“You will find guys who are doing firearms trafficking, or knuckleheads who come down here from other places and acquire guns and steal guns and take them back up North and dispose of them there because you have places like New York, New Jersey and D.C. where the laws are restrictive.” — ATF spokesman Gerod King in SC remains a top exporter of stolen guns [at wltx.com]

  1. Well…. It does make sense. Thieves will go where the valuables are. If they’re after guns, they’ll go to an area where gun owners abound. If they’re after gobs of cash/gold, they’ll go rob a rich man’s house. This isn’t exactly a ground breaking discovery by the geniuses at the ATF.

  2. Innit odd though, that the places with “lax gun laws” have lower crime rates than the places where the guns are trafficked to?

Illinois blames the laws in Indiana for it’s crime, but Indiana has lower crime rates.

It defies gun ban logic, if there really is such a thing.

  3. Isn’t this the antis’ excuse as to why Chicago is so dangerous all while not addressing why the states and places with less restrictive gun laws are not murder-central?

    • Pretty much. They certainly don’t want to address the real problem.

In Chicago, a 15 year old walking to basketball practice with his twin brother was murdered by a 17 year old this past weekend over a jacket. Where is the outrage? The people protesting in the streets? Where’s Jesse?

  4. “SC remains a top exporter of stolen guns”

Should read “south Carolinians top victims of gun theft.”

It’s almost as if they were painting the impression of common, otherwise law abiding gun owners (read; white, christian) as brazen smugglers, all too willing to sell their expensive property for half price on the black market just for the chance to see some thug use it in a crime.

This sort of slight of hand with the language is meant to turn the public against legal gun owners, not criminals.

  5. Translation:
We could keep guns out of the hands of criminals in New York and New Jersey if we banned guns in the entire United States of America.

    Flaw:
Even if government could close one distribution channel, criminals will exploit another.

    Example:
Government outlawed narcotics sales without a prescription. No problem … criminals smuggle narcotics in from other countries, make the narcotics at secret labs within the United States, steal narcotics from drug stores/companies, and unscrupulous physicians write prescriptions improperly.

The same thing can, does, and will happen with firearms. The problem is NOT the availability of firearms. The problem is our revolving door joke of a justice system that keeps returning violent criminals to the streets.

  6. Chicago’s corrupt politicians love to blame Indiana for its gun crimes, but it seems the reverse is true. More restrictive gun laws cause more crime in neighboring states. The ATF says so…

  7. So, in effect, if the states of NY, NJ, et al, would repeal their restrictive laws, the crime rates would go down in neighboring states.
Or maybe I’m just a simpleton.

  8. Step One: Steal gun.
Step Two: Sell gun to NY hood.
Step Three: Hood uses gun to commit a crime or dozen.
Step Four: Hood turns in gun at “No Questions Asked” gun buy up program.

    • Step Five: Reclaimed guns from taxpayer funded buy back are welded together to make anti-gun violence “art” at a children’s playground.

      Rinse and repeat.

  9. “You will find guys who are doing firearms trafficking, or knuckleheads who come down here from other places and acquire guns and steal guns and take them back up North and dispose of them there because you have places like New York, New Jersey and D.C. where the laws are restrictive.” — ATF spokesman Gerod King

So, Mr. Gerod King is saying the bad guys still have guns? Yea? Well do the good guys still have guns? Sounds like gun control isn’t working up there.

  10. It took ATFE long enough to finally notice what we POTG have been saying for years. This spokesman ought to go look in a mirror to find out who the real “knuckleheads” are…

  11. They forgot to mention that North Carolina is the chief exporter of Sunday alcohol to South Carolina border counties. SC still has blue laws on the books in most places. NC is providing illegal beverages to SC therefore creating Smugglers/Criminals. ATF SHOULD BAN ALL ALCOHOL SALES IN NC!! (sarc)

    • Yup! When I lived in Lancaster I would drive up 521 to the Harris Teeter in Ballantine to get beer on Sunday.
Now I live in Horry County and we have Sunday beer sales.

  12. Unless I read the article incorrectly, most crimes using guns are stolen guns which means the whole “gun show loophole” is total BS.

On another note, I would never leave my gun in a locked car unsecured. I have a lock box in my cars and trucks. If not for guns, I use the lock boxes for wallets or other items of value i may not want to carry depending on where I am going.

    • I sure hope you bought a better one than stack-on’s, which I can get into without even using tools. (It’s better than absolutely nothing, because the guy who breaks into your car might not know the secret, but it isn’t worth the money I spent on it.)

  13. You see, criminals in states with strict gun laws can travel all the way to SC for their guns, while criminals in SC can’t drive across town to buy one.

  14. We need mandatory background checks! Then, thieves would have to go through a background check before they steal a gun. It will stop gun theft!

  15. SC is number 11, and it is somehow news? no mention of which state(s) lead in stolen gun trafficking? slow news day in Greenville?

  16. Huh, the wind must have knocked down the “No Straw Purchasing” signs in SC. Why else would people be engaging in a known illegal activity? Just gotta put’em back up and the problem stops, right?

Sometimes, I think there’s money to be made in tshirts with “Don’t mug me…it’s illegal” for all those communist states.
