Hmm… But not all guns are violent. Perhaps I should apply for a grant to study what makes guns that commit violence, so violent. Is it the metallurgy, the machining, the surface finish? Since we’ve a priori discounted it being the hand that holds it, what else could it be?

Progressivism is absolutely a religion. To be totally honest, I am quite surprised that no one has challenged various Progressive policies and laws in the courts under that very premise.
It is no more appropriate to require that references to God be removed from a government building than it is to require that references to God be applied to a government building. Let each building administrator do whatever they want. If one administrator wants to display the Ten Commandments, great! If the next administrator wants to take them down, great! As long as there is no law (including indirectly delegated authority to a bureaucrat) that requires some reference or no reference to God, we should be good to go.
Freedom of religion means freedom to practice or ignore any religion. It does not mean freedom from any religion or government authority to ban any religion.
Building administrators for public buildings are government employees, therefore acting on behalf of the government. Erecting a Ten Commandments monument in a public building runs afoul of the First Amendment because it gives governmental endorsement to a specific religious tradition. It would be equally inappropriate to put up passages from the Koran, Buddhist scripture, or a billboard saying there is no God. Government shouldn’t be in the religion business.
Individuals in the government can hold any religious beliefs. It’s expressly forbidden to require specific religious beliefs of any kind for public office in the body of the Constitution itself (article VI, clause 3). However, a person acting on behalf of the government can’t work for or against religion. That’s why a teacher starting her classes with a prayer is unacceptable, and it’s equally unacceptable for a teacher to interfere with students praying on their own time between classes.
