Agreed, a President cannot pass laws, though he/she can issue executive orders re: the ATF that can be a pain in the ass for gun owners. As far as actual bans on types of guns that can be owned, that would take legislation passed by both the House and Senate, so if Hillary wins then keeping both in Republican majorities would prevent that.
The real danger is that the next president will appoint at least one and (especially if it is Hillary) up to four Supreme Court justices. Right now it is at 4-4 between those who voted to strike down the law in Heller, vs. those who want to reverse that decision.
All that means is that they tell me they love me before they butt fvck me.

I know that for no fault of her’s, Giffords lost part of her brains. Quantity-wise, it was a small loss, but a big one in terms of percentage. But Kelly? Is this the best that America has? Naval aviators and astronauts are disposable. They know this. The mission is far more important than any of the crew members. They want in that job someone who WILL NOT QUIT, *EVER*.
It’s the same personality type that Navy SEALs are known for, and two astronauts are in fact ex-Navy SEALs.

The explanation may be as simple as this:
Odds are that Kelly never devoted much thought to the issue of gun control. Suddenly his wife was attacked and suffered grievous bodily injury by someone using a firearm. Given the social and political circles they run in, a steady stream of people who apparently wish to help, point out that he could help stop things like this in future (he is a man of some knowledge and accomplishment, and was unable to stop an attack on his wife, after all – what man worthy of the title wouldn’t feel regret and guilt and desire to atone over that,) and all he has to do is stump for them on the gun control issue. He’s a can-do kind of guy (you don’t become an astronaut otherwise,) so naturally he throws himself into the task.
That doesn’t make him right, but it does make him more understandable.
An impulsive person’s initial response may have been as you described it. But I don’t think that astronauts are impulsive and in any case he had years to weigh the issue. I would agree that the canon fodder does not parse the world into Randian terms, but their leadership certainly does.

I attended a panel discussion headed by Mark and Gabby at the VA State Capitol, with a group of VCDL members. We were all carrying and all wearing our orange “Guns Save Lives” buttons. The VCDL was not allow a place on the panel, nor were we allowed to speak or ask questions. So much for 1A! Mark and Gabby did come over to us specifically and introduce themselves. They were very gracious and assured us that they support the RTKABA.
Then the panel discussion started and the whole RTKABA thing went to hell in a handbasket. Here’s what they want and they made it very clear.
