Welcome to the Out & About Workday Carry from Everyday Carry.

Matt K, a clinical scientist from Virginia submits this big pile of stuff. In addition to the well-stickered laptop, he has all the fundamentals. Gun? Check. Blade? Check. Light? Check. Reload? Check.

The Eternalight threw me for a loop though. Different, to say the least. They must be durable, because Matt writes of his litmus test for the stuff he carries:

I make it a policy only carry something if it can survive being run over. Everything here has survived a couple years of radiation, bangs, water, and drops and has kept on ticking.

He no doubt carries some firepower. That HK Mk 23 throws out 12+1 rounds of persuasion of the .45 ACP variety. That’s a lot of gun to carry all day every day.

And the lucky coin stands as a nice touch, too.

    • It does kinda look that way, doesn’t it?

If it is, it’s damn stupid. Every time he touches it, a bit mercury or mercuric oxide is now on his fingers.

And since people pick their noses and pick up some foods to eat, he’s ingesting mercury.

And mercury is a *nasty* neurotoxin. That’s a good way to get cumulative ‘dain bramage’…

        • Dain Brammage is from an old Robin William’s skirt about Chuck Wepner ….. I think….some boxer.

        • “Been around a lot of mercury, have you?”

Pardon me for a moment, I need to wipe the drool off my chin.

It seems to do that a lot… 😉

        • Bill Cosby used it in his 1982 album “Himself”. Not sure that was the first time it was said to an audience but it sets date of first use back at least that far. Bob Nelson I think used it a few years later. Again not sure but I think Robin WIlliam did use it till the mid to late ’80s.

      • Only problem with that pistol is that the tac barrel will wear a hole in your pants with that IWB holster if it’s past 3:30 on your waist. And then the barrel pokes out when you sit down. Dark pants and no one will notice it but you’ve still got a hole in your pants.

HK thread protectors have a bit of an edge on them. Takes a bit longer on jeans but in six months or so there’s gonna be a hole.

Of course that’s all completely theoretical and academic. I read it in a book or online or maybe just invented that idea in my own head. In reality I’ve only seen an HK pistol in video games and have never actually left my parent’s basement. Mom won’t even let me have a Swiss Army Knife.

        • Doesn’t seem to me like IWB is the best type of holster for such a gun. It’d be odd to buy such a gun if thorough concealment was a goal. I often contemplate that it might have been a more effective option than my .357 revolver and not much bigger or heavier.

        • A Mk 23 or USP is concealable with a IWB holster. I’ve done it for years (in my head when I escape the basement).

Just don’t do it with a tac barrel on the gun unless you can find someone who will make the kydex portion of that holster cover the barrel tip. If that tip sticks out and it’s an IWB other than AIWB it’s going to fuck up your pants. Even older Duluth Firehose Pants are not immune.

  1. I’d be curious to see the bag that holds all the gear. I assume it’s not shown for opsec reasons, but then again those stickers do stick out. The the kydex mold at the front of the trigger guard must provide that most satisfying “clack” sound when reholstering. Looks like 3:00 or 4:30 carry? Overall a very realistic and nice loadout.

      • Thanks for sharing. My work addresses asymmetric threats to our warfighters and I have been focusing on C-UAS, not so much the cool and exciting part of engaging the sUAV’s with kinetic or non-kinetic kills, but the not-so-glamorous “detect, classify, track, control” parts of the kill chain.

        • I would hope they have high-powered microwave beams to fry their on-board electronics.

As for the detection and tracking part, would a powerful LIDAR be useful in creating a 3-D map of what’s airborne in the local environment?

        • Geoff PR, I don’t know much about LiDAR. It would seem that LiDAR would be an addition to other methods of detection, classification and tracking, such as EOIR sensors, Radar and frequency sensing. One of the challenges is “sensor fusion” to eliminate the false “tracks”. Currently, C-UAS is a lower priority for DoD than highr priorities like hypersonics, AI, Cyber security, Directed Energy, to name a few. The sad truth is, all it will take is one major drone incident, like a DJI Phantom dropping a grenade on a stadium crowd, to trigger more efforts to C-UAS.

  2. If you don’t fill an 80 pound ruck with your edc gear do you even carry bro?

    EDC packing list
    1. Gun – duh…
    2. 12 spare mags
    3. Body armor
    4. IFAK
    5. 6 tourniquets
    6. Flashlight – extra points if you can blind the space station with it.
    U. Shades – Always Be Cool
    8. Wet weather gear
    9. Spare undies

  3. I think it’s an unrealistic edc…but if I could own a mk.23(no thanks to NY), id practically shower with it. Show it off too? Definitely.

    • With such a nice gun, concealment seems a waste. However, I too almost always conceal no matter how nice the gun. Showering is where the less expensive guns come in, though I suppose that gun especially would be fine there:-)
