“There is a fear that if (the ATF) get(s) too big, it will infringe on gun rights, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Having strong firearms policies and laws is the best way to preserve gun rights.” – Dewey Webb, retiring ATF Houston Division Chief

  1. It depends on his definition of gun rights. If by “gun rights” he means the power and authority of the almighty state to interfere, dominate and destroy by using guns against its own citizens, then he’s right.

  2. “Hi, we’re from the Government and we’re here to help you!” BOHICA*

*Borrowed from Grouch Old Cripple in Atlanta: Bend Over Here It Comes Again.

  3. How long does it take for most folks get their NFA paperwork approved? Not to mention the whole restrictions on supressors and SBR/SBS.

  4. I call bullshit. That’s like saying the best way to maintain a free flowing basketball game is to put seventy refs on the court and regulate shoestrings. You semi-imbecilic wanna-be-big-brother Muppets reject.

  5. Dewey Webb’s retirement announcement was cause for celebration here in Houston. His views on “gun control” run counter to the views of over 80% of the area residents. His statements regarding what “most Americans” want in terms of “gun control” in the recent Houston Chronicle article are utter nonsense. A fact that should be easily understood if he actually asked someone here in Houston the question.

Folks here in southeast Texas own firearms for self defense, hunting and sport shooting. Rather than hounding folks at area gun shows and accusing local FFL’s of selling to “straw buyers”, Webb’s team would be better off working with HPD and the Sheriff’s office to reduce the amount of gang related shootings and armed home invasions in the area.

Let’s hope that the Webb’s replacement shows a little more “Texas common sense” in his approach to “gun control” here in Houston.

    • Yes, indeed. “Gun control” carries the assumption for bureaucrats that if they exercise enough dominion of inanimate objects, everything will be good. But somehow people who are willing to rape, rob, and kill never seem to think much of a little biddy gun law. Or knife law. Or law generally. Also, going after criminals who might fight back is riskier business than making life difficult for decent people.

  6. Is this the same division of the BATF that arrested a Vietnam Vet at a Gun Show because a Mexican lied about being an American Citizen and had a forged Texas Driver License? The Illegal Mexican testified against the Vietnam Vet at court so they imprisoned the Vet and let the Illegal Mexican walk free from the Court Room. Yeah, the BATF is really looking out for gun owners.

  7. He’s absolutely right and you guys are bringing into question the “intelligent” part of your group name.

I find it surprising that you guys aren’t the most vocal in supporting many of the gun control laws we propose. You would be the first winners. The gun owners who qualify in my perfect world would include most of you but would not include many of the bad apples who make the news every day. We’d finally be able to get off your backs.

    • Except you expressly said you’d do no such thing, or, in your own words…

All right, I was exaggerating. If you guys suddenly cooperated with the common sense gun control laws that we propose and we saw a tremendous decrease in gun violence, we would naturally want stricter laws in order to lower even more the remaining gun violence. Eventually, I and most of the others would conclude that no guns at all in civilian hands is the best way to go.
