Samuel L. Jackson has strong opinions on the Trayvon Martin shooting. Quite how they reconcile with each other is another matter. According to web.orange.uk, Jackson’s called Florida’s stand your ground law “‘bulls**t’ . . . Who are these people running around the community with guns, pretending to be cops, who have a right to shoot somebody because of this bulls**t law?” That said, Mr. Jackson “still believes in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gives all citizens the right to bear arms.” So does the Tennessee native still keep a heater or two at home? “Hell yeah. I’m not going to be the one without the gun when the people who have guns show up.” That’s it! Stand your ground Sammy! [h/t Bruce Krafft]

    • Since people people in general do not get involved with their government or community or what is going on in general, why would you be surprised that people would not know anything more than what the media says?

Since people do not general follow up to find the facts, why would you believe they know more than what the media tells them?

Since the media obfuscates the truth to their own editors political bent, why are you surprised they don’t know what the law is really about.

Ignorance is bliss, they will know all from a single tweet or what the talking heads tell them or their friend on Facebook says. There is not need to take personal responsibility, someone will do it for them.

It is no surprise, be healthcare or pretty much anything else, there is lot of information but everyone is too lazy to find out the facts.

  1. Say ‘what’ again. Say ‘what’ again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfluffer, say what one more Gottdang time!

    edit:
Dang it … bob beat me to it.

  2. Samuel L. Jackson: the only person badass enough to say sh*t that would get politicians thrown under the bus.

Seriously though, if Romney or Feinstein had said this, I think the reactions would be a lot less friendly. Or maybe I’m just that cynical.

    • “vigilantes and the self-appointed armed judges”
      —–
So, defending oneself in any place one may legally be is now vigilantism? When will the next edition of the NewSpeak Dictionary be released?

    • If you attack a criminal without provocation, that is vigilantism.

If a criminal attacks you and you choose through action to have him stop attacking you, it is self defense.

If you are incapable of perceiving a difference, you should seek help for severe paranoia issues.

      • Mikey is unable to comprehend why a peasant would dare to resist their master and do harm to their “betters”. As such, the notion of a normal person using force to defend themselves is beyond comprehension to him.

    • “but that he’s critical of the vigilantes and the self-appointed armed judges like many of you guys.”

Gee Mike, Do you really think “many of us guys” are vigilantes? Or are you just making stuff up ’cause you think saying it supports you cause.

  3. Sam is guilty of a couple misconceptions that are going around about “Stand Your Ground” laws. In particular, folks think that SYG gives folks immunity from prosecution even if they instigate a confrontation. If you are the agressor, there’s no law that is going to protect you. There are institutions that might–police departments covering for crimes of their own come to mind–but the law is not on your side.

Sam is ignorant on the matter of SYG. I can’t say I blame him. There’s been a lot of misinformation circulating. Even some prosecutors don’t understand the limits of SYG’s applicability.

Sam was also guilty–at one time, and perhaps still–of saying that the Martin killing was racially motivated. Again, due to misinformation from major news outlets that many trust (like NBC).

I like Sam Jackson. I think he’s great. He’s the type of guy that the Bill of Rights was passed to protect. There’s all sorts of crazy stuff he says, and he’s free to speak his mind without worring about political/legal reprocussions. I dig it.

I don’t really know if I’d call him a Second Amendment supporter–I mean, Obama also says he “believes in the Second Amendment”–but I’m thrilled that he says he is without fear that the Hollywood establishment will shun him for saying so.

    • Regarding Jackson:

“And he’s always been comfortable working all the time. That’s due to that work ethic he learned as a kid growing up in Chattanooga, Tenn. ‘I grew up in a household full of people who went to work all the time,” he recalls. “Everybody in the house went to work. Other than two weeks of vacation a year, that was it. Every day somebody was hitting it. I know how to get up and go to work.'”

  4. The man has made lots of money choosing to accept typical stupid and shallow Hollywood acting roles often that glamorized guns. I’ve recently heard much about SJ and his opinions on guns and private citizens. Previously, I have never ever heard a peep coming out of SJ criticizing violent acts coming from street gangsters.

To be fair, not hearing SJ criticisms of gangster violence via the media does not mean he hasn’t stated it. From the link: “I dont mind people having guns, I grew up with guns in Tennessee.”

    • I think Sam Jackson’s stand against street gangs is in line with most Americans – we wish they weren’t a part of our life here. Though is it really the responsibility of EVERY Black actor to speak out against street gangs?

It’s like asking every gun owner to apologize for irresponsible gun owners, or asking every Christian to apologize with some fundamentalist nutcase bombs an abortion clinic.

I think one of Sam Jackson’s strongest anti-gang messages is the film “ONE EIGHT SEVEN”. It’s not an Oscar-winning movie, but the message in the movie about gangs and street violence is pretty clear.

  5. Well ok he was asked about the Mr. Martin thing and went to SYG?
I have to admit SYG and castle laws vary if your states has them. It would be nice to have them clearly defined, and the same in every state. Vague laws which are left to interpretation are dangerous.
I believe in these laws, as we have a right to defend ourselves. I do think folks need to take a look at some sort of standardization and education. Education to gun owners, and law enforcement as well as the judicial system. This will minimize the guess work when it comes to defending ourselves, property and loved ones.
I love Sam Jackson, yeah he is a badass, and that fro is way cool!
He may not be perfect, but then again none of us are.

I hate to say this but if you are a fan of exploitation films then being in a Quentin Tarantino film is not a bit part!

I will leave you with this:
There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. “The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you.” Now… I been sayin’ that s**t for years. And if you ever heard it, that meant your ass. You’d be dead right now. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherf**ker before I popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some s**t this mornin’ made me think twice. See, now I’m thinking: maybe it means you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here… he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. And I’d like that. But that s**t ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd.

  6. Samuel L. Jackson is an actor, and actors as a group are not widely known for their intellectual prowess. But give the devil his due – Jackson is the only man in the world who could look badass while wearing Jehri curls. In fact, he might be the onliest man in the world who could actually look like a man in Jehri curls.

  7. It is my understanding that Mr. Jackson has previous felony conviction(s). Is his “ownership” of firearms legal in light of this, and if so, how?

    • Either the conviction has been expunged and/or his rights restored (unlikely, but possible), or Mr Jackson might be in a bit of trouble if someone with a badge caught wind of it.
