“Let me ask you this Miss, if somebody pointed a gun at you and you had a gun in your pocket, what would you do? I think that answers the question.” – Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Bloomberg Loses His Cool After Reporter Questions Officers’ Actions In Shooting Near Empire State Building, newyork.cbslocal.com

  1. Well, I’d say “Dive for cover.” Or maybe “Freeze in shock and get shot.”

Shooting *nine* other people would be pretty low on my list.

But then again I’m not a politician of his kind…

  2. Wow, the hypocrisy!!! So it’s a given that a law enforcement officer should both have the means to defend themselves and shoot back when a criminal points a gun at them. But a citizen gets neither since New York has criminalized concealed carry for non-elite citizens.

Bloomberg’s position is that law enforcement officers have a right to defend themselves from attacks but the citizens do not. I wish people would wise up and vote this guy out of office.

  3. The mayor’s statement: “Let me ask you this Miss, if somebody pointed a gun at you and you had a gun in your pocket, what would you do?” sounds to me like he’s arrived on our side. Now all we have to do is to get “guns in the pockets” of responsible citizens.

    • He’s not on our side, that was taken out of context. There are occasions to defend the NYPD, but this is not one of them. If Bloomie can’t see the value of revising NYPD training and trigger pulls, then he’s an imbecile. It seems to me that most of the gun grabbers aren’t particularly logical, but Bloomie can and will take heat for this, and the city will take it in the shorts when the lawsuits hit.

      • Bloomberg has fallen for his own gun control propaganda. I think he really believes that if you train up the NYPD to reasonable standards they will go all “trigger happy” because the more you use a gun the more willing you are to pull the trigger. He is to blind to see that the trigger indiscipline shown by these two officers is a direct result of a lack of training. A well trained shooter has the confidence to reduce his volume fire because can accurately put rounds on the target. He doesn’t feel a need to spray and pray that he hits something.

        • Not forgetting that the cops should have tailed the shooter rather than confront him in a crowded street.

    • We could only wish, but I am pretty sure it is out of context.

It would have been great if the reporter had “fired” back and said something like: “That’s a ludicrous question Mr. Bloomberg, neither I or my fellow citizens of NYC have the option to carry a gun to defend ourselves”

      • She was probably too stunned by his take on the situation. He put her in a hypothetical situation that shouldn’t ever exist, according to the propaganda he spouts and she probably buys in to. Then he goes further and says her actions would be justified. Horror! That sounds almost like affirmation of SYG.

  4. “Let me ask you this Miss, if somebody pointed a gun at you and you had a gun in your pocket, what would you do? I think that answers the question.”

In New York? Get arrested for carrying a weapon. Or shoot the bad guy and then get arrested for carrying a weapon. Like Martin said, shooting nine other people probably would not be one of my options.

  5. Bloomberg is due all the ridicule and denigration he gets on this issue. This statement is just another reason why he’s so contemptible.

  6. I’d say,

“I’d stand there and let myself get shot since even if I did manage to shoot the criminal first, you and your tyrannical policies would see to it that my life was ruined anyway for possessing a gun.”

  7. Ha! Let’s report his words in the right context. MB has hardly changed his stance. Rather he has made himself look even more elitist, unconcerned with the common man, and full of double standards. MB’s comments at the news conference became the news overshadowing the case in question. His reaction is a boon for us.

  8. I find it very telling that Bloomberg went for the same threatening response that former Chicago mayor Daley did to what was an honest line of inquiry.

Here’s Daley’s remarks from a couple years ago:
“It’s been very effective,” Daley said, picking up a gun from the dozens displayed on a nearby table. “If I put this up your butt, you’ll find out how effective it is. Let me put a round up your, you know.”

Maybe these guys think none of us can be trusted with guns because THEY respond violently to challenges against their perceived manhood.

  9. It dependes upon the distance and your confidence. Compliance may be the best answer FOR THE MOMENT. Another answer may be to dodge while attacking empty handed. Dodging and drawing while running to the criminal’s 11 or 1 o’clock position is another option.

  10. Most practical answer. I was thinking some form of distraction might even be in order.

But we can’t begrudge anyone taking the opportunity to bust on Bloomy.

  11. We see here that the mayor of New York both recognizes the value of armed self-defense and wants to keep that limited to worthy people.

Would someone please explain how this jerk got elected three times?

  12. “[I]f somebody pointed a gun at you and you had a gun in your pocket, what would you do?”

Well, the first thing I would do is pull the gun out of my pocket and shoot nine bystanders at random, thereby disorienting the bad guy and causing him to burst out in uncontrollable laughter. And while he was laughing, I’d reload and shoot him five times center mass.

How dare anyone question hizzoner? No wonder Mayor Napoleon told her to STFU in his own, very special way. What a charmer he is. And what is it about big city mayors that makes think that they’re actually kings who rule by divine right?

    • “And what is it about big city mayors that makes think that they’re actually kings who rule by divine right?”

Well, quite frankly, the Mayor may be a very bad person in so many ways, but the people of NYC have elected him three times. Who is more stupid – a bad politician or the people who keep electing him? There are parts of the country where a “(D)” after your name is all you need to win.

  13. This was Bloomy’s “Let them eat cake” moment that unfortunately has not brought about a revolution in NYC or State. Her response should have been, “So you’ll issue me and other eligible citizens a carry permit, or look the other way if we carry without a permit?”
