While the good book may be beneficial for the soul, it can also be pretty handy when it comes to protecting your chest. “Rickey Waggoner, a Dayton RTA bus driver, was making a mechanical fix outside his bus when three assailants approached him and shot him in what appears to have been a gang initiation, the Dayton Daily News reported….Waggoner reportedly told police that one of the assailants was heard telling another to kill the man ‘if you want to be all the way in the club.'” We’re pretty sure we know where Rickey will be this Sunday morning . . .

More from foxnews.com:

Waggoner was shot twice in the chest at close range, but a contemporary version of the Bible, titled “The Message,” absorbed the bullets that would otherwise have killed the 49-year-old bus driver, according to police documents obtained by the newspaper.

In the interest of promoting peace and brotherly love, we’ll avoid speculation as to the caliber the yoots were using. Despite being unarmed, though, Waggoner didn’t turn the other cheek.

Waggoner was shot in the leg after he tried to wrestle the weapon away from one of the suspects, according to the newspaper. While another assailant stabbed him in the arm, Waggoner was able to grab both the gun and knife, prompting the suspects — described as being 15 to 18 years old — to flee.

While it’s probably prohibited by his employer, The Message here appears to be praise the Lord and pass the concealed carry pistols.

    • Considering their young age I’d have been happy with gunshot wounds in the buttocks, but then the victim here would have been in deep do-do.

      • You people kill me… Or someone else; when these would-be-murderers are back on the street after a year or two in Thug Academy.

Do you realize that they would have wantonly killed an innocent stranger? That’s completely psychopathic. How do you redeem that?

These animals are broken. I’m with the others: Send them back.

      • Myhmmmn, Gov. ‘ “Regardless”, of the “Yoots”, ages; Anyone, Male, Female, of legal age, or, one on a tricycle!!!… Brandishing a Weapon, in my Direction, [Especially, after hearing his “Compadres”, say, what they did!]. You’d have Absolutely, “No Other, Recourse, but, to defend yourself!….. [Avoiding, “So Called”, “Buckshot”, in the Ass!…]. An Open Fire, on All, the “Yoots”!…. As they, too, would be Carrying Guns!…. Be Realistic!… C.Y.A., At All Costs!… Believing in our Justice System, and my Right of Self Defense; “I’d Rather be “Judged”, by 12, than Carried, by 6!…

        • It’s one thing to defend yourself from violence and a completely different thing to wish death on another. Not that I’d cry for them had they taken the slow ride in the ambulance.

    • He should have just complied and given them his money and everything would be right with the world.

Oh wait they didn’t try to rob him they tried to kill him.
That never happens it must be a lie from the NRA trying to scare people into buying guns so they can make more money.

      • It was just the Knock Out Game for guys who can’t punch. Kids. Go figure.

And when they can neither punch nor shoot, what’s next?

        • That’s when the “Moms Demand Action for Sword Sense in America” platform will really take off.

    • A story from the AP would suggest that the caliber was a .25 ACP since police recovered a .25 Caliber Handgun at the scene. If so it is not surprising that a one inch thick anything stopped the bullets. What is surprising is that the perp maintained a grouping the size of the book.

      • He missed the memo about spreading your shots out around the torso.

I almost failed the practical portion of the CPL training for punching jagged holes. it would be my luck that my best groups EVER happened on a day they required the opposite….

      • I had a friend in Dayton years ago shot twice in the chest/abdomen with a .25, then went on to a long career in the Cincinnati Police department.

Another report at the same time in Dayton was a rather heavy set man (fat) who answered his door to be confronted by his GF’s ex and a .25. He took six shots to the body and was fine until a shot in the mouth knocked him unconscious. He also survived with only minor surgery and some dental work.

This was about the time I upgraded from my cheap Raven to an S&W Model 19.

  1. Surprisingly, the local police are investigating this attack as a possible hate crime. I say surprisingly because the victim is white and the attackers are allegedly black.

  2. “There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident because (Waggoner) should probably not be here,”

Yeah, HE intervened on his own behalf and that’s why he is still here. Why do people insist on crediting invisible old guys or inanimate objects with all the responsibility, rather than the people involved. I’m certain that if the almighty can guide a bible into the path of a bullet or vice versa, he could have maybe just not had the bus break down in the first place.

    • I don’t think that was the point. The point was we always read a story or see a movie where a bible over someone’s heart saves them, and here is a case where that pretty much happened in real life. God can have as much or as little to do with it as you want. I as a church goer think of it as being more of a case of, “odds are it was bound to happen some time.”

  3. I alternate my EDC bullet stopping ironical miracle books between Dawkins, The God Delusion and Hitchens, God is not Great. (Paper back)
I guess Lott’s, More Guns, Less Crime would do the trick as well, but that wouldn’t be a miracle would it.

    • When I need protection I simply use the Norwegian law. Book is thick enough to stop pretty much anything level 3A would. And if you hit them with it, you can say you threw the book on them.

    • You’re saying “Fifty Shades of Gray” would have worked as well? He would have whipped together as good a defense?

  4. This was on the local news last night. Yes local. Every day I question my decision to relocate from rural Northern Michigan. 🙁

  5. Believe what you want to. BTW …why are vile attacks on this website allowed pertaining to Christian beliefs?

    • That’s OK FFW; I’m a baptized Christian and I have spoken a number of times about abortion being murder with out being attacked for making that statement or about being a Christian. I found most of the comments to be rather funny; especially about an atheist using “Stranger in a strange land” for chest protection; one of my favorite books by RAH by the way.

      • I also have noticed that the abortion debates on this site are rather polite. Unsurprisingly, Glockentoter occasionally spews vileness towards Christianity.

        • Glockentoter occasionally spews vileness towards Christianity

I’m no fan of that guy, but “spews vileness towards Christianity?” Really? Could you be any more melodramatic?

        • I’m with General Boykin on the issue. There are times when it’s OK to think “I know my god is better than their god.” For example when their behavior shows that their god must be a crack head.

  6. Say, that brings up an interesting question. What material could someone use to improvise a “ballistic panel” that is fairly lightweight and capable of stopping most handgun rounds? When I say lightweight, I am thinking that a 10 inch x 14 inch book (3 inches thick) would be too heavy.

    • What material could someone use to improvise a “ballistic panel” that is fairly lightweight and capable of stopping most handgun rounds?

A human shield would work quite well and is self-propelled to boot.

If somebody shoots at you and your buddy, get behind your buddy.

    • 1/4 inch Kevlar panel material is readily available. Doubled up it fits your description. It’s light, and is used to ‘bullet proof’ car panels and briefcases. I have one such which is my designated “go to Southwest Detectives/Lockup at 2 a.m.” briefcase. I rarely carry it.

    • I’m with the late Martin Luther on this. He once complained bitterly to the local prince about the “murderous hordes of thieving peasants.” And who could blame him? The ninety-five theses were fine, but that quote convinced me he was the right man to lead the reformation. The bus driver’s probably on board now, too.

  7. The only intervention that will be taking place is Rickey going to prison. Haven’t you heard Rickey Wagoner made the whole thing up. Shot and stabbed himself. Shot his own bible. Yet all of you just totally accepted this racist lie ,because he said Blacks attacked me. I hope all of you feel stupid.

  8. To Vhyrus,
Who posted that the racist liar was a liar before me on this site? Still doesn’t change that he was able to sell this story dud to saying Blacks did it.
