“A 16-year-old Detroit boy was shot in the head Thursday afternoon while he and friends were playing with a gun in the basement of a Virginia Park home,” clickondetroit.com reports, keeping it real (someone shot the victim). “The boy was in critical condition at a hospital but died when he was taken off of life support on Friday. Detroit police say his 19-year-old friend is in custody and is expected to be charged in connection with the death.” Terrible thing, but it is what it is: a negligent discharge. “According to a police source, the victim’s friend was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off and struck the teen.” Sigh. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

  1. a lot of these self inflicted wounds would be prevented (along with a lot of ND’s) if firearm safety was taught in grade school. oh well, if i bury my head in the sand, then i don’t have to worry about the world, right??

    • The same people who demand that we teach sex education to school kids “because they’re going to do it anyway, so they may as well have the health information”, are also the ones who refuse to allow firearms education in the schools “because that’s just the NRA indoctrinating a captive audience of kids to become future gun buyers.” Sheesh.

      • Look both ways before crossing the street.

        Eat your veggies.

        Don’t point guns at people.

        Class dismissed.

We have a course for everything except common sense.

  2. mind-boggling how ALL of these things manage to go wrong at once:

    1) kids don’t know how to safely handle guns
    2) kids get ahold of guns that are not their own
    3) kids decide to “play” with a real gun
    4) kids don’t check if the gun is loaded before “playing”. HOW COME THEY NEVER CHECK????
    5) kids point the gun at another kid (at a vital organ)
    6) kids, while pointing the gun at another kid, have their finger on the goddamn trigger
    7) kids pull the trigger while pointing the gun at another kid

So at least 7 conditions. And people still insist on using that word “accidental” every time.

    • Yep and people are too scared to even try to educate themselves. “I thought all guns had a safety”. How many times has that been said and people still don’t get that your index finger is one safety and your head is another. Don’t let the booger hook touch the bang switch.

    • This “kid” is actually a 19 year old adult in possession of a STOLEN firearm. Condolences to the victim’s family for their loss.

  3. How did it “accidentally” go off? You mean he “accidentally” pulled the trigger?

The greatest safety for your kids is “education.” This includes safe gun operation if you are going to leave guns laying around.

  4. The poor little boy who had the gun go off in his hand is an indicted adult who had just robbed a woman at gunpoint a few days earlier, a few blocks away.

Sharper was also indicted and arraigned in a separate case on charges of armed robbery, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. On Dec. 22, it is alleged that Sharper robbed a woman at gunpoint taking her cash and personal property while she was in the driveway of her home located on Virginia Park.

I question how much of an “accident” this was. Perhaps he was boasting of how he’d stuck his stolen gun in the face of the poor woman, and in his predatory glee he squeezed the trigger.

Or the 16-year-old was threatening to tell the police.

    • Wow. This whole “poor little boy” thing is getting out of hand. Meriam-Webster is going to have to reassess those definitions soon due to popular usage I imagine.

  5. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?

Too bad for the dead kid. I’m sure he had a great career ahead of him doing precisely what the shooter did for a living — armed robbery.

  6. Pulling the trigger while pointing a firearm at a friend’s head is not an accident anymore than punching him in the face would be.

An accidential shooting is when you own a firearm that isn’t drop safe and it goes tumbling down a flight of stairs while you’re going to get in your car and someone gets hit.

See, one of those was an accident. The person posessing the firearm did not actively make the decision to aim the firearm at someone and pull the trigger. The sad part is that the second one would be more likely to end in an arrest these days.

Next time someone gets on my nerves, I’m gonna say it was an accident when the cops come.

    • “Next time someone gets on my nerves, I’m gonna say it was an accident when the cops come.”

Pray the prosecution doesn’t find that comment in TTAG if you are involved in a shooting…

  7. I believe that every kid should be involved in scouting…. Even with an absent parent,Scouting provides some pretty solid skills and builds Character in in boys.. One of those skills is gun safety..that is, Unless the liberals have gutted that too.

  8. Yeah, sounds more like a shooting than a negligent discharge to me; just sayin’.

    I really wish they’d call a spade a spade.

    • “Just read the article; it’s damned hard to accidentally fire a revolver.”

A revolver with the hammer cocked with a light trigger is easy to fire…

  9. Guns don’t accidentally “go off” when an idiot plays with one. Kid has his finger in the guard pointed at another person, that’s no accident.

  10. None of this is even possible, must be a hoax. Look, we have LAWS! Laws which do not allow boys these ages to possess a handgun, therefore it did not happen. Unless, perhaps, such laws are useless eyewash.

  11. They will only learn when they are taught gun safety instead they are taught to abjectly and irrationally FEAR guns. The anti gun nuts should be held to account for these type of accidental shootings. We used to have gun safety taught in public school.
