What could possibly go wrong?

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Monday said that she will reintroduce legislation to increase the minimum age to buy assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in the wake of a shooting in California.

“It’s common sense to prevent the sale of deadly assault weapons to individuals who aren’t even allowed to buy a beer. This isn’t a fix-all bill, but it closes a gaping loophole in federal gun safety laws, and I hope the Senate will act on it swiftly,” Feinstein said in a statement.

Feinstein added that “if you’re too young to purchase a handgun, you shouldn’t be able to buy an assault rifle.”

    • The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

    • Looking at what has happened to this country over the last hundred years, the 19th amendment seems to have been a pretty serious mistake. Men don’t elect politicians like Feinstein.

      • lol get real. Might as well say “men don’t make mistakes”. Could not be more of a blanket statement about politics.

      • 538 (among others) have crunched the numbers.
        https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-if-only-men-voted-only-women-only-nonwhite-voters/
Even more interesting is looking at demographic voting patterns throughout time.

It amazing how classical liberal values (as in the original Constitution) exist in a paradox. They typically arise when an minority revolts against a tyrant, but then are destroyed when expanding the franchise inevitably leads to the end of the republic. Plato observed this over 2400 years ago and the cycle still continues.

        • CLarson,

Perhaps you have heard the principle that the problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money. (And then the nation descends into turmoil, chaos, and eventually collapse.)

I advance a strikingly similar principle to nations that initially form and structure themselves on classic liberty and responsibility: the problem with Progressivism is that eventually your nation runs out of rational and responsible people.

When there are too few rational and responsible people running families, communities, corporations, and government, the nation descends into turmoil — quite like we are beginning to see in our nation.

        • I agree, but if we tried to define who the rational and responsible people are we would probably start arguing. 😛

        • Read, “Why Liberalism Failed” by Patrick J. Deneen

While I disagree with its thesis the book does a great job pointing out the weaknesses and inconsistencies of liberalism. Specifically classical liberalism and its advancement (descent?) into Progressivism will result in the liberalism undercutting itself if several issues aren’t addressed properly. This last bit is my observation, as the author is much more doom and gloom about liberalism being unsustainable, but I merely view it as a matter of properly addressing several issues and setting reasonable cultural boundaries/norms.

Anyway, the basic premise is that liberalism eventually erodes away itself by its constant universalism and toppling of boundaries. Eventually, the principals, norms, and values which allowed for the establishment of a liberal political order are destroyed, as is the nation.

  1. ‘It’s common sense to prevent the sale of deadly assault weapons to individuals who aren’t even allowed to buy a beer.’

The answer to this dilemma is to lower the drinking age not to strip American adults of their right to keep and bear arms. For all the talk of us being the only industrialized nation that doesn’t do this of have that, no other nation, industrialized of not has a 21 year old drinking age.

    • And since they want us to be as enlightened as the Europeans, let’s emulate Germany’s age limit for beer and wine purchase which is 16 years.

      • That is how to ‘cage’ the argument.

If they insist on granting adult rights (and voting is a *very* adult right) to 16 year-olds, insist on *all* rights, including gun rights and carry rights for 16 year-olds.

Same with felon voting rights, if felons should be allowed to vote, they should have their full gun rights as well. And the same for all ‘adult’ rights, 16 year-olds should be able to buy hard alcohol, as well.

After all, it’s only ‘fair’, and Leftists are all about being ‘fair’…

        • And any 16 year old or older should be prosecuted as an adult for crimes they may have committed, and if convicted, imprisoned accordingly.

        • Leftists don’t hold themselves to the standard of intellectual consistency, because the issue is never the issue.

Making the voting age 16, in this time and place, will give them more power so that’s what they want.

Taking firearms out of the hands of more citizens gives them more power so that’s what they want.

This being the case, arguments about intellectual consistency roll right off them.

      • Was in Germany for 4 years.

16 year olds there are as mature as 24 year old Americans. They drive better too.

        • Also, you can get a beer at McDonalds… pretty cool right? Not as cool as their burger with egg (are you hungry now?)

    • Japan is almost as high at 20, but yes we must end the extortion on states that forces them to set the drinking age at 21.

      • Die for your country at 18, even sign up on delayed entry well before then, but can’t get a beer… Sad.

    • I sure wish they would stop using the catch phrase “common sense” when arguing for the nonsensical bans on “assault weapons” and standard capacity magazines, or age limits, “training,” permits, licensing, or government-issued permission slips.

Actual common sense applies only to the things that actually work to accomplish a given goal. If these things can be proven to stop the murders, then it’s common sense. Otherwise, it’s just wishful thinking.

        • No such thing as common sense. For it to be common, humans would have to be sensible to begin with. We have thousands of years of evolution ahead of us (assuming we last that long) before we have anything in common with being sensible.

        • Patron49IFT,

Common sense as we know, is not that common.

          I resemble that remark!

    • Split the difference and have the ages of voting, drinking, and owning firearms to be 18.

Works in my part of the world.

    • Don’t forget that the U.S. has a drinking age pegged at 21 thanks to Ronald Reagan, who tied federal funds for highways to a state’s drinking age — any state that wanted to keep getting federal funds for highways had to raise their limit.

        • In Russia a fifth of vodka comes with a pop cap like a 12oz beer.

      • The federal government doesn’t have the constitutional authority to regulate such things as the drinking age, but there’s always an end run around the Constitution if you have the political will to make it happen.

        • There is nothing that stops a State from setting the drinking age at 18. They just lose 10% of their federal highway dollars if they do.

        • no no, they get a 10% cut of their federal highway funding that year and an additional 10 % EVERY YEAR they continue to have an age less than 21

    • Assault weapons are already illegal. Quit buying into the verbiage that gets put out by democrats. Assault weapons or fully automatic rifles have been illegal to buy for a very long time by average citizens. Every semi automatic rifle works on the same principle of one pull on the trigger equals one round down range. It doesn’t matter if it looks scary or like a regular deer rifle it’s exactly the same.

  2. The sad thing is that the dems will win and both bills will pass. Who do we really have to thank for our left leaning country? The worthless, pandering, enabling republicans, that’s who !!!!

    • Well now, while the Republicans share some of the blame the Dems and liberal socialists share all of it.

Truth is every empire falls at one point, seems we are living through it now.

      • I can imagine a number of must pass bills or special projects to Trump that they would attach something like this to and then passing / him signing it.

I can not name one politician who was not a least worst option vote

    • The 26th Ammendment lowered voting age to 18. To go down to 16, you’d need 2/3 of each legislative body and 3/4 of the states (38). Not going to happen anytime soon. 26th passed because 18-year-olds could be drafted and die without having had any political representation. 16 year olds aren’t under any duress or have responsibilities placed upon them. A lot of states don’t consider them old enough to responsibly operate a motor vehicle or pick any sexual partner (statutory rape). It’s a naked grab to expand the Dem voting base.

  3. Well, opportunistically springing something she’s been sand bagging is hardly new behavior for DiFi.

Nor is using someone else’s pain for political gain.

    Two trick pony.

  4. In case you missed it; murdo supporters are now BEHEADING anti commie citizens. The future according to AOC et al?

      • Sorry, dicktatter in Venesula has thugs called colectivos doing this, kinda like ISIS. Get it now? So what if I don’t spell some sh.t birds name right? Read @Brietbart news.com.
        Become knowledgeable. Have a Joy-Joy day!`

  5. ….And allow Demo-Authoritarian politicians to “grant voting privileges to 🚫 ILLEGAL ALIENS 👽, imprisoned felons, pesos, gangmembers-MS13, and other prohibited persons” the ability to help cement the Demo-Authoritarian political party into perpetual power….Do the math PEOPLE…It’s white obvious by now who the REAL Fascist Tyrants are! Especially those who wise to “reinterpret” our Constitutional Bill of Rights by placing “limitations by government upon those rights…” THEIR own words…Like explanations spanning “So called Hate Speach, the 2nd Amendment, due process, RED FLAG (Heresay) Laws, etc….”

  6. An 18 year old with a rifle can potentially mess up everybody he sees.

An 18 year old with a ballot can mess up everybody in the country. Senator Feinstein is living proof of that.

  7. Well POT is gonna’ be legal in ILLinois. Get a pot card-you lose yer gunz. Brave New World playing out. Prickster surrounded by black folks yesterday😄😊😏Vote Dumbocrat dumbass!!!

    • If Illinois uses a card system then there will be no shortage of street dealers. If you really wanna smoke weed then use the ‘ol fashioned, well century old, way of getting it.

Besides a gun owner in Illinois… you’re practically a criminal already.

    • Unfortunately that’s very unlikely. Young and naive kids tend to believe the progressive indoctrination and would vote Dem en masse. That is the only reason leftists push for it.

      • The vast majority of the young in America are well indoctrinated, dedicated socialists who would vote for who ever runs as a socialist. Probably the farther left = more likely to win.

Demographics favor the left as they control education, the media, the courts and most all large cities. My prediction is they will take full control of America about 2024 and no later than 2030. When that happens the constitution will cease to be considered and gun confiscations will begin. So starts the next civil war.

        Be Prepared !

      • And at that age they are more likely to approve of, or even participate in, radical (final?) solutions to perceived problems.

      • Unlikely under the current educational system. But kids are impressionable and therefore a reflection of that system into which they are forced. They either rebel poorly or go along to get along.

On the upside though, lowering the voting age would mean than in 20 years or so all the OFWG’s complaining about “kids these days” would start to have a point because some of the kids in the system could vote to change it. As it is older people just complain about the outcomes of the very system they themselves created and actively prevent the participants from making better.

  8. “Buzzword Betty” is at it again,
    “Common sense” bla-bla-bla,
    “Deadly assault weapons” bla-bla
    “Loophole” blaaaaa!

IMHO, at 18 you’re an adult; vote, drink, smoke, be conscripted in the military, buy a firearm and be charged as an adult for crimes.( why the f**k can an 18yo but a rifle and shotgun but G*d damn!, Buying a pistol is the line for being trusted with responsibility?)

    • Along that thought line.

Back in 1968 with the GCA,it was considered alright to prohibit 18 to 21 year olds their 2 nd. amendment right to posses a hand gun as long as they could posses long arms.
So now the DemoCommies would strip anyone under the age of 21 their 2 nd. amendment rights, name one other right that is forbidden to a citizen until they reach the age of 21,that’s correct they all apply
      ,no matter the age.

Of course any age is a moot point as all arms laws are un Constitutional,as the Bill Of Rights are a prohibiter to government, with the end clause stating “Shall Not Be Infringed”.

      • Interesting how “it’s okay to take away X because they still have Y” becomes “they couldn’t be trusted with X, so they shouldn’t have Y either.”

      • The 26th Ammendment (18 voting age) wasn’t ratified until 1971, so it was normal to treat under 21 as second class citizens with partial rights in 1968. Many states also have them limited alcohol consumption rights (only beer or 3.2 beer).

  9. Term limits are way overdue ,,,
Too late for us now anyway,,,
You won’t recognize this country in 20 yrs ,,,,
Real America is lost to idiots & uneducated.

  10. Why not lower the voting age to the not yet born…..at least that will give the unborn a voice in whether they want to be executed or not.

  11. Another display of leftist “logic” and “common sense”. Why not register people to vote when they first enter school? Let people the age of those who commit suicide when a girl rejects them chose who would be president? That may sound crude, insensitive, and nuts but is a consideration. Gun at 21 and vote at 16 should be part of Republican campaigning. Gun control versus “post-birth abortion” should be, too.

  12. Obvious attempt to both curtail the right to defend oneself from government and increase the pool of easily fooled voters is obvious

  13. “It’s common sense to prevent the sale of deadly assault weapons to individuals who aren’t even allowed to buy a beer.”

So, is DiFi saying here that we need to buy beer along with assault weapons? I’m a big fan of both, but not at the same time.

    • She’s so dumb she became a personal joke of mine.

Pretty far off topic here, but her general stupidity actually caused me to use the term “DiFi” in a script that looks for problems in my wifi network. When it finds certain things it generates an error report and one of the key variables in how it displays the errors is $DiFi.

So, when there are errors, in the back of my head I know DiFi is present, which is hilarious to me because when DiFi shows up something is always wrong which is also true in real life which makes me laugh even harder because that means that based on the specific way I did things ($Difi -eq $False) is always valid in both real life and the way I’ve written that bit of script.

  14. If one reads between the lines, the DNC is in full panic mode behind closed doors.

Look at the trend you’re seeing:

    – First they tried to import vast numbers of non-Americans, give them free crap in return for votes.
    – Turns out that legal immigrants are some of the most zealous supporters of measures against illegal aliens, including and especially being against giving illegals voting rights.
    – Next, the DNC wanted to give past felons their voting rights back en masse.
    – But Trump’s work in sentencing reform suddenly changed who they might vote for.
    – So now come the calls for lowering the voting age to 16. Turns out that most voters, knowing quite a bit about 16-year-olds, know that this is a Very Bad Idea.

Observe tho, that when these are put together, they form a trend: the DNC is scrambling for votes. The DNC perceives that they cannot win elections easily any more.

The populist waves of voters (not just in the US) have bitterly disappointed our elitist masters, and now they’re trying to shore up their political base. This isn’t a US-only issue. The US, UK (BRexit was never supposed to be even close), the French “Yellow Jacket” protestors, elections in Hungary, Italy, Austria at a national level, state elections in Germany, etc, etc. What you’re seeing in the western secular democracies is a very rapid dissolution of the post-WWII world order. The Geo. HW Bush “New World Order” BS is rapidly collapsing around their ears, and they cannot understand what happened.

So, rather than observe the signals and make substantive changes to remain in favor, the elites have decided they will try to prop up their schemes by enlarging the voter base to large populations of people who aren’t thinking very clearly or who don’t really understand the system at all: criminals, immigrants from primitive societies and children with little to no impulse control.

Keep your powder dry, brothers. Things are gonna get bumpy.

    • Valid points. I’ve been laughing at this for a while. As I said the other day, the system they’ve created is in any ways self-correcting.

Still, watching it implode gives one pause since what we’re seeing now is the struggle. The final collapse will likely be rather spectacular and God only knows what the outcome of that will be.

  15. If you can die for your country at 18, then there should be no restrictions on anything else that you can do.

    • That has more to do with the screwed up private heath care system in the US than any kind of politics.

    • The 26 thing came about under the ACA because kids graduating college and losing their insurance (colleges at the time offered a slew of insurance options but they ended at the beginning of the next semester after graduation) but not being able to get new insurance due to an inability to find a job was a problem.

    • Allowing 26 year olds on their parents insurance raised rates even more. Another non solution solution.

  16. And if a generation of majority conservative kids appears, the democrats will want to raise the voting age to 35.

  17. why are we holding back
lets call them what the are
the party that wants to take all our guns
and kill babies after theyre born
and ban the death penalty for cop killers
    and let terrorists vote
    and open borders
    and sanctuary states
    and the welfare state
and on and on and on
there isnt a single they do that benefits america

  18. I’m tired of this “child wisdom” and “children are the future” crap. Children and the never ending need to care for them and the time it takes to bring them up to speed essentially retards civilization. Humanity is constantly spinning its tires wasting time humoring children and their new-to-them ideas. This includes the kindergartners putting smiles on drawing of the sun, the teenagers questioning authority and the AOCs with their “true socialism” bullshit.

Newsflash, every last idea you’ve ever had has been done before and there’s very likely a practical reason why your “new” scheme is not in place here and now so quit wasting yours and everybody else’s time trying to drag old, failed ideas out of their graves. Wanting to move forward and be progressive should not involve bringing dead ideologies that failed 60+ years ago back to life.

  19. Okie dokie I will go for that if you bring back the draft and lower eligible drafties to age 16. “But but little Johnny’s not ready for War yet”

  20. And these same people will say children as young as 12 years old are old enough to give their own informed consent for medical procedures that carry risk.

  21. 16 year olds don’t know shit! They don’t understand what its like to pay for a mortgage, healthcare, college and other financial responsibilities. HELL NO they should be allowed to vote.

      • In hindsight, and with the knowledge that ad valorem taxation was one of the few reliable sources of tax revenue from year to year, that restriction looks rather wise, doesn’t it?

        • Depends on the location. In a rural area it seems to make sense. Otherwise not so much. Think of NYC or LA or San Francisco. Who owns all the shit in those cities? Wealthy liberals.

Cali, Illinois and NY already have problems. Problems that would only be made worse if people like Bloomberg and Zuckerberg got even more power by disenfranchising most of the public. I mean New Yorkers already complain about the outsized power of the City and all such a rule would do is further concentrate power in an even smaller group of people and make it even more likely that things go to shit because they’ll abuse eminent domain to take your property and your ability to vote in a single swipe.

This is simply a recipe for yet another landholding arostacracy.

The “human condition” boils down to that there are no great solutions to things like this. There are only bad and less worse solutions.

  22. What the dems are doing is as plain as the nose on my face. They are trying to make this country into a one party country with themselves in charge. They want felons to vote knowing that felons will vote overwhelmingly vote for them. (Professional courtesy, one criminal to another)They want 16 year old’s to vote for the same reason. At 16 the average person is still in high school and has no practical real world experience. They haven’t had a full time job, never served in the military, and haven’t been able to figure out yet what their leftist teachers have told them is a bunch of crap. Naturally they’ll vote Democrat.

  23. Before the law was changed a 16 year old could walk into a gun store and buy a long gun with their their own money no questions asked. Or maybe with a note written by their parents.
An 18 year old could buy beer. Then it was raised to age 21. But Libertarians Liberals and the Left condone pot smoking for children. The Twisted logic of the three L’s.

They also want to lower the age of sexual consent. 14? or 12? or lower still?

  24. “Party That Wants to Raise Age to Buy Guns to 21 Would Lower Age to Vote to 16”

That because they know they can “lure” (like a pedophile) the young voters with free this, that, and the other…
