I like Sarah Silverman, but then I haven’t got laid for a very long time. TMI? Then highlight and delete that and skip to 2:14 for the gun-related voter ID commentary. One minute and twenty-five seconds later and you’re done. NB: that is NOT an open invitation to discuss my sex life. [h/t Jeremy]

  1. Ah, there it is. Robert was probably “taking care of business”.

Anyway, it actually makes sense that “firearms permits”, which I guess means CCW permits or FOIDs, would be considered valid ID, since they often carry more stringent requirements than other documents accepted as ID. I didn’t have to pass a background check or submit a full set of fingerprints to get my driver’s license, but that was the case for both the carry permits I have.

      • Either way, if ID is required, then there’s no reason why “gun permits” shouldn’t satisfy that requirement, as long as they have the necessary elements. Of the IDs issued by states, it’s a safe bet that they’ll have the most stringent requirements.

        • they do here in KS. thats what i showed to the election official to cast my vote in a local primary. we have requirements to vote such as citizenship (federal and state), age, and being regesitered to vote. why shouldn’t we have to prove that? and if you are to stupid to figure out how to get a form of ID, you shouldnt be voting. (please dont reply with its our right or anything like that, that last line is my opinion)

        • Indeed. Anyone can photocopy a voter registration card and photoshop it. IDs are free in most places, in SC I believe it’s $2.50.

      • Why not? It proves you’re a citizen, no?
In Indiana, a state-issued ID is free, so requiring an ID to vote isn’t unconstitutional.

However, making me pay for my carry permit is, and should be fixed.

  2. I may be missing something here but I’m personally dumbfounded that valid ID is not required to vote period. IMHO, that’s a wide open invitation to folks that aren’t eligible to vote and undermines our voting process. This is the most important thing we do as Americans and it’s beyond fishy to me that it’s not better protected….

    • ID cards cost money. therefore, requiring ID = poll tax. unless you’re generously offering to purchase ID cards for every eligible voter in the union, pound sand, elmer.

      • But a “poll tax” in the form of a licence fee for a Constitutional Right is acceptable?

Here’s a shovel and some sand Mr. din.

        • dear peckerwood,
paying for a CFP is not the equivalent of a poll tax, not by a long shot, so you can hang onto your fallacy, your shovel, and your sand, and go have yourself a time.

      • Hey Din. An ID cost money to exercise your right to vote? How about the hoops I have to jump through to exercise my 2a rights? That poll tax is a whole lot cheaper.

        • That’s an issue for 2A activists to litigate down the road. Poll taxes and voting rights have already been ruled on, and found unconstitutional. Hopefully someday Gura will get to put another notch in his belt over that issue.

As for voter ID, states are, in fact, providing free voter ID cards that have the required information so voters can comply with the new law without it being a poll tax.

        • I don’t understand why other lawyers besides Gura don’t take that on. I mean, he’s good and all, but there’s only one of him. And there are *so many* supreme court case opportunities for 2A.

      • Most states will give you a free non-drivers license state-issued ID if you are too poor to get a drivers license, or disinclined too vote. Since poor people seem to have no problems jumping through bureaucratic hoops and getting Welfare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), EITC and other government benefits, I can’t think that obtaining a simple ID would be beyond their abilities. Hell, most “poor” people in America have drivers licenses, cars, air conditioners and game consoles. In NY, many of them spend $12 a pack on smokes. The reason student ID isn’t accepted is because out of state students use it to vote in two places – the state of their school (on the student ID) and their home state (on their drivers license).

        • Not to mention that as a student I had no problem having the other student that was preparing my ID change my DOB to make me 21 the first time I crossed the pond to study here? The point is, beyond my youthful indiscretions, that a student ID is not a reliable source of ID.

      • Cool-aid anyone? That’s a weak attempt to marginalize rational thinking. “The poor people can’t afford ID cards”. Yes, I would pay for free voter ID cards,. Heck, I’m probably paying for your health insurance already…

      • Way to marginalize rational thinking. “The poor people can’t afford ID cards”. Yes, I would pay for free voter ID cards, heck I’m probably paying for your health insurance already…

      • Way to go, marginalizing rational thinking. “The poor people can’t afford ID cards”. Yes, I would pay for free voter ID cards, that would be taxed money well spent.

    • just like radical terrorists aren’t buying guns at gunshows from private sellers and then going on shooting sprees, felons and illegal immigrants aren’t trucking their ass to the polling station en mass to vote in other peoples’ places.

      • Are you sure?…. What’s stopping them. Illegal’s get paid to protest. Why not vote? That would explain Kalifonia’s (for instance)….

      • You’re going to find more opportunity at an administrative level to tamper with vote counts than you are by the general public. Not sayin’ it couldn’t happen, but the ability to mess with vote counts is greater the higher up in the chain you go and the more source detail you can strip.

  3. As a former resident of Chicago, I’m qualified to state that Sarah Silverman is a frackin’ idiot.

Were it not for people with guns , she’d likely be in an anti-Semitic camp right now. As far as voter ID goes, we need it badly. Liberals operate by the fighter pilots’ motto of “if you ain’t cheating, you’re not trying”. Their utopian dogma demands expansion by any means necessary. If that means criminals and dead people are needed to ensure a leftist leader is selected, so be it.

    • As a former resident of Chicago, I agree with your observation on Sarah Silverman being an idiot. After watching this I’m reminded why I don’t pay attention to her.

I also agree that voter ID is needed. I registered in Chicago with no party preference. Each time I went to my local polling place to vote in a general election I was asked to show ID. No one else in line while I was there was asked for it. Double standard?

      • Requiring Paid ID = Poll tax = Unconstitutional
If you watch the video, certain politicians are pushing for it only recently (it hasn’t always been in place in certain *swing* states) because they predict this will decrease voter turnout and increase the likelihood that one candidate will win that state. That’s pretty unfair, given that setting up a financial barrier takes away from a basic and universal right—the American vote that sustains our system (flawed that it may be, it is the best existing system of government on the planet).

        • All the hoops I have to jump through to own a gun unconstitutional. Not being issued a permit in California, uncontitutional. So what’s your point.

        • All the voter ID laws I have seen include a prevision with a free or an extermally cheap id. The reason Democrats hate these is because it will stop the dead from voting. They vote in every election. In some area’s there are the Democrats most important group.

          Thanks
          Robert

  4. Even if you don’t drive you can still get State Issued photo ID. My aunt doesn’t drive but she has a State ID so she can walk to the store and buy cigarettes and booze, or walk to the bank and cash a check.

  5. I dunno Robert… Nice Jewish girl…

Anywho, how are you liking that caracal? Still your EDC? Problems? Concerns? Still liking the quick sights?

    • Yes: when I was in 4th Grade, there was a little girl that would go around to every one of the other students and sniff their butts so she could tell the teacher which one farted.

Why is a Concealed Handgun License considered a “License to Kill”?

I had a college professor [while eating at the local pizza inn] tell me that firearms in the classroom would distract. I asked him if the three I had on me were distracting…. his response; “You have a gun?” Then he said, “what if someone wanted to beat you up and take that gun?” So I said, “why? How you they know I had a gun?” Then he said, “Well, what if they were beating you up and found the gun on you?” The I said…. “that’s why I carry a gun!!”

  6. What a vapid toon, and it’s too damn bad. She’s pretty cute, and obviously funny. To her credit, I don’t think she has any idea how wrong she is, nor do most of the vicious, hateful media types who prostitute their talents for the statists they seem to identify with.

There is a point to be gleamed from all this, though. Let’s use some of our wasteful government expenditure to issue everyone in the US (who is a citizen) a photo passport, free of charge. No poll tax, no poverty issues, no bullshit. Put a state of residence on there, and when you change states, turn it in for another. Everyone who qualifies for one, just come on down to the post office and let’s fix this shit. 300 Million passports isn’t a tall order for the most developed nation in the world, for fuck’s sake. Somehow I see the increased number of votes being less than a percentage point, anyway. Most people who can’t be bothered to get a license DGAF anyway, as long as they get their welfare on time.

    • No worries, if the allegations of everyone will be chipped or forfeit health-care is true (in Obama-Care), ya won’t need a picture ID, they’ll scan you just like a dog to ID you. Worse yet, that’ll probably lead to more big-brother has all the powers, as we’ll be the serfs without privacy, voice, or self-defense… on the premise mandatory chipping is part of Obama-care.

    • Because voter fraud is very rare. It is a solution in search of a problem. I have a bigger concern with election fraud, which is why I don’t like electronic voting machines. They are too easily hacked for high tech ballot stuffing.

      • Students get IDs to drink in bars. Poor people get IDs to get their government benefits. Veterans can get IDs from DMVs. Citizens can get passports.

Allow me to clarify – I live in CA, which does not require voter ID. Ridiculous. Do you know how many people in this state are pretending to be someone else? Has anyone every stolen your ID for credit or other reasons. Mine has, and I carry ID.

        • Students who are not over the age of 21 cannot get an ID to drink. Renewing a passport if you don’t travel is a waste of money (it costs a pretty penny). You yourself had your ID stolen, so what good does requiring an ID to vote do if that is the case?

      • Because in 10 years there have been 86 total cases of voter fraud. Voter ID is a solution in need of a problem.

Funny, I thought most TTAG readers were against government intrusion into our lives. Can you say “cognitive dissonance?”

        • How about tit for tat. You intrude into my gun rights and I intrude into your voting rights. The antis seem to think they can interfer all they want in others rights and not have it returned to them. Silly anti’s.

        • Who’s a liar? Me or one of the above? My statement stands. I frequently vote against causes that I would otherwise support just as payback against the leftist anti crowd.
Quick example. Voted against gay marriege in California. I don’t care about gay marriege, if adam and steve wanna get married, who cares. But these liberal left groups will get no support from me until the return the favor.

        • Nah. I was responding to the guy claiming to know as fact that there had been only 88 cases of voter fraud in the past 10 year.

          Sorry.

      • No, that’s bogus. Voter fraud isn’t that rare. It is detected with regularity. Of course some state’s lax voter laws seem to encourage lack of detection. How do you know cheating exists if you don’t test for it? Especially since the people doing it are trying to hide the fact that it’s being done. These voter ID laws are a sensible response to voter fraud. While election fraud is a concern, it’s not an either/or proposition. Both kinds of fraud should be addressed. All the arguments against voter ID laws are easily rebutted. If you can’t figure out how to get a photo ID with states giving them away, well, better luck next time. It’s about picking effective leaders, not seeing how many stupid people we can get to the polls.

    • I have seen more than a 100 buses coming up IH35 from Mexico with “Touristo Mexico” on them. When I stopped at a bus stop I saw them getting out… nothing but Street People? Interesting. Must be getting ready to vote.

I stopped at the local DNC and asked one of the men there about what they were doing… He could not speak English, so I left and went my way.

Your right! There is so little voter fraud on the Conservative Side that it is a shoe-in for the druggies, homeless, welfare sponges, and liberals….

  7. My favorite Silverman movie role: loudmouth c##t who gets cold-cocked in Way of the Gun.
(tried to post a link but I guess that’s not allowed – search YouTube for Silverman way of the gun)

  8. FYI
Sarah is terrible in bed, but get inside a national monument, or near a founding document and she turns into a depraved sex maniac.
Robert here’s a hint: Change your name to Bobby Fargo, slick down your hair and dress like a Hippster

  9. Over produced propaganda. Probably not her real ‘Nana’. Gosh I wonder who she’s voting for and her stance on 2A. Typical lefty BS.

  10. It’s easy to satisfy the requirement for voter ID, at least here in the Commonwealth of Virginia: http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/voter_information/voter_id_requirements_in_virginia.html. Your state may vary.

I recall in the 2008 election that a woman ahead of me in line at the poll, whom I recognized as a fellow soccer-parent, identified herself using her expired (since childhood) Russian passport because it was all she could get on short notice after a purse grabbing. The poll workers had her fill out an affidavit (I believe the rules are different now) and gave her instructions for identifying herself properly within a week. They then gave her a provisional paper ballot and she duly voted. I heard on the grapevine later that she had managed to meet the simple requirements so that her vote was counted.

I don’t doubt there is a long and ugly tradition of voter suppression in many jurisdictions: in one of his books Studs Terkel wrote about how politicos and their staffers rounded up folks in Chicago and paraded them through one precinct after another to vote several times, enticing them with sandwiches and beer along the way.

Those who have made a deliberate effort to live off the grid have effectively made the decision to voluntarily disenfranchise themselves. The ballot is secret, but the act of voting is and should be public. Those who have become homeless due to difficult and long-term circumstances have my sympathy.

I missed my first two presidential elections because the county clerk’s office responsible for absentee ballots failed to take into account international mailing times. The first time I was studying abroad and the second I was serving my country overseas. Frankly, I’m still pissed about it three decades later. Since then I’ve never traveled on election day.

  11. Actually she made a point that has some validity. If all voter aged people in the country had a ccw permit it would solve this problem. And since we’d need them to vote the government would have to issue them on demand and for free. See, even a liberal douchebag has a good idea once in a while.

  12. Ok I skipped to the portion then stopped it, couldn’t take much more.
Actually a firearm permit, CCW, FOID is perfectly acceptable government issued ID.
I have been to many countries around this world and everyone I have ever been in requires government ID to vote. I am sorry, but I seriously don’t think the argument that it keeps people from voting it valid. Sure some old folks, and I mean really old might have been born prior to records, but that honestly is a statistically small number. Most students I know all have drivers licenses. They all also have birth certificates and school records, no reason why they can’t get a sate issued ID. Lord knows if you are over 21 but not 30 you want one, otherwise you can’t go to bars!
Sure there will be folks who fall outside that realm of reality, but I don’t think it would be that many.
And yes all students should learn to shoot…

  13. I have the ultimate voter fraud prevention, and it doesn’t require anyone to have an ID to vote.

You go to your polling place to vote. They stamp your forehead with an ink that doesn’t wear off for 24 hours (then it comes off easily). All polling places have the same stamp. The first polling place you go sees that you have a clean forehead, stamps you, and you go in and vote (preferably for your favorite pro-gun candidate). If you try to go to another polling place to cast your vote again….. sorry, you’ve already been tattooed. Awesome!

  14. Ugh, she’s like the living embodiment of nails on a chalkboard just by her voice and general demeanor. Being a complete moron doesn’t help her case either. Before I even knew who she was, I skipped the episodes of Monk she guest starred on just because she’s so annoying.

  15. Hi, my name is Matt, and I have an admission to make.

I like Sarah Silverman. I always have. I think she’s pretty damn funny, most of the time. And I, also, wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers.

    • She’s like a hot Polish girl I chatted with this morning at school.

“I think guns are too easy to get in America,People die every week from gun violence”. Ooh, that slavic accent. Its a damn shame what I gotta do next.

“More people die every week from car accidents, yet you don’t see folks in a hurry to ban cars no?”-ST

“OMG, im done discussing this with you,I just dont agree”. Sigh. Another one bites the dust….

  16. Really? Seriously? Does anyone here truly believe that these voter ID initiatives – pushed in states with Republican governors and Republican legislatures – would have come up if the GOP had a better presidential candidate, with stronger polling against Obama?

    Please.

    • Actually, if ballots didn’t have a habit of turning up in the trunks of cars in Minnesota, I don’t think voter ID would be such a big deal. 😉

    • The ones doing the voter fraud don’t care about stopping it. How many more states would have Republican governors if they had sensible voter ID laws? I know that there are states that are just plain leftist states. But some would be right wing states if they had clean elections. And quite frankly, I think we have a pretty good GOP candidate, especially when you look at the opposition. At least Romney loves his country and doesn’t want to cripple it. Same could be said about Obama, but if he was the leader of his country, maybe he could do it some good. Instead, we’re stuck with him until November and God willing, no more.

  17. I’ve been voting since 1974, and I have ALWAYS been amazed that ID was not required to vote, especially after I spent time in Chicago, where I personally saw voter fraud in the Nov 1974 election. Living here in PA, my Filipina wife got her driver’s license and the twit at the DMV registered her to vote as a Democrat, and she didn’t yet have her citizenship. we had to go to the county courthouse and undo that little mistake. Seems that was the year that PA was urging EVERYONE to register to vote when renuing any documents at the DMV.I moved from the People’s Demokratik Republik of NJ back in 1988. I was registered to vote there, but registered to vote at my new residence in PA. About 8 or 9 years after I had moved, my mom was voting and the clerk asked why I hadn’t been voting. The law was that if you didn’t vote in 4 years, you were supposed to drop off the rolls, and my mom told the clerk that I had moved several years earlier. The clerk replied, “Oh, that’s ok, tell him he can still vote here even though he lives in PA We keep everyone on just in case.” So I cringe every time I hear that voter fraud is “rare”, no need for ID. Probably the same people that challenged every freaking vote in the 2004 Florida presidential election.

  18. I’m reminded of LBJ when he first ran for the Texas House of Rep. He won by just 62 votes. Funny thing though. After the election someone noticed the last 128 people who voted all voted in alphabetical order. Isn’t that amazing?

  19. Maybe we should just go back to only being able to vote if you actually own land….. That will weed out a lot of rif raf. I know, I know… that would include the honest hard working people who got caught trying to own more than they could afford …hmmmm Could be a good thing. Take all that with some salt if you know what I mean… Good day sir.

    • Couldn’t agree more. I have been preaching this to anyone who will listen for the last couple of years. Only people with some skin in the game should get to decide who runs the place.

  20. Robert…any “happening” bar. Stay until closing. You’ll leave with…something.

If your on a good day, maybe sooner.

PS: Avoid anti-police talk,….chicks aint into that at first convo. 🙂

  21. Voter ID cards are free in SC. So much conspiracy theory laden tripe. I think they are so defensive about this because they are committing vote fraud. Requiring someone to present ID to buy a gun, totally reasonable (to them) however asking them to present ID to vote, absurd. You either protect ALL fundamental freedoms or you just look like a wack job with an agenda. Oh, wait, it was Sarah Silverman.

  22. Riddle me this: what is the point of voter registration, which seems no one have an issue with, if you don’t back it up with showing ID at voting time?

Could it be that to perpetrate voter fraud at the level that would benefit a party (large scale fraud), registration is good because it allows for voters to be added to the polls through a paper exercise: get a corrupt state registrar on board with your program to add names to the list, then return the list of fictitious voters to the party that needs it. Now, that party only needs to recruit/pay people to impersonate the registered voters on the list.

But having to actually show a valid, state issued, photo ID gets in the way of that otherwise straightforward plan.

So, when it comes to this issue, I’m inclined to think that the side wanting to take care of the issue is the one that doesn’t benefit, while the side arguing to keep the status quo is the one that has the most to lose.
