun rights including school marshals, weapons in apartments, carrying a handgun after a natural disaster and concealed carry in churches were already set to go into effect in Texas today. And after the Odessa shooting yesterday, the news media and the gun control industry are having a collective aneurism about it.

The shooting came exactly two weeks after a gunman opened fire further west in the state at a Walmart shopping center in El Paso. After Saturday’s mass shooting, a number of politicians responded by calling for stronger gun restrictions and national gun reform, a common refrain after mass shootings in recent months.

But the state of Texas has instead gone the other direction. As KSATreported, the Texas Legislature had passed a number of laws set to go into effect on September 1 that loosen restrictions on guns, allowing firearms in more public places like schools and churches. The laws were passed with the support of the National Rifle Association, which said the passage of these laws was “highly successful,” even as groups aimed at ending gun violence warned that they would make schools and communities less safe.

As KSAT noted, – in a report published before the mass shooting in Odessa – the Texas Legislature has responded to mass shootings at a church in Sutherland Springs and a high school in Santa Fe by loosening restrictions on guns, even as other states have called for more restrictions in the wake of other mass shootings. That included laws allowing more teachers to carry guns in schools.

  1. If more guns equals more safety, the case for that concept will now be made in Texas. “They” will either be right, or they will be wrong, and with all the media noise about it, there will be almost no way to hide from the truth when it comes out.

    • The stats already show that more guns _doesn’t_ mean more crime, that more guns correlate with less crime.

      Media: ya, so?

They only live for their Leftist, Statist narrative.

      Sad.

    • I read the other day that only 12% of the population think that the homicide rate has gone down in the last 25-30 years when it’s actually been cut in half. The media will wave the bloody shirts in the air every time someone gets shot in TX and keep their mouths shut about the crime rate going down there because they have an agenda and truth is always subservient to the agenda. The fact that you think they’ll report it either way only shows your naivety.

      • I was talking to an older family member recently that’s a lifelong democrat, and watches MSNBC and CNN. To give you context, she has worked on political campaigns, and has been active in the democrat party. She buys Hillary’s books and even bought Comey’s book. She reads the paper (yes the paper) and watches the news daily. She brought up the fact that it’s so crazy and dangerous now with all of the violent crime. Keep in mind that she is a senior citizen now that was an informed adult when violent crime was very high.

I said violent crime has fallen dramatically since the early 90s. It isn’t even close. At the same time, the number of firearms in this country has increased dramatically. She looked at me like I was crazy. I don’t think she believed me.

        • I’m sure she didn’t. But you may have made her just curious enough to check her facts, which could be a transformative event for her, realizing that the people she trust have all been lying to her all these years.

        • “I said violent crime has fallen dramatically since the early 90s. It isn’t even close. At the same time, the number of firearms in this country has increased dramatically.”

Did you show her charts on crime rates and presumed rise in gun ownership?

        • “Sam, I don’t know if you were being sarcastic or not, but that was funny.”

I aim to please, so you aim too, please.

    • Kentucky has had these lack of restrictions for decades an in some instances since the state was formed and yet we only have problems the last 8 years when masses of ILLEGALS started flooding our state.

      • It accused me of being the Trumpster himself Oh the shame!

Time to go shopping to assuage the guilt, so what gun should I buy?

    • First, I answered “honestly”, whatever that means. The test said I was just not woke, I was deeply asleep and possibly comatose.

Then, I took the test again and this time I clicked “Scream at the sky” all the way thru.

Now I am not only the most woke person on the planet, the test is sending me a beautiful blond woman in a flannel shirt plus a new car!!!

So now I’m going out to sit on my front step and await the arrival of my new love, my new car, my new life!!!

Hope I don’t fall asleep and miss her …

      • Not very woke of them to send you a blonde woman, unless they asked your preference. Maybe you’d like an African-American transgender male, or an Asian-Pacific Islander Questioning, or a …

  2. It’s the right direction. Allow law abiding people to protect themselves instead of preventing them from protecting themselves and turning them into targets.

  3. And here I sit writing this from Northern KY, and urban area with Constitutional Carry, and no one had killed me on my doorstep yet. Huh…

    • I bet you have to spend a lot on shoes. Those white dad shoe New Balances gotta turn red in a matter of a few feet right? The media said there would be blood in the streets.

      • “The media said there would be blood in the streets.”

Florida was one of the first states to go concealed carry shall-issue in 1987 (?).

You should have seen the ‘Letters to the editor’ in the local fish-wrapper down here. They were predicting gun battles for parking spaces on a daily basis. All the tired tropes were used. Even “Blood in the streets!”

And then, something strange happened. *Nothing* happened. None of what they predicted came true (obviously).

The Leftists have far too much invested in being anti-gun at this point. Even if we get some form of declaration by SCOTUS on the ‘NY Pistol’ case that “to keep and bear arms” actually means what it says, it will not stop them. They have already decided as soon as SCOTUS eventually swings Leftist again, they will slap down Heller, McDonald and NY Pistol (if it goes our way) like the ‘Dred Scott’ case was (correctly) overturned. And with self-righteousness.

        This war is just beginning…

        • In Dred Scott v. Sandford, Chief Justice wrote ” For if they were so received, and entitled to the privileges and immunities of citizens, it would exempt them from the operation of the special laws and from the police [p417] regulations which they considered to be necessary for their own safety. It would give to persons of the negro race, who were recognised as citizens in any one State of the Union, the right to enter every other State whenever they pleased, singly or in companies, without pass or passport, and without obstruction, to sojourn there as long as they pleased, to go where they pleased at every hour of the day or night without molestation, unless they committed some violation of law for which a white man would be punished; and it would give them the full liberty of speech in public and in private upon all subjects upon which its own citizens might speak; to hold public meetings upon political affairs, and to keep and carry arms wherever they went. And all of this would be done in the face of the subject race of the same color, both free and slaves, and inevitably producing discontent and insubordination among them, and endangering the peace and safety of the State.”

Imagine that – blacks like Dred Scott with civil rights including the right “to keep and carry arms wherever they went” just like the civil rights held by whites. What happened to that civil right “to keep and carry arms wherever they went”? What we have now does not match well with the rights held in 1857.

        • “What we have now does not match well with the rights held in 1857.”

Times have changed. We now are bound by precedent, tradition and history.

Besides, with the size of the population today, can you imagine the chaos and destruction that would occur if we allowed the same freedom of action by citizens as was practiced in the middle of the nineteenth century? We just can’t have that. People’s natural behavior and instincts must be regulated. The needs of the many clearly outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

        • yes the left was wrong about this…because they irrationally fear that every gun owner is a threat to them…even when the stats don’t bear that out…

  4. Meanwhile, back in Chicago, August to Date: Shot & Killed: 45, Shot & Wounded: 239, Total Shot: 284, Total Homicides: 47. The media doesn’t report this because it doesn’t fit their narrative. They don’t care when the shooter and victims are black.

    • The media cares when the demographic suits the narrative. If its black on black it’s Indiana’s fault because of their “lax” laws. If its white on black it’s “stand your ground” law’s fault. And if its cop on black it’s “racism” and “Trump’s fault”.

  5. The Left’s Goebbels media wing should put down the kool aid,get a grip on their pink panties with the black lightning bolts on them and give them a tug, there all better.

  6. Perhaps this whole thing could have been avoided if they’d relax restrictions on changing lanes without signalling. I bet they hadn’t thought of that.

    • Not actually illegal in Texas. It’s only “unsafe lane changes.” They’re not unsafe unless you hit something (gross oversimplification).

    • Correct, even though they claimed not to be coming for your arms, the ultimate goal has been the disarmament of the American people,by any and all means necessary Period.

  7. Texas continues to move away from being an anti-gun state that pretended to be pro-gun (all hat, no cattle), into an actual for real pro-gun state.

    That’s good, keep it up!

    • While we have won this Battle, Texas will be blue in a decade or so if they don’t stop immigration and start deportations.

  8. I am going deep, deep conspiracy theory on this one: it may not be a coincidence that the Odessa-Midland shooting occurred the same day Texas relaxed some gun restrictions.

Go ahead, debunk and dismiss, but, the stakes are VERY high and those that want to take away our freedoms are well-resourced and well-positioned, well- entrenched in national security. We all know that psychopaths rise to power and do not play nicely.

  9. Fact is this- the shooter targeted unarmed people at gun restricted places in EL Paso and in Odessa after the initial shots on the traffic stop he targeted unarmed people. People with guns will shoot back thats why criminals look for unarmed people. The demoncraps and liberals want no guns so they can control you. Wake up people.

  10. ” it will be easier for Texans to carry handguns…” legally.

It was just as easy to carry them illegally… you know, like criminals do?

  11. The next law Texas needs to pass is constitutional carry, and that my friends includes open carry of everything from handguns to howitzers.

Make all targets everywhere, without exception, hard targets.

    • MDH – it is highly likely that Constitutional Carry would have passed this legislative session if not for the obstruction by straus – I mean bonnen. He intentionally balled up the reading/hearing in committee to keep it from the floor. Now we have to wait for 2 more years before it can be brought up again.

  12. Noting (yet another) failed experiment in “gun regulations”Texas today rolled back restrictions that did nothing to impede a recent spree shooter, who, surprising no one, racked up big numbers by targeting unarmed victims.

  13. Bright people! They haven’t yet figured out that legal carriers are not the disease. But possibly could be the cure.

  14. The law changes in Texas were passed long before both shooting in Texas- Midland-Odessa and El Paso.

It’s unfortunate the media is taking advantage of the latest shooting to “boost its ratings “

    • @IT Shabake Just wondering what laws would prevented lunatics from murdering people. Pickup trucks, baseball bats, hammers, fertilizer and kool-aid all have been used to murder innocent people. Criminals by their very definition do not obey laws. And the government can’t keep drugs off the streets, or even a places as tightly controlled as a federal prison, they are certainly not going to keep weapons away from criminals The best defense is be prepared and fight back.

    • “…but I really think there should be certain laws”

“but I really think there should be certain laws that only the law-abiding gun owners will obey.

      There, fixed it for ya’.

  15. The media keeps writing that the law made it legal to carry in churches as if it wasn’t legal before. Before the new law became effective, the statute stated it was illegal to carry in a church, etc. There was an exception if you had a license, and the place of worship didn’t have a 30.06 sign. That basically meant it was like any other place. It was legal to carry if you had a license and there wasn’t a proper sign. The only difference now is that the statute is much clearer as to what the law is, and it is now a Class C misdemeanor (think traffic offense) instead of a Class A (almost a felony).
