The author is pointing out the hypocrisy of teaching actual, real gun safety in high school when the guy who introduced the legislation voted no on teaching sex ed in high school.
Say what you will on whether sex ed *ought* to learned at home, far too many don’t, and that has life-changing consequences for those without the knowledge. Guns are much the same way.

What we need in EVERY school is gun education classes, sex education classes and driving education classes. Guns, just like sex and vehicles, can kill you or someone else. Education is the ONLY answer to reducing the unwanted and unneeded deaths that occur each year that involve these three subjects. BUT, if you’re a bleeding heart, stupid, Liberal cupcake, you will NOT want the classes on guns and probably NOT the other two as well.

That’s not entirely true. Some of us out in the world know our children need knowledge of safe practices involving sex as well as firearms. I’ve ensured my children know about both, as I know only one person will be there for them to guude them and assist

Comparing gun education to sex education is one of the most successful tactics I have ever used when talking to anti-gunners. It has never produced less than a full stop to their argument.
I’ve had success and fun taking their “let’s regulate guns like cars” argument and running with it. They tend to come away realizing how overly restricted firearms already are, as well as appreciating the wisdom of being careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

I have no problem teaching kids schoolwide basic gun safety, as in Eddie the Eagle material, starting in kindergarten. Neither do I have a problem teaching high school kids how to operate actual firearms, in an elective or extracurricular like JROTC.
With sex education, I’m ok as well with teaching middle schoolers the basics of puberty in a one-time gym class session. I’m fine with teaching high school freshmen more about the reproduction, contraception, and STDs, too, as part of their Health class curriculum.
The problem with public school sex ed us that it never stops there at the mechanics of it. Public schools inevitably dive into indoctrination about alternative lifestyles and the politics of gender and gender identity. These topics are far too advanced for kids who got their first peach fuzz five minutes ago. These topics are far too sensitive to be addressed by liberal, unionized government employees.
This is how we end up with assigned reading to elementary school kids like “Heather has two mommies” and “Daddy’s roommate”, as well as how we get schools passing out “fisting kits” to students. The schools just can’t be trusted with sex ed.
That’s entirely different from and hardly hypocritical in having outside experts like the NRA conduct firearm safety or the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard operating JROTC programs.

And it’s weird, because I’m young (22, and no, not even remotely liberal), but I got out before the bullshit of “gender theory” really became a thing. You’re exactly right though. While the idea itself may be sound, it seems the powers that be cannot extricate it from the other, tangentially related topics that ARE harmful. Which is unfortunate, but it is reality

2. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
(Unless you are married SHE is NEVER a safe direction.)
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Picture any state setting up a test before you’re allowed to vote, or before you’re allowed to speak, or before you’re allowed legal representation, or before you’re allowed to assemble in groups and see if that answer sits well with the courts.

That is what school should be about. We should establish minimum standards for how to be an adult, such as literacy, arithmetic, the founding principles of the nation, how government works, basic scientific principles and methods, basic finance, general rules of safety for things people are likely to encounter (sex, guns, traffic, etc.), actual health information (first aid, how to exercise, how to eat healthy), keep your hands to yourself and your stuff unless you have permission. Teach it in schools. Everything else (religion, sexuality, politics, Ford or Dodge, etc.) should be left to parents.
If you can’t get that done with $140K and 13 years, then you need to close up shop.

I grew up in Wisconsin and the only firearms safety being taught in my little town was that given by one’s father or other adult relatives. It seemed to work okay – no negligent/accidental discharges that I heard about. Most teens were killed in drunk driving accidents. Most boys got a .22 rifle or a shot gun when they were 12 – it was like a rite of passage and it wasn’t unusual to see a boy walking through town with his rifle/shotgun over his shoulder (action open) headed for the fields outside of town for a little pheasant/squirrel/rabbit hunting. When deer season came around, the school went into “Thanksgiving vacation” for two weeks, since they knew that not many boys would be there. Also, as I recall, a box of 50 .22 LR was less than a dollar, and .30-30 ammo cost about five bucks for a box of 20. I didn’t get into handguns until I went into the Marine Corps.
As to sex ed, when I was a teen (60’s) it wasn’t taught in school. The parents taught it – it was none of the school’s business. As I recall it, there was the “birds and bees” talk from Dad, and then whatever I could pick up from heresay from friends, or from what experience I was able to get necking and petting. Teens had sex, but mostly we were scared as hell (even with a condom – there was no other birth control then) of knocking up a girl and getting pinned down by that – especially when boys were getting ready to go to college or into the service. Kids today don’t know how good they have it with all the sex ed resources available to them – even the lifestyle propaganda.
Two things…
First, this post needs an edit to clarify just WHO is saying WHAT. It’s the author of the piece who is suggesting sex education should go along with gun safety training in schools.
Second, an in regards to that author, who is from Madison, WI and refers to himself as an urbanite might, just might, be a bit of a self-deluded douche.
