“The heightened concern [about the theft of a Toldeo police officer’s duty gun] is the bigger, larger capacity for the magazines. Police have a 15 round magazine, and the legal limit for a civilian is nine. So, there’s six more bullets.” Fremont [OH] Police Chief Tim Wiersma [via wtol.com]

  1. Dear lord, six more rounds until he has to take 1.5 seconds to slap in a fresh mag! Surely, this is a dark day for the impenetrable ward of gun violence that is the 9-round limit.

        • Ohio has a stupid law written by gun grabbers that states that if a magazine holds more than 31 rounds for a semi-automatic weapon, then it is considered a fully automatic weapon. You can buy, sell, own, and use any size magazine you want. If you commit a crime and have more than 31 rounds loaded in a magazine you’ll just get a little extra time added to your sentence.

    • Serial numbers are no joke. When the perp’s disappeared into the night, tossing the illegal but numbered revolver by my backdoor, the cops at least get to attempt a few easy collars based on “hey, this was once your gun.” Good for promotion. All the F&F guns had numbers. They’re really useful… could make it easier to catch an ….AG.

  2. There is a bad guy out there with 15 rounds. I want 15 rounds too so I am not outgunned when he tries to rob ME.
    My 1911 only holds 9 🙁

  3. After reading the news story from the above link, I see he had TWO handguns stolen, his Glock duty weapon with 3 full mags and a personal 9mm with 2 full mags. Seems like the perp knew where to look, as the rest of the house was undisturbed. Hopefully they will catch the bad guy before he hurts anyone. As to the mag capacity, I was unaware that Ohio had any limits on magazine capacity.

      • Quite so, and thanks for the correction. Such is the arbitrary asshattery that people allow to occur in their states.

        • Actually that’s incorrect. You can use any size magazine you want, but if you get caught actually LOADING more than 31 rounds into one, then somehow it magically becomes a fully automatic weapon.

    • Times are tough in Toledo. Maybe the officer needed some cash. Hope he uses some of it to buy a little gun safe and bolts it down. It’s obscene that an LEO leaves two guns and ammo in the same location and unsecured when he leaves the house. I’m shocked, just shocked.

  4. Regarding the “limit for a civilian is nine”: Hey, Chief! Guess what? You’re a civilian too.

I really wish these guys would come up with another way to describe us non-cops they ostensibly “serve”. To continuously set up the “Cop” vs. “civilian” meme only further widens the gulf between the police and those that pay their salary.

    • This is becoming an issue. I’m reminded of the SEAL thrown in the bin in NYC other day. Sent that article to a guy who was absolutely one of the best at that sort of stuff 40 years ago (I used to help pull him out, occasionally.) His view? This psuedo-military BS in the suburbs is really starting to piss off guys who earned their PTSD the hard way. No good can come of it.

      • Oh, it already does. Being former military has NEVER helped me in any relations to cops. In fact, they seem insulted by it most of the time.

I about lost it on an officer who strolled up to my vehicle with his hand on his duty holster and the retention disengaged. I asked him why he was doing so and he told me “For both of our safety.”

        • DR DAVE: My life has been fortunate since RVN, but imagine THIS: You’re one of the very best at at (some TF). You are in the first selection of Delta. You’re in Operation Eagle Claw and more. You retire. Then your wife files for div, but calls the cops first, charging you smacked her. Gun rights gone for life. You have to transfer your firearms. And then eight years later an LEO pulls up like that, twice in two days. Swagger practiced in front of a mirror. No citation either time. Just apparently wanted to look around the car. If it were me, I couldn’t take it. Luckily it’s not.

    • My google-fu is strong, today. There is no such restriction. Chief “Mo-Betta-Den-You” is talking out his ass.

      • Your google-fu is a little off. Ohio does have a capacity limit for all firearms magazines. That limit is 31 rounds. No 50 round drum for you Mr. Cleveland!!!

        • Wrong. Ohio has no magazine limitation. The gun grabbers law only applies to the actual number of bullets placed in a magazine. You can own a 2 trillion round magazine and it’s totally legal – you just can’t legally put more than 31 bullets in it at a time.

Basically, it’s just a little something extra to add on another 6 months or so if you get caught committing a crime (or have one real dick of a Range Master).

    • Not sure why “Kansas” got inserted into what should have been “Ohio”. The lack of a mag capacity limit is still true, though.

  5. And you can make out just behind the enhanced weapons description…2 full clips. Once more reinforcing improper nomenclature. As an aside, I had an employee who was in the national guard and would refer to everyone not in the service or who had never served as a civilian. Always hated that, especially from a weekend warrior.

  6. So the fact it’s 15 rounds lost by this idiot makes it a REALLY big problem, not just a problem.
Maybe the cops are the ones who need the electronic smart guns we hear about. Along with strings on the bottom tied to their belts.

  7. Hold on there Mr Police Chief. Last time I checked the Ohio magazine capacity limit was anything more than 30 rounds, not 9. So there are 15 FEWER rounds that this guy could potentially have.

  8. So if a house were on fire and flames were bursting out of the roof and all of the windows would Chief Tim Wiersma express concern about how flammable the bottle of Vodka it that is in the cabinet over the refrigerator?

  9. Betcha this gun is gonna be given to a gun buyback program for a $50 gift card, then the pistols are going to be destroyed without even bothering to look at the serial number.

  10. What? No gun safe? I know if he had a safe he surely would have used it. C’mon Chief, issue these guys a safe and bone up on the regs while you’re at it.
