This Demolition Ranch video’s been up since yesterday. It’s already been seen over a million times. That’s impressive. Less impressive — at least to my eyes — is the test itself. What’s the point? Because guns! ‘Merica! Etc. I’d like to see Demolition Ranch guy shoot a block of osmium. And watch the results in slow motion. Not me, the video.

  1. The problem with Osmium is that it’s very brittle, and it has very low compressibility, and won’t “flow” like lead.

Egads, you can smell the Axe Body Spray just from the video….

      • Perhaps, I just haven’t seen any (to be fair haven’t watched many) that aren’t an “exploration” of the painfully obvious, or what gun guys have known forever.

Which is the “Hey Brah, Watch This!” kinda buffoonery that bores me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great when kids learn something, and it’s great when they get into the sport. It’s just annoying as F when it’s sold as something ‘novel’ and lapped up as that being truth, instead of being a ‘rite of passage’ that millions before them have made.

I dunno, to me it’s like the old KJW “tricks”. back in the day. She was kinda cute and could kinda shoot, but we should have been impressed (somehow) because it’s on YT and (semi) slickly packaged..I’m a million miles from Miculek as are most of my friends – yet we rode motorcycle off-road and shot balloons too, whoopdeee-effen-do. Kids do that a lot – provided with guns, bike, and a place to do it.

        • Correction: Super cute and could really shoot.

When it comes to things like Demolition Ranch and KJW’s mild trick shots, and even Miculek’s demonstrations of cyborg-like precision, it’s all just for fun anyway. Relax and enjoy.

    • “I’m curious why you would like to see him shoot osmium, Robert.”

Lead is dense stuff. Osmium is roughly twice as dense than lead.

RF may have been contemplating a bullet made from Osmium, and the effect it would have on its ballistic coefficient.

I *suspect* a projectile made of it would exit the barrel as a puff of glass-like shards.

What may work best is finely-pulverized Osmium mixed into molten Lead with a copper jacket. The Osmium wouldn’t alloy with the Lead, as Lead’s melting point is under 700 F and Osmium’s melt point is around 5,000 F.

It would still be an expensive experiment, but doubtfully worth the gains you would get from its enhanced BC.

Who knows, though. There’s no shortage of people on You Tube shooting a brand-new iPhone for grins…

      • For those neanderthals who still believe that mass beats velocity, now they can have a 230 gr. 5.56mm bullet thanks to the wonder of osmium.

        • When you *combine* mass with velocity, you get a brutal knock-down punch.

From what little of physics in ‘skool’ that sunk in my tiny brain, velocity is more of a multiplier on delivered energy, IIRC.

A.17 HMR bullet of Osmium at .17 HMR *velocities* would be a nasty thing to get hit by.

I can see the attraction to contemplating the result…

    • I can’t think of a Demo Ranch vid that I didn’t enjoy, but I don’t watch all of them. This one was better then I thought it would be. But seeing the 50 BMG is always awe inspiring, especially next to other common rounds.

    I’ll do it, RF.

You just supply the Osmium. The Demo Ranch block was about 30-40 kg or so of Lead.

A 1 kg block of Osmium will run about $13,000 USD:

You have my mailing addy when I won the caption contest.

How many kilos should I expect? 🙂

      • Please, should RF grant your wish (and we both know he won’t, but still) do stay far away.

I don’t want to read about your Darwin Award nomination.

  3. Fun video but I’ve shot 3″ iron blocks with BMG AP. The spall came all the way back and peppered us, and the round was lodged in the block, sticking halfway out, the tungsten still surgical sharp.

    Good times.

  4. He really needs to get a high-speed video camera to show some of his stuff in slow motion.

Other than that, I was disappointed that he didn’t use some all-lead rounds for more than the .22.

  5. JTILTH? Oh, right, “Just thought I’d leave this here.”

Well, all I can say to that is YMWTCAALFCTRGNOIAAOTSAIGDTDWTHPATTSSWICCBTFLOEW!*

*Translation: You might want to consider adding a legend for cataloging the rapidly growing number of initialisms and acronyms on this site, as it’s getting difficult to decipher what the hell people are trying to say sometimes when it’s constantly couched behind the first letter of each word.

  6. Wtf, why is there a post on ttag about a demo ranch video? It was a video in the same vein as all his videos. Did you get drunk and watch this particular video and decide it was not to your taste and posting on your website about how it wasn’t interesting enough would really drive the point home that….something…..pointless whatever. Was this the first time you’d seen a demo ranch video? Maybe send Matt some Osmium; I’m sure he’d oblige you by shooting it.

  7. This guy’s demeanor is so fake and annoying, it’s like watching that Springfield Saint spot…
BTW, go check out their YouTube channel, it has 0 subscribers, the Rock River one at least has like 860 even though they uploaded only 15 videos. 😀

    • Couldn’t agree more. He’s annoying as f**k. AAF. He’s not nearly as cute as he thinks he is, it’s all so fake.

  8. His little sunglasses ad was cringe worthy, used to really like his channel, but its about revenue now, not just making fun videos and uploading them for the heck of it

  9. That was what was missing with this one, he didn’t have the go-pros set up watching the block so he could get some slow-mo.
