“’There is zero downside to understanding the safety of firearms,’ Rep. Joel Kleefisch, R-Oconomowoc, an avid hunter and co-sponsor of the firearms-safety bill, told this newspaper. ‘The use of a firearm comes with a massive responsibility. In a state where firearms are part of our heritage, entertainment, sustenance — it’s imperative those using firearms know how to handle them and maintain them safely.’ Replace ‘firearm’ with ‘sex’ in this statement, and you’ve got a pretty good argument for teaching teens how to use condoms.” – Chris Rickert in Safe guns? Yes. Safe sex? Not so much [via madison.com]

    • So I’m not the only one who uses finger cots. For me, it’s primarily on those rainy wet winter mornings, where the thought of water going down the barrel makes me wince.

    • “Over the Johnson? I wouldn’t know.”

It lessens the experience, Tom. At least for moi. (For some guys, it can be a plus, a cure for a biological ‘hair trigger’, so to speak. *cough*)

The author is pointing out the hypocrisy of teaching actual, real gun safety in high school when the guy who introduced the legislation voted no on teaching sex ed in high school.

Say what you will on whether sex ed *ought* to learned at home, far too many don’t, and that has life-changing consequences for those without the knowledge. Guns are much the same way.

The article quoted is serious good news, there is apparently real gun safety in school being debated. I hope the legislation gets passed…

    • What we need in EVERY school is gun education classes, sex education classes and driving education classes. Guns, just like sex and vehicles, can kill you or someone else. Education is the ONLY answer to reducing the unwanted and unneeded deaths that occur each year that involve these three subjects. BUT, if you’re a bleeding heart, stupid, Liberal cupcake, you will NOT want the classes on guns and probably NOT the other two as well.

  1. Really getting tired of lumping in guns with dicks all the time.

Its like the “go to” argument for the illiterate.

Society has me about 2 seconds away from walking around naked.
I like firearms- “must have a tiny dick”
I drive a diesel truck- “must have a tiny dick”
I’m into muscle cars- “I bet there tiny dick”
I like online gaming- “whoa, tiny dick headed this way”

    As a twist on this.

I see no harm in teaching kids how to work guns or have sex, just explain how everything works and then tell them not to do it.

    easy peasy……. idiots.

    • All those hits on the tiny dick scale…. you must have an innie. Jk
      I do as well apparently.
      Lifted diesel truck.
      Gun owner.
      Have a muscle car.
Not into the online gaming though.
Must be tiny. Although my wife likes it.

      • guess I’m still wound up over the Cocks not Glocks movement.

The aliens were right, we’re going to destroy ourselves by arguing to no end mute points while the big problems continue to expand.

      • Thats because miata screams “I have a vagina” haha just kidding theyre neat little cars, if only they came with a turbo or a bigger motor they would be little rockets stock.

  2. After reading the above, I’m not certain how many people to say F U to, and I ain’t clicking on any of the links.

Definitely F WI, they definitely sh_t some people out whose parents owe us an abortion.

Conservatives don’t advocate for teaching kids about safe sex apart from their parents. You might say/think: “kids are going to ‘do it anyway’? But you can ad your name to the list above.

    • I love Wisconsin. Might buy a place there when I retire. Yes, they have Milwaukee and Madison. Every state has its excretory orifice somewhere. But it’s the state that Elected Governor Scott Walker, then when the lunatics tried to recall him he was “re-elected” by an even wider margin!

Wisconsin has figured out how to bilk Chicagoans and rich suburbanites out of millions of dollars in tourist revenue every year. For those of us in Illinois, sanity lies beyond the cheddar curtain. They have an actual balanced state budget and everything!

  3. The same people who want “safe sex” taught to children are the same ones who DON’T want gun safety taught to children. Or any information about guns. Its the same way in the soon to be “Utopia of California.”

    • That’s not entirely true. Some of us out in the world know our children need knowledge of safe practices involving sex as well as firearms. I’ve ensured my children know about both, as I know only one person will be there for them to guude them and assist
with mitigating their individual circumstances, and that is themselves. For me to do less would be a disservice to them.

  4. “The bill authored by Rep. Ken Skowronski, R-Franklin, and Sen. Terry Moulton, R-Chippewa Falls, would require the Department of Public Instruction to work with the Department of Natural Resources, a law enforcement agency or some other firearms safety organization to create a curriculum for the elective firearms course.”

    — snip —

“Gary DeSmidt, who works with Wisconsin’s clay-target program, said participation has increased by 10 percent or more every year since 2004 and now has more than 3,400 athletes.”

Here’s evidence interest in firearms among the young has been steadily increasing for over *10 years running*.

This, people, is what winning the culture war on guns looks like.

Come to think of it, trap and skeet in college sounds like a perfect way to introduce the children of the ‘urban elite’ to guns in general…

    • Just call the NRA. I’m confident they have an “Eddie Eagle” package all ready that they can send to any school that will use it.

    • I bnet it will never pass cause of the cost to do the education. In this state (MI) it would not cause no $$ was sent along w/ the mandate. Mayube the author fixed that but I suspect not.

  5. Meh, I say teach em both and to be of good character so they know when to do either. Perhaps it can all be summed up with “common sense” but that may be a bit of a stretch in today’s world.

  6. Comparing gun education to sex education is one of the most successful tactics I have ever used when talking to anti-gunners. It has never produced less than a full stop to their argument.

    • I’ve had success and fun taking their “let’s regulate guns like cars” argument and running with it. They tend to come away realizing how overly restricted firearms already are, as well as appreciating the wisdom of being careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

  7. I have no problem teaching kids schoolwide basic gun safety, as in Eddie the Eagle material, starting in kindergarten. Neither do I have a problem teaching high school kids how to operate actual firearms, in an elective or extracurricular like JROTC.

With sex education, I’m ok as well with teaching middle schoolers the basics of puberty in a one-time gym class session. I’m fine with teaching high school freshmen more about the reproduction, contraception, and STDs, too, as part of their Health class curriculum.

The problem with public school sex ed us that it never stops there at the mechanics of it. Public schools inevitably dive into indoctrination about alternative lifestyles and the politics of gender and gender identity. These topics are far too advanced for kids who got their first peach fuzz five minutes ago. These topics are far too sensitive to be addressed by liberal, unionized government employees.

This is how we end up with assigned reading to elementary school kids like “Heather has two mommies” and “Daddy’s roommate”, as well as how we get schools passing out “fisting kits” to students. The schools just can’t be trusted with sex ed.

That’s entirely different from and hardly hypocritical in having outside experts like the NRA conduct firearm safety or the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard operating JROTC programs.

    • Public schools inevitably dive into indoctrination about alternative lifestyles and the politics of gender and gender identity

Shuuush the PURPOSE of gov’t school “sex ed” is supposed to be a secret.

    • Exactly. When a liberal talks about the need for sex ed, that have no intention of this being a discussion between the child and the parent. Instead, they mean a class of why its ok to take one up the poop chute and oh by the way, here’s how you do it – now give it a try.

    • That’s my worry. The State will just bastardize it and make into a shadow of what it was intended to be.

Side note: where can I get one of these fisting kits?

    • That was very well said. I tend to come down on the side of yes to sex ed in schools, but your comment has gone a long way toward changing my mind. And it’s weird, because I’m young (22, and no, not even remotely liberal), but I got out before the bullshit of “gender theory” really became a thing. You’re exactly right though. While the idea itself may be sound, it seems the powers that be cannot extricate it from the other, tangentially related topics that ARE harmful. Which is unfortunate, but it is reality

  8. 1. Always treat every firearm as though it is loaded.
    (Your “gun” IS always loaded.)
    2. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
(Unless you are married SHE is NEVER a safe direction.)
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
(Keep HER off your trigger unless you are prepared to fire. A negligent discharge can lead to long-lasting and very expensive consequences.)
    4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
(Targets of opportunity often obscure hidden surprises.)

Remember, a safety only works if you use it and even then all of the four rules MUST be observed.

    • “1. Always treat every firearm as though it is loaded.
      (Your “gun” IS always loaded.)”

Enough alcohol is a recipe for a ‘Failure To Fire’.

      (So I have heard…)

      • With firearms enough alcohol too often results in failure to NOT fire!

In the context of the rules above alcohol may result in failure to fire. It seldom results in failures to ATTEMPT to fire and does not change the fact that the “gun” is always loaded, even if you can’t get it to go off. 😉

        • Macduff. What three things does drink especially provoke?
Porter. Marry, sir, nose-painting, sleep and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes, and unprovokes; it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance; therefore, much drink may be said to be an equivocator with lechery: it makes him, and it mars him; it sets him on, and it takes him off; it persuades him, and disheartens him; makes him stand to, and not stand to; in conclusion, equivocates him in a sleep, and, giving him the lie, leaves him.

  9. Abstinence is a foolish policy. Kids will have sex if they want, will find alcohol if they want, will get into drugs if they want, will play with guns if they want. Teach your kids responsibility and they either won’t want the consequences or they’ll take steps to mitigate the chances of harm.

Should the state set up requirements for how I raise my kids? Outside of stepping in to stop an abusive parent, NO! FUK OFF!!!!

Picture any state setting up a test before you’re allowed to vote, or before you’re allowed to speak, or before you’re allowed legal representation, or before you’re allowed to assemble in groups and see if that answer sits well with the courts.

    • Now, schools teaching gun safety? Absolutely! They teach sex ed right? There should be a class that teaches kids how to adult. Balancing a checkbook, filing taxes, creating a job resume, gun safety, ect. I’d put my kids in that in a heartbeat. Make them take it twice.

      • “Now, schools teaching gun safety? Absolutely! They teach sex ed right?”

That was the POINT of the article.

The author was pointing out that the guy who introduced the high school gun education law voted *no* on teaching sex ed…

        • Good for that politician. I support half of what I’ve heard him vote for in schools. But I’m 100% sure this author opposes gun safety in schools and writes his article to discredit anyone who supports gun safety

      • “There should be a class that teaches kids how to adult.”

That is what school should be about. We should establish minimum standards for how to be an adult, such as literacy, arithmetic, the founding principles of the nation, how government works, basic scientific principles and methods, basic finance, general rules of safety for things people are likely to encounter (sex, guns, traffic, etc.), actual health information (first aid, how to exercise, how to eat healthy), keep your hands to yourself and your stuff unless you have permission. Teach it in schools. Everything else (religion, sexuality, politics, Ford or Dodge, etc.) should be left to parents.

If you can’t get that done with $140K and 13 years, then you need to close up shop.

    • Define “abusive”. You’ve already stated how you FEEL some things are abusive, it remains a very subjective goal post.

      • Withholding food to the point of malnourishment, burns, assaults hard enough to cause internal bleeding, these sorts of things. Care to claim parents can do whatever they want to their kids consequence free? Or are you just being contrary?

        • Agree those are “abusive”, my point is it that it subjective. Wasn’t it you that posted that not vaccinating children was child abuse?

        • See, this is what I was talking about. This isn’t a conversation about vaccines, and your trolling for an argument on it. Just accept that most people think anti-vaccers, or whatever you call yourselves, are crazies.

        • Ah, I remember your anti science rant. I think that like everything else in life, some vaccines are more effective than others. My wife and I gave our kids most vaccines after a long talk with the doctor, we skipped one or two that only affect young children who are around other children. We didn’t have daycare for our kids cause my wife stays home with them.

      • “Define “abusive”.”

Eyelids propped open with toothpicks and forced to watch video of Hillary?

(“Torture” being defined as that same video being ‘au naturale’…)

        • That’s 2 counts of Child Abuse. One for the toothpicked open eyelids and one for making them watch a Hillary anything *shudders*

        • Strapped down to a bed and hooked up to an intravenous drip of Viagra. Then made to perform forced “love making” session during Hilary, DiFi, and Pelosi synchronized rut. All whilst Michael Bolton plays on repeat in the background.

  10. What’s a condom? Oh yeah, that’s right. I used one, once. Some buddies and I shared one for a whole week in south Florida. It was awesome. It was kinda small for my liking, but sometimes you just gotta suck it up and squeeze into…

No, wait, that was a condo….Ohhh, condoms. Yeah, I love condoms! I always put them on my dogs. Nothing like a condom on a hot, juicy dog. My wife doesn’t like it though. She usually likes her dogs and burgers naked…. wait, hold on, that’s condiments…

Oh no, WTF did I just say?!?!

  11. I grew up in Wisconsin and the only firearms safety being taught in my little town was that given by one’s father or other adult relatives. It seemed to work okay – no negligent/accidental discharges that I heard about. Most teens were killed in drunk driving accidents. Most boys got a .22 rifle or a shot gun when they were 12 – it was like a rite of passage and it wasn’t unusual to see a boy walking through town with his rifle/shotgun over his shoulder (action open) headed for the fields outside of town for a little pheasant/squirrel/rabbit hunting. When deer season came around, the school went into “Thanksgiving vacation” for two weeks, since they knew that not many boys would be there. Also, as I recall, a box of 50 .22 LR was less than a dollar, and .30-30 ammo cost about five bucks for a box of 20. I didn’t get into handguns until I went into the Marine Corps.

As to sex ed, when I was a teen (60’s) it wasn’t taught in school. The parents taught it – it was none of the school’s business. As I recall it, there was the “birds and bees” talk from Dad, and then whatever I could pick up from heresay from friends, or from what experience I was able to get necking and petting. Teens had sex, but mostly we were scared as hell (even with a condom – there was no other birth control then) of knocking up a girl and getting pinned down by that – especially when boys were getting ready to go to college or into the service. Kids today don’t know how good they have it with all the sex ed resources available to them – even the lifestyle propaganda.

  12. Two things…

First, this post needs an edit to clarify just WHO is saying WHAT. It’s the author of the piece who is suggesting sex education should go along with gun safety training in schools.

Second, an in regards to that author, who is from Madison, WI and refers to himself as an urbanite might, just might, be a bit of a self-deluded douche.
