It almost always comes down to identity politics. Liberals, and usually women more then men, are for gun control because it is viewed by many of them as a ofwg thing. Same reason they will condemn Christians as a group, even though they largely identify as Christians. Christians as a block are viewed as conservatives politically when in reality they are probably the most liberal of the big religions politically speaking. Whereas Muslims generally are more conservative on social issues and many of thier religious scholars and leaders promote what would be considered bigoted hate speach towards women, homosexuals, and other religious groups if i said those things. But because they generally vote demoncratic they get a pass.
This goes both ways of course. And im sure part of it has to do with uninformed people, but I think it really boils down to turning a blind eye to the faults of our perceived allies, it takes more votes than any one group can supply to win elections.
