“A number of the anti-gun provisions make no sense. Take the limit on high-capacity magazine clips. The president wants a limit of 10 rounds. Maybe gun owners want 70. So they compromise at 25. Does this make mass shootings less deadly? A deranged shooter might instead wear a holster for easy access to additional weapons, or he might just switch out an empty magazine for a full one, which takes a few seconds. And what about all the high-capacity clips out there already? Would it take 10 years or 100 to get rid of them? It is the lack of common sense in these measures (which seem to come from people who know very little about fighting crime or about guns) and willingness to paint opponents as irresponsible or anti-child that is so grating, not to mention unconducive to progress.” – Jennifer Rubin in Guns or butter? 1. I don’t know what context this comment was made in, but very well said. Common sense seems to be lacking among the “common sense” crowd.

    • Usually the ones who scream for something the most are the ones who know the least (or nothing) about the topic. “BUT IT’S COMMON SENSE!!” Yes, I’m sure it is, thank you and you may go now, back to the short bus with you.

  2. I’m seeing these news articles in a different light then intelligent criticism.

The mainstream media is more left then the politicians they’re writing about. As such, when the government does what the media wants they’re still not satisfied with the results. The only outcome that will shut up the press is a comprehensively European gun control structure that’s nationwide across the US. The NYT and other press outlets consider anything less then nationwide gun registration and “common sense” limits in guns, ammo, and concealed carry to be a cop out.One state which lowers magazine capacity to 7 rounds isn’t the progressive victory the media wants, and they’re making it clear in the editorials.

Until we all hand in arms singing kumbya , the press will not rest.

    • The press is just waiting for the next big story. They’ll stand on the graves of innocents preaching their righteous words until the newspapers stop selling and the website hits stop stacking.

2,300 kids dead in Syria. 60000 dead total. There is no mention of the Civil War in Syria on CNN’s main page but there is news about a 3 lb. gold fish.

    • We need to put equal restrictions on the 1a rights of the press to match the restrictions they put on our 2a rights. Let them feel the heat of banning and losing their civil rights. See how they like it.

  3. I hope the antis keep calling magazines clips so that they write legislation with the wrong name in there. I own three rifles that use clips. Does a 30 round clip even exist that can be used to load an internal magazine?

And to have a good discussion the other side needs to be educated on what they are trying to ban. Can a good case be made to ban 100 round beta mags? I think so, they are not of military utility and at least keeps in the spirit of the 2nd amendment. But the other side of the coin is allowing new sales of select fire weapons to be allowed through the ATF under Class III so I can get an M4. I can buy Class III weapons now if I have the money so it’s not a safety issue.

  4. unconducive to progress

Progress is hardly ever as great as “progressivists” pitch it.

“While the case for the progressivist view seems overwhelming, it’s hard to prove.”

    • The unconstitutional Standing Army that the Switzerland-model Militia was supposed to prevent makes no sense. We need to emancipate ourselves from such an engine of oppression, the greatest mischief that can possibly happen, and substitute the Standing Army with a Constitutional Militia.

Are you ready to support the COMPLETE 2A?

      __________
      • “The inhabitants of Switzerland emancipated themselves by the establishment of a Militia, which finally delivered them from the tyranny of their lords.” ~Representative Jackson, first U.S. Congress, when it met and turned to defense measures in 1791
      • “What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty….” ~Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment, I Annals of Congress at 750, August 17, 1789
      • “This [citizen-militia] appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army…” ~Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist, Number 29
      • “…no such engine of oppression as a standing army.” ~Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, 1814
      • “A standing army is one of the greatest mischief that can possibly happen.” ~James Madison

  5. Wow! An intelligent, non histrionic, look at gun control. I was beginning to think that was impossible in America! Kudos to the author.

  6. Two facts the grabbers apparently don’t know;
    1) It takes two seconds to swap out a magazine.
    2) It took 20 minutes for the police to arrive at Sandy Hook.

  7. “A few seconds”. WHO COMES UP WITH THIS CRAP? If you can’t change out a mag in two seconds flat, you belong in a nursing home!

  8. She’s the token conservative columnist at the Washington Post. For real insight into how the inside the beltway types think, read some of the comments that follow her columns. Apoplectic doesn’t even begin to describe some of what you’ll see.

  9. The left is losing control of the narrative. The WAPO is a liberal rag. There is a similar article in out local fish-wrapper. They are sensing a loss here, and are now trying to reason with the grim reaper.

They are confessing over-reach, and now hope to get just a little bit of something out of the debacle they helped create. If they thought they were winning, they would be twisting the knife right now.

    • I for one hope you’re right but we cannot afford to become complacent. We typically watch the CBS evening news if we watch anything of that sort. In their coverage they seem to at least try to give something approaching equal time to our point of view. But just the other night they ended their segment mentioning Chicago had just had another gun-related murder bringing their total for 2013 already up to some not to be believed number. Then they just let it hang there. The implication seemed to be there are too many guns out there. Of course there was no mention that Chicago has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation. There was no mention that the tough gun law cities have the most gun-related violence while the rest of the country’s violence has been dropping since passing more CC laws. My point is that public opinion is a very fickle thing, subject to easy manipulation. The last thing many people hear is often what they perceive to be the truth.
Here’s an idea for TTAG. Are there sufficient data out there to separate the data for DC, Chicago, NY, NJ, California, etc. from the rest of the country? The next time someone compares US gun crime rates to the rest of the industrialized world, it would be cool to pull out the figures for the part of the US that allow their citizens relatively easy access to the tools needed to exercise their rights as protected by the 2nd amendment. Then we could easily point out that the backwards anti-gun regions are wildly skewing the gun violence statistics for the country as a whole and they need to that they are the problem, not guns.

    • I think overreach was the name of thegame to begin with–you can’t get it if you don’t ask for it. So set the bar where you know it cannot be reached, then negoptiating to lower it makes you look “reasonable.” Or that you are caving into lobbying pressure from the NRA (called distributing the blame).

  10. We can give up AR’s,semi auto’s, mags & they can keep their criminal safe zones? Their fantasy world? This will pass, much like a bad Mexican dinner. If the bradys don’t like America & its constitution they can leave it & start another country. I’ll even donate a name, say…jonestown, what a paradise, no one had a gun except the nice guards, Randy

  11. To everyone cheering the author: her arguments, if you buy them, make the case for total gun control/ban.

On another note I’m starting to hear about “gun safety” legislation. We can all agree on gun safety, can’t we?

  12. Jen Rubin is the WaPo’s token conservative blogger. She’s certainly not representative of the MSM at all.

I do like her, despite the fact she’s been a long time Mitt Fangirl.

  13. Her overall message is unclear. The part DZ quoted seems to indicate she’s on the pro gun rights side, but the whole article comes to no clear conclusion that I can applaud. Almost seems like this was written to get gun prohibitionists slightly riled and more ardent in their beliefs and to lull the pro Second Amendment side into thinking we may have a sympathetic voice at WaPo. In short, it’s a trick.

  14. ‘Jennifer Rubin in Guns or butter? We can’t afford either’

Yup, America is broke and in huge short and long term debt because of the expenses supporting the police-security-military-industrial state and the nanny-welfare-socialist state.

  15. Steve opined that the Left is losing control of the dialog. This is not true since there is no dialog. There is a narrative, however, and the Left has total control over it. Total. The left dominates the media and the media controls the message. We will see an incessant drumbeat of leftist bullsh!t that will drown out anything that we have to say. In the end, we will be screwed, and the Constitution made irrelevant, by the Left media. They will not only determine the parameters of the Second Amendment, but also the First. The First Amendment will only apply to the Left — and hey, we’re halfway there already. Poor Jennifer is whistling in a graveyard.

  16. Holy F’ng shit, I actually agree with this Likudnik, on a few things, for once!

    2A battle… bringing weird bedfellows together…

Now only if this neoCON natural contraceptive made sense… on everything else…

  17. Give this woman a BIG pat on the back we need women like here to help tech the people that these gun and mag bans will NOT work. Good for her!!

  18. This is the thing I try to explain to my liberal friends. A mag change in a firefight can make the difference. During a DGU, changing a mag can end you. That’s why you practice mag changes, fine tune that motor skill, and put as much time between the start and a reload. If you carry a gun designed for plus 10 size mags, and you are limited to ten. good luck. There’s no way to limit the mag size of a criminal without limiting the mag size of the rest of us. The people that matter, those trying to protect our lives. A mag change does not often make the difference for a mass shooter, usually no one is in a position to do anything. Let us protect ourselves.

    • “Giffords had set up a table outside the store and about 20 to 30 people were gathered around her when Jared Lee Loughner drew a pistol and shot Giffords in the head.[17][18] The shooting was caught on video by a store security camera.[14][19]

Loughner allegedly proceeded to fire apparently randomly at other members of the crowd.[2][20] He reportedly used a 9mm Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol with a 33-round magazine.[21][22] A nearby store employee said he heard “15 to 20 gunshots”.[23] Loughner stopped to reload, but dropped the loaded magazine from his pocket to the sidewalk, from where bystander Patricia Maisch grabbed it.[24] Another bystander clubbed the back of the assailant’s head with a folding chair, injuring his elbow in the process, representing the 14th injury.[25] The gunman was tackled to the ground by 74-year-old retired US Army Colonel Bill Badger,[26] who had been shot himself,”
