“Shannon Watts of Zionsville, Ind. [above] did not want her 12-year-old son to hear about the Sandy Hook massacre.” Bam! What else do you need to know about the founder of One Million Moms for Gun Control? Ms. Watts wants to shield her son from knowledge of evil in the world so she forms a lobby group to restrict (i.e. eliminate) Americans’ Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. I suppose the only other important facts about Ms. Watts are . . .

A) she’s from The Dark Side (PR) and B) the New York-based national media is eating out of her hand. CBS, USA Today, Forbes—they’re all over it. (Take that Gun Appreciation Day!)

The above lead comes courtesy of The New York Times, which pimps Watts’ product with all the subtlety of Huggy Bear, offering not one word of criticism.

“There was no focus group testing,” she said. “I came up with the name off the top of my head. I had a feeling that every other mom in America had a similar idea. I just happened to create the page that they found.”

Since then, she said, the group has applied to the Internal Revenue Service for nonprofit tax status and has set up more than 70 chapters. But she said she was determined to use social media to counter the influence of the National Rifle Association and its success in lobbying to loosen or eliminate gun regulations.

Seventy chapters? Really? Does the New York Times employ fact checkers? ‘Cause I’m thinking Ms. Watts makes chapters faster than McDonald’s make hamburgers (especially these days). You! You’re a chapter. You, over there! Yes you! You’re a chapter!

We shall see what percentage of one million moms supports Ms. Watts’ cause. silive.com reports that . . .

Ms. Watts has organized a march across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall at 9:35 a.m. to call on Congress to take New York’s lead and enact tough gun-control legislation . . .

Tony-nominated actress Montego Glover will sing “26 Names.” It’s written by Tony-winning composer Jason Robert Brown in tribute to the 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School first-graders and six school officials who died in the Newtwon shooting last month.

It would be easy to dismiss Ms. Watts’ cynical manipulation of women’s emotions for civilian disarmament. But the comely Hoosier gun grabber was made in a mainstream media test tube. Sadly, dangerously, her protest will get more coverage than larger pro-2A rallies. Her campaign will run and run.

Oh wait. Right. The Million Moms for Gun Control’s goals. Back to the Times . . .

The group issued a statement on Wednesday applauding President Obama’s proposals to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and to widen background checks for gun buyers. The One Million Moms group also called for regulating and tracking ammunition and for limiting state concealed-weapons laws.

Ms. Watts, in a telephone interview, praised the gun control bill that the New York Legislature approved and that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law on Tuesday. The measure expanded the existing ban on assault weapons and limited magazine clips to 7 rounds of ammunition instead of 10.

She suggested that New York’s success in passing a gun-control bill should serve as an example for Congress. “The fact that Governor Cuomo was able to find common sense and common ground with a Republican-led State Senate shows it can be done,” she said.

The sooner someone starts One Million Moms for Armed Self-Defense the better. (Sorry; One Million Single Parents for Armed Self-Defense won’t cut it.)

  6. I’m guessing that if you sign up for her newsletter and are in a city that doesn’t already have representation on the membership rolls, you become a “new chapter.” She’s in Zionsville, IN, so when a lady in Atlanta signs up, now “we have a chapter in Atlanta.” Whatever.

    I saw virtually zero media coverage of the capital assemblies and “Gun Appreciation Day,” except for that which appeared on pro-gun websites and in the latter case, when it was sneering coverage. Anyone else?

    The media and its one sided view will be the demise of this country. The country will soon be further divided. When only one side is given focus, the result is never the best outcome. It would be better if they use ABC-D, NBC-D with the D meaning the party affiliation they are pumping for so at least they are honest and they can stop making believe they offer fair and balanced reporting.

    At the same time, the gun rights folks have a lot of silo’s but no united movement. We are too slow to act and give focus to our cause — we only make the fight harder for ourselves. The only thing we have going is I believe we have stronger resolve and the sub/urban moms will soon find a new squirell to chase.

    • That’s one of the great things about the English language – adaptability and new words. But yeah, that one annoys me too.

      According to the dictionaries using lede to replace lead has been around about 60 years. It has become widespread enough to be “commonly accepted”. But it is not fabricated from whole cloth – lede as a word is 1500’s English.

    The years 1910-1920 were um interesting times: the Federal Reserve was created, Federal Income Tax act/bill passed, USSR established, WW1, Spanish Flu epidemic, and the 19th Amendment passed. I think that era was the time when America began swallowing toxic medications.

In responding, please cite the provision of the Consitution that supports your position, and address the provisions of Article 1, Section 8 pertaining to the power of Congres to raise and support Armies and provide and maintain a Navy.

      • While I disagree with Mike on his “we shouldn’t have any scary looking weapons” view, he’s 100% correct about the Constitution forbidding a standing army without explicit Congressional approval. I’m about to run out the door right now so I don’t have time to dig through the Constitution, but I’ve read it several times and it is in there.

        Also, part of the reason for the Second Amendment was that the Founding Fathers knew a standing army could (and would) be used against the people to oppress them. We see this now when so many are afraid to truly voice their opinion because of the 1.5 million soldiers that will gladly execute anyone the government tells them to.

  14. I understand where people like this are coming from, I really do. In THEIR world everything is discussed, thought about, and studied from every angle. It is unfathomable to them that sometimes the only solution is to act quickly and violently. Because they can not understand this they feel that everyone should be bound by their limited world view. Take off the rose colored glasses lady. Not everyone exists in your carefully constructed lifestyle of pta meetings and JCrew catalogs.

    I posted on their “Wall” a polite and sincere invitation to anyone who is part of the March, if they are in the NY area, to meet me at my local range and show them how to shoot, and explain how the new laws are overly constricting and ineffectual.
    I also reponded to another post about MLK, and I chimed in (again, politely) that Dr. King was denied a CCW because at the time the issuance was highly arbitrary and discretionary in his area.
    Both posts deleted within about five minutes, and I’m unable to respond to anything else on their page…

  20. Funny that she won’t tell her 12 yr old about this stuff. My 7 yr old daughter saw the news reports with me about this tragedy and commented that there are evil people in this world and we have to watch out for them so that’s why daddy has a gun. See, now my daughter is not looking to run out and slaughter anyone, she is not having nightmares, and she is not too young to know that a$$hats exist. No, she understands that $hit happens and men with guns need to respond to other evil men with guns. oh, and she knows how to field strip and clean a Glock, too.

    • The difference is you are a responsible parent and she believes that if her children know anything about violence it will never happen to them. She could not be any more wrong about that. ignorance does not make something safer.

    • Kids find out about evil stuff. I can tell you that my kids feel much more secure with their new armed security officer at their private school. Beats trying to decide whether to hide in the closet or run into the woods when the shooting starts, which were their previous choices. Dad feels a lot better too.

    I am not squeamish when it concerns these matters, and I do not have morbid fascination with cadaver. I am simply stating that evidence of the act is missing, and if the act is used to manipulate laws then evidence had better be presented.

    If evidence is being withheld for moral ‘Xianist’ reasons then belief in such matters is consistent with an illogical unsound mentality.

    I have witnessed proof of a recent New Black Panther membership ran radio broadcast that entertained a caller who espoused a desire to throw a hand grenade into a school classroom that would by his design be populated with White children. This was not the only statement entertained on the radio broadcast that embodied racially motivated violent sentiments towards Whites/Pink Demons/White Devil et al.

    However given the official statements by the coroner and non-corroborated eye witness statements disclosed to and carried by the press doubt is sure in my mind as to the accuracy of claims and the validity of narrative. For instance the claim regarding weapons used by Lanza (handgun caliber versus the long rifles .223 projectile). Furthermore the claims made regarding the scale of the damage and destruction of life confined to a singular room in one of the instances regarding Sandy Hook Elementary School, carnage to a classroom could very easily be made solely by and create wounds consistent with an explosive fragmenting device later to be interpreted as individual yet multiple shot wounds..

  29. My next door neighbors are very nice people. Dad is an emergency room doctor. Mom is a college English professor. We’ll call her Jane. They have twin boys. When they were around 2, Jane explained to my wife and me that she would never allow her boys to go near guns. Even toy guns. She doesn’t believe in violence.
    Fast forward a couple years. The twins are around 8. One of my son’s mentions the collection of Nerf guns sitting on a shelf in my basement to them. Next thing I know they’re at the door asking if they can see them. To make a long story short, within 15 minutes there’s a full scale Nerf war going on in my back yard. Even their little sister joined in. They ‘borrowed’ the Nerf’s for the summer. Jane never mentioned it.
    Last summer I saw them getting out of their minivan with their father. They were all carrying what were obviously gun cases. I asked them where they had been. Their answer: “Our dad bought us shotguns. We were skeet shooting.”
    Mom never had a chance.

    I am a mother and grandmother and will protect my family with every gun I own.
    She does not speak for me and I know other that feels the same as I do. So, witless you need to stop speaking for the rest of us. When the time comes, maybe the mothers for NO gun control will protect you and yours against the riots and murders.

  34. While saving the life of “even one child” is laudable, I wonder how many of the 56 million humans murdered by their governments in the last century were children. I’m sure the parents of countless children killed couldn’t, in their wildest imagination, foresee that the world would go so crazy that their own government would commit genocide against their own countery, never mind their own family.

    So it would seem rather short-sighted to throw out all means of reasonably defending yourself against a powerful government equipped with deadly weapons for the sake of saving a statistically small number of children. Was the loss of those precious children tragic? Yes. But check the facts not your feelings. Liberty and the lives of multitudes trump saving the propagandist’s jingoistic, “even one child”. I’m sure EVERY parent of the children in Germany, Cambodia, Russia and Turkey (to name a few) would have wished they had the means of battling the governments that had confiscated their defenses prior to committing genocide.

    Could that happen in America today? I don’t know. I pray not. But the founders provided that defense because they knew the heart of man was capable of great evil.

  36. I wish this misguided woman would focus on something more important than removing gun rights.
    Something like demanding to see the toxicology reports from the mass shooters, and a list of medications they were prescribed.
    We all know that the FDA would never permit the drug companies to dispense any medication that would be harmful to people, or not be thoroughly tested.
    The kid is probably on 3 or 4 medications right now.

  37. Wow ! An enterprising broadie figured out how to start a job for herself. As soon as shes gets tax free status, she’ll fire out requests for donations to “keep up her good work” (and buy her car and buy her clothes and buy her food and get her some TV face time and pay her rent etc.).
    She won’t be able to ride the tax free horse as well as say, Jesse Jack$on because she is white, but I bet her goal is something like that. Like getting paid for the usse of part of your domicile for tax free purposes. (Like the Clintons little place for the Secret Service that somehow charges the Government the same amount as their house payment)
    She is on her way to tax free heaven while being a social force for “good”. Horsefeathers !

I have posted the following several times on different sites because I feel it is the most powerful argument that can be presented to our members of congress and other public officials at all levels. I have added one more paragraph to the emails or letters I send. Actually a letter sent by snail mail is more effective as many emails are just deleted by some staffer. Loads of envelopes piling up are hard to ignore. Feel free to cut and paste it into an email or preferably a snail mail letter. Send this to everyone you know and we CAN influence this debate.
    Sorry it is so long but I felt the meaning should be absolutely clear so that even Liberals could understand.

    Those who argue that the Second Amendment was written just for militias are completely blown out of the water by the following quote from Thomas Jefferson.

    James Madison is credited with the writing of the “Bill of Rights” and was pretty clear about the meaning on the Second Amendment.

    Here are a few others who help define the true meaning of the Second Amendment.     PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE NEXT QUOTE!

    Then there are politicians who insist in taking our Constitution out of context of time and original meaning. Once again, James Madison warned us against this.

    Second Amendment:
    “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to KEEP and BEAR arms, shall not be INFRINDGED.”
    Arms, in the context and time when our Constitution was written meant the usual arms carried by militia members, everyday citizens or light infantry in the Continental Army. Many of these arms were supplied by their owners for militia duty and were personal weapons initially used for hunting or home defense. They came in all types and calibers; from a 30 cal. squirrel rifle to a 75 cal. smooth bore musket, pistols and shotguns of all types, calibers and gauges. They also included a huge variety of other arms including: knives of every conceivable shape and size, bayonets and swords. Many early citizens also carried tomahawks.
    Attempts to control the type and or caliber of arms Americans’ can possess are absolutely against The Constitution and the Second Amendment as it was written and intended. By the supreme law of the land (The Constitution), an American citizen should be able to keep and bear any weapon now used individually by our light infantry soldiers.
    Larger weapons such as cannon and mortars that could not be carried by an individual soldier or required more than one person to operate were considered to be “ordinance” and were not defined as “arms”.
    Words have meanings! If those meanings are bastardized all becomes chaos.

    Definition of to KEEP: to hold or retain in one’s possession; hold as one’s own.
    Definition of to BEAR: to carry, transmit, transport, have a characteristic of and exhibit.
    Definition of INFRINGE: to “encroach” upon in a way that violates law or the rights of another.
    THIS IS THE WORD MOST FORGETEN……INFRINGE!!!!! Read the meaning!!!
    Definition of INFRINGE/ENCROACH…….. 1: to enter by “GRADUAL STEPS OR BY STEALTH” (MY BOLD) into the possessions or rights of another. 2: to advance beyond the usual or proper limits
    Why is this so hard to understand? The meanings of the words in the Second Amendment have not changed since the amendment was ratified.
    I am not aware of the Second Amendment being repealed or amended.
    In reference to arms control by the states; the Fourteenth Amendment Section .1. is crystal clear.
    Section. 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; (My emphasis) nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
    Many in politics from the legislative, administrative branches and or judges cite “precedent” as a justification for the violations of our rights as guaranteed in The Constitution of These United States of America. Precedent only describes what has been done and gotten away with, not if it was done in compliance with the supreme law of the land or in accordance with the oath of office to uphold The Constitution.
