Internationally-known firearms author and trainer Massad Ayoob has been named president of the Second Amendment Foundation, succeeding the late Joseph Tartaro.
“The election to president of SAF is one of the most cherished honors of my life,” Ayoob said. “I have been proud to serve for many years on SAF’s Board of Trustees and will do my best to continue my commitment to what I consider a civil right and indeed, a human right.
“I am humbled at the thought of replacing my long-time friend and mentor Joe Tartaro,” he continued, “and frankly doubt that anyone, myself included, can truly fill his shoes. I accepted the position only after being assured that it would be an interim appointment, and one of my primary goals is to find a dedicated 2A warrior with a longer life expectancy than my own to eventually serve in this position. In the meantime, I will support the goals of SAF, particularly to further strengthen our ties with the law enforcement community and to enhance the organization’s policy of embracing diversity in the community of the ‘gun culture.’”
Ayoob brings a lifetime of experience to the position. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. He was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
He has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through the Massad Ayoob Group.
He has appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

I know this man personally and consider him a friend. He is absolutely the right kind of man, a good choice for this position. Joe Tartaro was a force in the gun world for many years and sorely missed. Ayoob has the education and experience for this job.

This is incredibly good news, and a fantastic first step. We absolutely need a viable alternative to the NRA. I hope that SAF goes from strength to strength. The NRA has become corrupt and co-opted at the highest levels, and the only thing keeping it’s corpse alive is the millions of Americans who feel there is no other alternative. I said years ago that the NRA will never see another penny from me as long is it’s run by WLP and his cronies, who use your donations to do nothing except enrich themselves.
The best possible result is the NY AG winning their biased lawsuit, exposing the criminality of WLP, and allowing the good assets of the NRA to fall into the hands of the SAF.
I just donated to them again, and so should you.
I LOVE this man. It’s been my privilege to have shaken his hand on several occasions, and SAF couldn’t have made a finer choice.
I should point out that Steve Jobs returned to Apple and accepted the role of CEO as only an “interim” position, too.

I’ve got more books by Mas Ayoob than any other self-defense instructor. As a matter of fact I was just rereading, The Truth About Self-Protection, the other day. He covers the topics from A to Z. The techniques, the mentality you need, and the moral justification necessary to defend yourself and utilize firearms correctly. He also helps you navigate the legal system. The SAF could not have picked a better president. I congratulate them on making this excellent choice. And I congratulate Mas Ayoob on a lifetime of service to his fellow Americans. He continues to serve his fellow Americans by creating more content all the time. Recently, I watched some videos of him on the Wilson Combat YouTube channel. Many of those would make great articles here at TTAG. Such as the one about thumb placement when gripping a handgun.

I wonder who Massad Ayoob will be voting for in Nov? He’s a good man, I heard him speak numerous times. With a name like Massad Ayoob the media won’t know which way to run. Seeing Massad Ayoob at the helm of the SAF may be motivation for the NRA to hurry things along.

Congratulation Mas! And I believe that they have chosen one of the best speakers in the field of self defense to head this organization. He is a gentleman and a scholar and one of the best trainers I have ever met. He will do the right thing.
I met the man twice on the range at the academy. A friend ran firearms and would occasionally host events. I usually served as an R.O. Mr. Ayoob introduced himself and asked if my pistol was a Les Bear. I said, “No. It’s my Frankenstein pistol.” He looked puzzled. I said, “Colt frame, Les Bear slide, Novak sights, match grade barrel/bushing, ivory grips, etc.” The grips are what got him. He asked if my agency let me carry it on duty. I said, “Sure. Why not?” He was shaking his head as he turned away and said to himself, “I know I’m in the south now.” The guy has a sense of humor. The SAF could not have done better.

I cannot recommend highly enough taking at least one of his classes. As a MAG40 grad I was giddy just being there, even though the first couple of days in the class room was 95% what I had read from Mas’s books/articles, but the last 5% he will never publish and is not available in any video you can find on the webs, and it is not possible to overstate how profoundly mind blowing that 5% is. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I just hope the SAF presidency doesn’t prohibit him from teaching his classes going forward.
Mas Ayoob is a fantastic choice to run SAF. I’ve had the very real pleasure of taking three classes with him. The man is outstanding in his depth and breadth of firearms and his ability to convey this knowledge to his students.

Outstanding. I was fortunate enough to take one of his classes in San Louis Obisco, KA back in the mid 70’s. He was an outstanding instructor, and definitely new his stuff. He knows firearms like few others I have met.
