Another ?$500 red dot……Blah,blah,blah
While this is a bit pricey for me, I’d like to see a review of this (or other) micro red dots. Over recent weeks, two instructors have both told me they’ve switched to MRDs for their G17s and love them.
I have Red Dot Optics for my ARs, but have never tried them on sidearms.
Vortex Venom on 2x Glock pistols (17, 19) work like a charm. Prefer the top loading battery to the bottom loading. At $200, it’s a pretty good value.
Having said that, I just installed a UTG MRD for HALF that price ($89). I installed it on a .45ACP 1911. And rang 5″ steel and soda cans at 20 yards consistently. It’s brand new so time will tell if they hold, but for $90 – it’s half the price of a Burris Fast Fire or Vortex; it’s a *little* bigger side to side…
There are some MRDs that, for $90 I would recommend to my enemy just because they are terrible. However, so far so good with the UTG Venom knockoff.
It takes a little getting used to the sight picture of a red dot on a pistol since it sits a little higher. I also had to hand-modify my AlienGear holster to accommodate the RDS, however, it was easy to do, and AG told me if I messed it up, to send it back for no questions asked replacement….
I do prefer in-slide cuts as it puts the red dot closer to the barrel versus a dovetail mount. But that means (usually) a custom slide. Most custom slides seem to be cut for an RMR, but you can find them with Vortex cuts.
RDS on pistols is great once you get your presentation down so the dot is there and you’re not fishing for it.
Work better than I thought they would.
I won’t buy ANYTHING but a HOLOSUN 507TGR in GREEN. Dot with a 64 MOA Circle.
For micro sights, I want a 507k for my P365XL BUT I want a Titanium Case.
I was SHOCKED at how much better my targeting and shooting became after I acclimated myself to them.

Put the previously unobtainium Sig Romeo0 6 MOA on last month and still getting used to the sight, but wouldn’t want a smaller dot.

Great rmr’s, but hell nah. Not for that price. They are taking advantage of the shortage and inflating price, which is why their SIG equipped models jumped in price like $400 too. I love my SIG, but I would never pay more than I did for it, or any pistol for that matter. Maybe if I wait a year I can trade it for 27.5 gold bar.
Let’s see. $500 for something else that can break. Or have a battery run down. (Yeah, I know how long they can last, but they still run down.) Used red dot sights. Not impressed. Bet your life on them if you want to.
So… you use irons on rifles too?
I grew up on irons, for all things handgun, rifle, shotgun. Only recently purchased my first Red Dot Optic for one of my ARs and am impressed, though that particular AR is built for a specific duty. Glass optics for long range, Red Dot for shorter range, and iron for everything else.
IMHO, but whatever helps anyone put two rounds on center target is good.
Except for my bolt action hunting rifles, yes. They all have Leupold scopes. Several of those have open sights also. Any rifle that is primarily defensive is iron sights only.
My BAHRs are equipped with Leupolds. Good optics.
I like it but 500 bucks?!? Yeow…I like my UTG carbine length handguard. Never heard about their red dot. Have to check that out.
I have seen mixed reviews on anything UTG. Not sure I’d trust a red dot from them, unless it’s a cheapo range build like a .22

I like it yet I like my carbine length handguard. Never caught wind of their red spot. Need to look at that.
