“The Uber driver authorities say fatally shot six people during a series of seemingly random attacks over the weekend was charged with murder Monday as questions swirled around the bloody rampage,” washingtonpost.com reports. “Investigators continue to look for a motive in the shooting, but so far detectives have not found any explanation.” Oh but everyone sure wishes they could! Because this type of crime . . .
strikes fear into the hearts of Americans everywhere. A completely random attack by the proverbial “nice neighbor” next door.
If the shootings could be explained by mental illness — say Mr. Dalton had a history of psychiatric trouble — people could think, well, someone could have done something before he went ballistic. Regrettable, but ultimately forgettable. Then again . . .
The Aurora theater killer was clearly, dangerously crazy. No one in authority who knew about his “issues” did a damn thing to stop him. Same for the Virgina Tech killer. And the Sandy Hook murderer. And Gabby Giffords’ shooter. For some reason, the public didn’t blame any of the people who failed in their obligation to protect innocent life in these mass shootings.
In this case as in so many others, people will either blame the killer — for good reason — or guns –because they want to “do something” to prevent another attack. “Keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people” seems to make sense. In reality, there’s little anyone can do to prevent a violent attack. Except, of course, defend themselves. And all too often, not even that.
One city official called the rampage “unexplainable.” A county official described it as “bizarre,” a sentiment echoed by Jessica Borden, who stood behind the counter of a rural convenience store not far from the accused gunman’s home and where he had been a regular.
Then Borden sighed and added: “But maybe it’s not so much of a surprise the way the world is nowadays.”
How is the world nowadays? Is it more violent than it used to be? Hardly. But that’s the story that the enemies of firearms freedom like to tell. Because they can argue that “easy access to guns” is the reason for this [non-existent] upswing in murder. I mean, Mr. Dalton had 11 rifles! Eleven! Who needs 11 rifles?
On a recent trip to my home state of Rhode Island, I heard people on talk radio wishing for the good old days, when the mob controlled the state. “You could walk down the streets at night without worrying about being attacked,” a caller claimed. True. Provided you were white and we’re talking about mob-controlled neighborhoods.
Neighborhoods where businesses struggled under the weight of extortion, living in fear of what would happen if they didn’t pay. Neighborhoods where mobsters beat up random strangers and raped young boys and girls with complete impunity. Neighborhoods where mobsters siphoned millions from union funds, a racket protected by bought-and-paid-for politicians.
A racket that forced the cost of labor so high entire industries fled to more business-friendly climes. To the point where jobs disappeared, unemployment skyrocketed and the state’s economy rolled over and died. Leaving old people longing for the days when their state was productive, rather than looking at the economic devastation wrought by mob-fueled corruption.
My point: while surely terrible, there are worse things than mass shooters, and many of these worse things are made worse by a disarmed populace. No one could stand up to the mob because no one other than “connected” people could legally carry a gun. No one could stand up to the mob because the only people who carried guns were criminals or cops (although there was little distinction between the two).
So when President Obama and his statist toadies prescribe more gun control in their effort to stop mass shootings, they’re using one evil — and that’s what it is, regardless of the killer’s motivation — to enable an even greater one. A disarmed society where the innocent are easy prey for men without morals. That’s how the world is nowadays. That’s how it’s always been.
That is beautifully written. “Brevity is the soul of wit…..” Let’s all recognize man’s tendencies to violence, greed, corruption etc., and read a hell of a lot more history. Things have never been better for a greater number of people than right now. Not perfect; just better by any number of benchmarks. IMHO.
In some part, this is due to the utter failure of our education system. Most people, let alone kids, have no idea how horrible and death-filled the “good old days” really were.
We are living the halcyon days right now. How much longer they can last is the only question. The Euros have given themselves over to Muslim invasion, they have 30-ish years left maybe less (unless a terrible ethnic cleansing takes place, and I don’t think they have it in them anymore). We have given the world we used to be directing to the ChiComs. The greed of our corporations has given them our manufacturing, and sealed our fate. The Chinese have out played us at every turn – they require “partnerships” for every single foreign business in China and they steal your IP. The rest of your IP is stolen through the army of hackers their government employs to attack business everywhere else. You just can’t compete against a country where the average worker earns under $5K per year (not to mention 19th century working conditions).
We might have 50 years left as a recognizable country, and that’s really a stretch. Our spending has been of the rails for 40 years, the unfunded long-term obligations are un-meetable, and they aren’t far off anymore. Provided of course that the don’t blow the planet up first, the oceans are quickly being emptied, and the planet can’t support another billion people living a first world life. Thankfully, invasion is unlikely, and maybe we start over again.
Reminds me of an otherwise forgettable made-for-TV science fiction time travel story. I forget the reason for the trip, but a small group of people, including an historical specialist, went back to the European middle ages. Upon arrival the historian said to the others that they needed to be very careful not to lose the devices that would take them home and not to get killed because this was a very dangerous place to be. Quote: “The only thing worse than getting killed here is to be forced to live here.”

I thought that it was odd that he seemed to be driving around looking for potential victims and selected the table with all older ladies, maybe because he thought they had lived pretty long lives and if he HAD to kill people, he found a group were older. He could have had instructions to kill at least one young person, or had specific instructions.
None of that may be true and the guy could just be nuts, but I thought he seemed oddly resigned to his fate when he was arraigned. Either way, it is a horrible situation, but he could just as easily have decided to drive his car into a crowd of people, like the woman in Las Vegas did…. but she used a car and cars kill people, so let’s get rid of cars!

The people who founded this country understand that not everything could be solved with a law and relied on religion to help be a moral compass to help provent all those issues you listed. You cannot legislate all behavior or poor morality.

I think that the decline of religion in homes has removed the base that often forms some people morals. Some people are inherently moral, some people are moral because of the laws of man, and some people are moral because of the teachings of the various religions.
People that grow up a home without moral guidance from the parents, or discipline, or no learned morality from a religion, are dangerous people. They “justify” their behaviors, and all it takes is the temporary removal of consequences (think rioters), for them to run amok.
I’m not a religious person, but one can see where religion is useful in defining a base behavior set for the sheeple masses; think of it as base programming. To be clear I’m not AT ALL implying religious people are sheeple for believing, I’m trying to make a point that, people that one would identify as a sheeple, need something to keep them in line.

Your reply is spot-on, in my opinion. The statement you made here is correct in my viewpoint. The other factor is the loss of the complete family values. One parent families and kids without a strong family structure often end up on the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak. The two parent system seems to provide much more guidance, the ability to separate right from wrong in daily life, and to make the correct choices. Discipline with love and attention to the child’s needs are so crucial. Religion is a part of this by providing a framework.

Not really trying to defend the Church. Any organization who has, and/or seeks, political power, is expendable and net negative. But while the Church still has/does some of that, it does so to such a tiny degree compared to organized other things, governments in particular, that it is by now pretty darned benign. And besides, the soul, hence future, of the Catholic Church seems to have left Rome for less secularized and compromised environs anyway. I’m sure it will return one day, but for now, Rome is really more pomp than practice.
Great in theory, but doesn’t jibe very well with the fact that violent crime is at a 40-year low, while the number of people who label themselves “Christian” has been declining pretty steadily over that time period. If you’re correct, shouldn’t we be seeing a correseponding increase in crime as church attendance drops off?
I believe we are seeing a significant increase in “soft” crime, especially theft and corruption which are basically two different ways of saying the same thing. In some cases that theft is outright (stealing something from your neighbor). In many other cases theft is less obvious. One example is not actually working for your job while on the company clock. Next we have the myriad unjust “fees”, penalties, and “taxes” that we all face. And how many politicians and company executives are squeaky clean rather than being on the take?
You believe there is an increase in those sorts of crimes, or you have actual evidence that such an increase exists and correlates with the decline in religious faith? Because one of those two things would have value in supporting your point, and the other is just making stuff up.

I, like many people, have a fire extinguisher in the house as well as smoke detectors and a CO detector. None of those items even gets touched unless the extinguisher has to be replaced or I replace the batteries in the alarms. But, if sh!t happens, you are happy to know they are available. I see firearms in the same way.
I am getting old and have had guns since I was 14yrs old and never had to use one in a defensive manner. Anything destroyed has been paper or something that would be food on the table. BUT, should sh!t happen I like many around here, will be happy to know their firearm is nearby.

The first question to ask in a case like this is whether or not the alleged perp was an SSRI drug user. Drugs like “Zoloft” et al produce violent behavior in a small percentage of users. The statistics are overwhelming. Yet the media *never* asks the question: was the perp an SSRI drug user?

Which causes to much stress on the already employed and causes disfunctions in thier homes with thier ‘thug’ children who have no parental guidance because mommy and daddy have to work 12 hours a day because so ceo doesnt want to pay for more workers to aleiviate the stress on the few workers they hire?…. ffs
We need to fix people, not restrict people from thier natural rights to live and defend themselves.

I would like to +1 your comment about the working conditions. I think that allot of the problems we face today, are complicated and require multiple solutions.
If we want to truly reduce violence, we have to start with the people. A nation of people who value life, liberty, and peace would not have our homicide rates even if there was a gun on every hip. A nation that does not, will always have such atrocities, regardless of the number or accessibility of guns.
If we truly want to reduce the violence, I believe we need to re-think our policies regarding issues ranging from the economic, to the justice system and our mass incarceration rates, to our educational system.
If we want to rule for 100 years, we should invest in a strong military. If we want to rule for 1000 years, we should invest in smart children.
The guns themselves, are largely irrelevant in this equation.
BOTTOM LINE: CARS KILL PEOPLE! LET’S GET RID OF CARS!
People should have to pass background checks to operate vehicles.
People should have to undergo psychological checks to operate vehicles.
People should NOT be able to buy cars at car shows, but only through regulated sellers who MAKE sure they pass their checks first.
People should not be allowed to sell their personal cars to others, since they have no way of knowing if the buyer will use the car to kill someone.

The linked article describes the unfortunate shooting of a woman by her sister. http://www.wect.com/story/31283719/woman-pleads-guilty-to-sisters-shooting-death-in-carolina-beach The husband of the shooter says she had just changed her meds and the woman cannot account for her bizarre behavior (probably psych meds, but who knows. Article does not say.) It does make you wonder whether this guy and some of the other crazed shooters had just started or just changed a medication. Listening to the list of side effects on all the pill commercials on TV is enough to make anyone cringe.
This. Yes the Chantix ads (smoking cessation drug) warn of thoughts of suicide, as well as depression and a whole host of side effects.
