“Like I’ve always said, the Second Amendment, the provision that gives every American the right to keep and bear arms, is blind and stupid. In its relentless pimping for the gun industry, the NRA has unleashed an avalanche of deadly weapons on this gun-crazy country. Just as [it] protects access to weapons for cops and hunters, it also protects access to weapons for domestic abusers, mental patients, jerk-offs on the no-fly list, all-around dim bulbs, and now little children.” – Geraldo Rivera [via Facebook]

    • No doubt. Apparently he’s gotten bored looking for Capone’s vaults and is willing to try his hand at being the American Piers Morgan.

      • If guns and gun owners were as evil as Geraldo thinks they are, then his helicopter would have been shot down at Ruby Ridge. Instead, the lie that shots were fired at the helicopter got two of the Weaver family killed. Thanks a lot Geraldo now GFY!

        • “If guns and gun owners were as evil as Geraldo thinks they are, then his helicopter would have been shot down at Ruby Ridge. Instead, the lie that shots were fired at the helicopter got two of the Weaver family killed. Thanks a lot Geraldo now GFY!”

You could’ve stopped at “If guns and gun owners were as evil as Geraldo”, nothing’s more dangerous than his damn microphone, how many people need to die at the hands of his stupidity before we can ban him?

“Thanks a lot Geraldo now GFY!” to which I would add #NaCl.
          (btw – # does not = “hash-tag” or “hash-pipe” or crumped “hash-foil wrapper”)

    • Geraldo is a fool. The Second does not give anything. It states that the right is inherent and the gov shall not infringe on it. He is wrong about many things. This is just one of them.

    • That’s pretty much the first thing I thought of too.

“oh great, the empty head that brought us the most anti-climactic news scoop ever has a cute opinion on gun control.”

    • And one of the more entertaining parts of that stupid show (“Al Capone’s Vault”) was the part where Geraldo got to shoot the full-auto Tommy Gun, and then turned to the camera with a big, shit-eating grin on his face. He clearly found out that a full-auto Thompson was a lot of fun. Since Geraldo is neither a cop nor a hunter, which one of his categories fits him: “… domestic abusers, mental patients, jerk-offs on the no-fly list, all-around dim bulbs, and now little children…”?

I vote for a combination of mental patient, jerk-off, and all-around dim bulb.

    • I want to believe our Founding Fathers had batshit crazy journalists in their day and age too when they penned the First Amendment.

      • They did and they make today’s “journalism” look TAME! Some of the claims made and stories written by journalists back then are just outrageously funny. They didn’t have much of a limit on what they would say….but they always made it sound very “civil” because of the use of “proper” English. Limbaugh had a few hilarious stories in years past concerning political news during the revolution and so forth.

  1. Gerald claims he’s a Republican but he’s more liberal than most Democrats.

He seems a little confused about the constitution too.

    • From the way he speaks on the 2A issue, he sounds like he’s Bloomberg’s and Watts’ bitch regardless of anything else he might claim.

      • He’s pretty far left on just about everything, voted for the big BO twice, he should just give it up and admit that he’s a brain dead liberal Democrat.

    • No, nor do they give it any thought.

If anyone says, “the NRA is just a shill for the gun industry,” ask them this: If the gun industry wants nothing more than to sell us more guns (which is true), and if every single gun they manufacture must be sold through an FFL (also true), and if every sale from an FFL requires a background check (true again), and if every background check slightly increases the cost of purchasing a gun (see, administrative fee, employee time, record keeping costs, consumer aversion to the Feds being all up in our business, and other misc. red tape), then from a purely capitalistic standpoint, wouldn’t the gun industry WANT universal background checks, thus imparting those same costs on the secondary market?

The fact is gun manufactures make nothing on a used sale, so it’s in their best financial interest to make secondary sales as difficult as possible. Therefore, if the NRA were a shill for the gun industry, with no other purpose than to line some capitalist, child-murdering, fat-cat pockets, the NRA would wholeheartedly support universal background checks. Yet they don’t. Interesting.

      • I disagree. Reduced transaction cost for resale increases the asset’s liquidity, thus it depreciates more slowly and retains more of its value during the period of my ownership, thus it’s a more attractive purchase for me. So I’ll buy more, or I’ll pay a higher price.

        • While potential resale value certainly factors into the purchase decision of a new firearm, it’s predominantly going to be the relative resale value between similar products. For example, you might use resale value to help justify purchasing a Colt 1911 over an RIA.

Here, however, the added transactional cost to a resale would apply equally to all firearms, and it is a cost that may or may not be incurred by the buyer of a new gun (I’d venture to say that most gun owners don’t plan on selling their gun at the time they purchase it). Moreover, since that added transactional cost would affect the resale price of all firearms equally, I highly doubt it would have any practical effect on a consumer’s decision to purchase a NEW gun. I just can’t imagine someone at the counter holding a shiny, new AR saying, “you know, I’d buy this thing if only it weren’t for that dang background check on the secondary market that may or may not affect me depending on if I ever want to sell this thing.” The fact is, we’re going to buy guns anyway.

While the added transnational cost probably wouldn’t sway someone who was otherwise going to buy a new gun, it would have an effect on someone who was debating between a new vs used gun. As the price difference between them decreases, more and more consumers will opt to pay the difference for a new gun. More new gun sales means more profits.

      • I mean… technically isn’t the NSFF the shill for the gun industry. The NRA is basically a wine of the month club.

I wish the reporters would just do a little fact checking before reporting. Now It’s time to go to my inbox and check out what amazing NRA offers there are today. Oooh! 10% off car rentals!

        • Barry, all membership organizations do that. I belonged to greenpeace about 25 years ago and I still get offers from them! My wife belonged to a Greek American organization she had joined when her home country of Cyprus was invaded. She still gets everything from travel offers etc from them.

And book/Wine of the month club are sellers you engage in a contract with to buy regularly. NRA is not a subscription to be sent a gun each monthly. your analogy is wrong

NRA is the largest civil rights group in the US. It also has the highest proportion of income from membership dues of any major advocacy organization. Mother Jones made a big deal of a big chunk coming from advertising and about 50% from dues. Yet in fact less than 5% of ACLU and NAACP income, and less than 10% of Greenpeace income, comes from individual membership dues, while 50% of NRA income does come from dues.

  2. I love how all these folks completely miss that the Constitution protects folks you don’t like/agree with from you just as much as it protects your rights from them.

    • I’m sorry, did I miss the people calling for his arrest, or do you just not understand that the Bill of Rights is for protection of the individual from the government, not other individuals?

    • Unfortunately a lot of “upper class” and even many “middle class” people feel that the second amendment is out of date.

When you live in a relatively safe community with regular police patrols where crime rarely happens, it is easy to think you have no reason to be armed. The longer someone spends like this, the more they have trouble understanding why others might want/need to be armed as they have trouble putting themselves in others’ shoes.

The first few places I lived when I moved to the city I live in now were in fairly high-crime areas. I bought my first gun around this time. Now, more than 10 years later I live in suburbia where crime is pretty rare, and it is easy to forget why I home carry.

This is just another example of a minority of people being out of touch with what the majority needs, but wanting to make the decisions for everyone. They also seem to have trouble understanding one of the main reasons for the 2A (resistance to tyranny). It is strange how people can say those that want to be prepared for a defense against tyranny are nutjobs. Especially at the same time they are angry about the NSA, TSA for acting against citizens yet can’t seem to connect the dots.

  3. His statement is factually inaccurate. The right is conveyed as a feature of citizenship. 2A codifies the right and places restrictions on government.

  4. Just another so called media grabbing politician/journalist, who is looking to increase his paycheck. While the mainstream media puts it on the air. Not worth my time listening to his opinions.

This lame duck deserves to live in an area where he wont come in contact with legal gun owners. That way they wont hurt themselves trying to protect him.

In my book that is what is meant when I stop and evaluate a DGU situation.

Would you risk yourself, family, or livelihood to protect him?

    • Strategically planted outrageous statements do tend to generate attention and notoriety for the speaker, huh. Wonder if Rivera is feeling insecure in his chosen career.

  5. This from a guy who tweeted a nude selfie while drunk.
Whenever I see him, I’m remember a skit Cheech and Chong did way back where his name was Horrendo Revolver.

  6. What is the euphemism … something about “[screw] you and the horse you rode in on!” ?????

According to Mr. Rivera, if a large group of people find something to be repugnant, it is A-OK to use government force to squash whatever they find to be repugnant. Got it.

What happens when several people find my faith — or lack thereof — to be repugnant? What happens when several people find my speech to be repugnant?

    • “According to Mr. Rivera, if a large group of people find something to be repugnant, it is A-OK to use government force to squash whatever they find to be repugnant. Got it.”

It’s not just Rivera and it certainly is not just guns.

Google up the ‘debate’ between recreational fishing and commercial fishing in the Gulf states and South Atlantic Coast states, if you want a fun example.

Using the Great Protector, government, is a past time. Pick your cause, align yourself, the lobby and campaign to have government give your group what YOU want while screwing the other guys.

      The New American Way.

  7. Geraldo is a well noted proponent of gun control, that is nothing new. He is neither Republican nor Libertarian, although he has claimed both from time to time.

TTAG Should have posted the whole screed including this bit

As the father of a sweet, smart nine year old daughter myself, the latest example of gross excess is the image of that pony-tailed New Jersey girl accidentally killing her gun range instructor. It is obscene and uncivilized to let a third grader shoot a fully automatic Uzi machine gun. What was she training for, revolution? Invasion? Service in the coming post-apocalyptic social disorder? Stupid, but just another of countless examples of how far into insanity we have let the gun nuts push us.”

    • As the father of a sweet, smart daughter myself, the latest example of gross excess is the image of any child watching TV or listening to Main Stream Media. It is obscene and uncivilized to let a child get their mind poisoned and manipulated. What are they training for, slaughter? Cattle cars? Service in the coming incarnation of Hitler’s Youth? Stupid, but just another of countless examples of how far into insanity we have let the Statist nuts push us.

      FIFY, Geraldo.

  8. Oh look, a “celebrity” journalist that is trying to stay relevant and put themselves in the public eye after a period of silence. He and Lindsey Lohan have something in common.

    • Yeah, he, she, and all the other big headed self important fading stars who are losing their relevance and following.

Guess their popularity is timing out. The word irrelevance comes to mind.

  9. It must be fun going through life lacking critical thinking skills.

On that note, the Guardian has a new article on the run on Saigas And Veprs. TTAG is quoted in the article and one lucky commenter had their post quoted. It was of course filled with crap and irrational fear mongering by anti gun zealots who lack any form of critical thinking.

  10. This is the same guy who pulled out his weapon(1911?) during a Desert Storm broadcast. I thought we left him in the desert.

  11. can we take seriously anyone who tries to switch minority status thru a name change? jerry rivers/geraldo rivera.

  12. The Second Amendment doesn’t “give” a thing to anyone, it protects a pre-existing natural right. By protecting said right, yes it means criminals can get guns too, but the difference is that with the right protected, innocent people can shoot back. Without it protected, criminals still exist and oftentimes still get guns but now innocents are at their mercy.

  13. A lawyer that never practiced, “journalist” that was un-imbedded for giving a posistion to the enemy, & was able to get a CCW permit in NY @ one point. If he’s a Republican the party must have turned more socialist than the Democrats. Tell our Muslim-Democrat President thathe is now a Republican. I guarantee that Communist News Network a.k.a. CNN will at least run this “news?” on the crawler if not a full piece.

  14. Children being able to use armed self-defense to put them on an even playing field with malicious adults is a good thing. Not a bad thing. Anyone seeking to take that away supports inequality and abuse by those innately more powerful and seeks to go back to a time where might makes right.

  15. I watched Geraldo say a couple of months ago, that he used to be able to walk safely in NYC, but since the recent mayors, Bloombritches and his socialist successor (my terms), that he is unable to walk with his daughter in NYC. Why does Geraldo think there is a difference?

  16. Just as [it] protects access to weapons for cops and hunters, it also protects access to weapons for domestic abusers, mental patients, jerk-offs on the no-fly list, all-around dim bulbs, and now little children.”

    Simply untrue.

Convicted domestic abusers, by law, cannot purchase firearms. This check is included on Form 4473, Questions 11(h) and 11(i). In many states, even having a restraining order can be sufficient to have your CCW suspended.

Adjudicated mental patients, by law, cannot purchase firearms. This check is included on Form 4473, Question 11(f).

The No Fly List is an extra-judicial collection of names, that has recently been ruled unconstitutional. Using it as a basis for denying second amendment rights would be an unconstitutional violation of due process.

As for dim bulbs: they are allowed to exercise their first-amendment rights, they are allowed to vote, and they are allowed to exercise their second-amendment rights – just as they are allowed to pose as serious journalists.

Little children, by law, cannot purchase firearms. FFLs cannot sell long guns to anyone under 18, or handguns to anyone under 21.

    • Legal particulars seem to be a problem for this ex lawyer. Guess he became a journalist because he found conjecture and drama more to his liking than ‘facts’ and following legal rules and precedent.

‘Course, socialist liberal progressives DO like fantasy much more than real world reality. Facts have never stopped this guy from painting his stories to the shade he likes.

    • Totally agree about the no-fly list in particular. It violates the right to freedom of movement after denying the right to face your accuser and be judged by a jury of your peers. Extending it to the 2A like the New Jersey legislature recently tried to do boggles the mind.

  17. “In 2001, during the War in Afghanistan, Rivera was derided for a report in which he claimed to be at the scene of a friendly fire incident; it was later revealed he was actually 300 miles away. Rivera blamed a minor misunderstanding for the discrepancy.

Controversy arose in early 2003, while Rivera was traveling with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq. During a Fox News broadcast, Rivera began to disclose an upcoming operation, even going so far as to draw a map in the sand for his audience. The military immediately issued a firm denunciation of his actions, saying it put the operation at risk; Rivera was nearly expelled from Iraq. Two days later, he announced that he would be reporting on the Iraq conflict from Kuwait.”

I think he has jerk off and dim bulb pretty well covered. Too bad for them that the 5 different people that he has been married to didn’t get the memo. I guess they never watched his shows either!

  18. Geraldo’s thinking that the only legitimate gun owners are “cops and hunters” reveals his complete lack of knowledge about gun ownership in the US.

  19. +1 Chip. At least Jerry looks good for his age. For anyone who thinks Fox is all rightwing republican here’s your answer. Jerry is a NY guy who hates guns and gun owners. On the 101 weapons list show he whined on & on about .38’s being “Saturday night specials”. And nearly cried about the death of the creepy a##ed John Lennon.

  20. Every time I hear this meat puppet speak I like to think back to when he got bashed in the head with a chair by a klan member…and smile

  21. “News Personality” – Is that a credential?

Remember when interviewers were either off-screen, or you would only see their backs? Maybe it was Barbara Walters who breached the 4th wall, getting her facial reactions on camera. Why should I care that Anderson Cooper is gay? Go back into your hole(s)!

  22. What is fascinating is how may total “has beens” like Rivera climb onto the tattered sailing nowhere anti gun rights boat in hopes of gaining some relevance.

  23. He’s done more damage by abusing his 1st amendment right than the firearms community he condemns. At least he’s getting lambasted in the comments.

  24. The NRA has unleashed an avalanche of weapons? How come nobody told me??? First, I miss out on their mythical, double extra super-secretive gun store, and now this. Give me guns, NRA, or I won’t renew my membership! Oh I hope they still have some left, I hate to be apparently the only one who missed out on this whole avalanche of guns giveaway thing.

  25. Man has no idea of what he is talking about…..our military is great because our kids are familiar with guns…..there is nothing wrong with gun only with the minds of some people….he should ban baseball bats because according to the FBI they are the number one murder weapon….guns are tenth. Geraldo has always had his head up his ass just like when he was imbedded with our troops in Iraq and he drew a map in the sand for the whole world to know that units location…..how do you talk logical to an ass like that…the military sent him home.

  26. Now if by “blind and stupid,” he means “impartial and not discriminating” I would agree. However, I don’t think he has that much nuance in his (lack of) word-smithing.

  27. Geraldo = classic progtard projection… replace the subject with the speaker’s identity, to get the true message.

“Like I’ve always said, …Geraldo…, is blind and stupid.”
