Wasn’t Zimmerman assaulted? Sharpton said he wasn’t–that alone practically confirms that he was, based on Sharpton’s history. And Zimmerman does have a reputation of standing up for his community.

As a black man that grew up in the public housing projects, I cannot stress how important self reliance is. So even though I am not a fan of Rev. Sharpton, he is correct about this. Bill Cosby has been saying this for years. Mentoring is very important, and I was fortunate to have strong parents, teachers and coaches to help us move up and out of public housing. Now I split my time between my job in a northeastern suburb and my home in the southwest so I traverse the country several times each year.( Reciprocity Please! ) Increasingly I see communities rise up and take back their streets and towns. This is self reliance at its core and the kind of grass roots movement we need to see in the inner cities. Proper understanding of gun safety and the responsibility of gun ownership should be included in this mentoring. The fact that so many of our leaders preach to get guns taken away from the communities that arguably need guns most is ludicrous. The thugs that seem to prey on the poor in their own neighborhoods need to know that the law abiding citizens don’t just want protection from the police. The thugs need to know folks are legally armed, well trained, organized and motivated to protect our homes and families.
Poor doesn’t mean helpless.

Really? Can you provide an example?
Firstly, please don’t ever say blacks don’t like Jews. It just isn’t true. Yes their was strife in Crown Heights years ago. I was there. But things are much better now and even then there were plenty of friendships between Jews and blacks. Remember the Civil Rights movement. Secondly, speaking of Brooklyn. It contains two neighborhoods that have come back from the crack wars of the 80’s. Fort Greene and much of Bedford – Stuyvesant . That is not to say they are crime free but the civic pride is evident and block by block communities are organizing, mentoring, restoring homes and trying to do right by their children. Perhaps I am just an optimist and try to see the bright or good side in tough situations. I only hope community leaders realize that the 2A can help their cause. Because otherwise only the thugs have guns.

The strife in Crown Heights was not the fault of one ethnic group. One of my former housemates was Jewish. Had relatives in Crown Heights. From what he said there was no love lost between either group.
Context is everything, and the quote is misleading. She and the other tools in her network don’t want action, it’s all just rhetoric. The “we need everyone to take action” is just another way of saying “give money to Sharpton.”
