“One of the city’s Common Council members says Walmart has reneged on an agreement it made last year when the council permitted it to sell guns and ammunition at its Ireland Road store,” southbendtribune.com reports. “Council member Oliver Davis, D-6th, sent a letter to Walmart’s attorney Wednesday because the retailer is selling tactical 12-gauge shotguns at the south-side store. Davis also said he’s heard complaints that display cases containing ammunition have not always been locked.” I’d love to hear the legal definition of a tactical shotgun (that doesn’t include the word “black” or “scary”). Obviously, there isn’t one. But wait! The Council didn’t just take scatterguns and ammo off Walmart’s menu. They also banned . . . wait for it . . .

Handguns! Sorry. You probably guessed that. It gets better/worse.

The council granted Walmart a special exception in June 2011 to sell firearms and ammunition on Ireland Road. One of the conditions on that exception is that the store won’t sell handguns or tactical weapons.

Davis wrote the letter on behalf of other council members as chairman of the Zoning and Annexation Committee. He asked a Walmart representative to appear at the council’s next meeting, which is Monday.

Any member of TTAG’s Armed Intelligentsia live in that area? I would kill to have a reporter there for that meeting. Not literally, of course. And a picture of all the other “tactical weapons” at ireland Road Walmart: baseball bats, kitchen knives, pens, glasses (can be broken and used as an edged weapon), etc.

Oh and any gun rights-oriented attendee might want to ask for an update on an incident in the Ireland Road Walmart that went down last February . . .

Police are searching for a woman who they believe wielded a pocket knife at a Wal-Mart worker when he tried stopping her for shoplifting Friday night, according to a police report.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Friday at the Ireland Road Wal-Mart. A loss prevention officer confronted the woman, who he believed was leaving with items she did not pay for.

The worker told police that the shoplifter took out a pocket knife saying, “I will cut you,” before running away, according to the police report.

So, Walmart’s extensive inventory of “tactical” pocket knives has to go too. Presumably.

  1. OMG What about the chainsaws and weed wackers in gardening supplies, hasn’t this man ever seen Friday the 13th!!!!!!!

    • Apparently not!! And what about all the butcher knives and knife sets they sell!!!! Guess they have never seen Halloween or heard about Michael Myers either!!!
The D after the name does explain it all!!!!

    • You’re worried about chainsaws and weed whackers when they sell nerve agents and other chemical weapons in the same department? It takes a lot of chutzpah to nonchalantly label that stuff “insecticide” and “weed killer”.

        • Within the last year a woman at a nearby Walmart attacked another woman with a bottle of bleach. Several people nearby were also injured and I am pretty sure a Hazmat team had to come in and clean up. Maybe we need to limit the bottle size of cleaning products or ban bottles with a “tactical” extra large EZ pour mouth

        • Exactly. What do you need an EZ pour spout on something like that for? It’s not strictly necessary for “legitimate” use. Just what are these companies trying to enable?

  2. Wally World also sells rat, insect, and lawn poisons that can be used for nefarious purposes. Equally as horrifying certain chemicals and goods sold there can be mixed together to do unspeakable things. Worst of all are the Wally World hot dogs filled with nitrates and their highly processed donuts in the grocery section. The city government is doing all businesses a favor in letting them have the privilege of opening a for-profit enterprise. We must now ban hardware stores, groceries, lawn care centers, and stores that sell kitchen supplies and equipment.

    • Same here.

I’ve seen one location sell AR types, but another apparently not. The one that sells the AR types apparently don’t sell air-soft, at least that I noticed. The one I didn’t see the AR types at sold the air-soft. Beyond that, and outside of air-soft and toys, neither one appeared to have a real sidearm. As to a third store in the same city, I don’t patronize it enough to know what it carries the other two don’t.

  3. That bunch of clowns in South Bend would absolutely freak out if they saw what is available in the Wal-Mart near my home. This store has $999.00 Colt model 6920s for sale. Before the Colts, the store had SigSauer M400s in stock.

    • The Wal-Mart in my town sells AR-type rifles (Sig, Colt, Remington…) but no handguns. Wal-Mart calls them “modern sporting rifles”. Of course, if you want a full selection of EEEVIL “tactical” rifles, shotguns, pistols, and whatever, you go our friendly local gun store. A huge selection is available, with zero waiting period and no NICS phone call if you have a CWL (concealed weapons license). Gotta love Idaho. And funny thing, our violent crime rate is extremely low, especially compared to gun-control paradises such as NYC and Chicago. Can’t figure it out.

      • I was told yesterday, 10-30-12 by a Wallmart employee that the only stores approved to sell handguns are in Alaska.

  4. The whole tactical thing is kind of weird. I wonder what would happen if you took two model 700s, put one in a black stock with rails and fiddly bits out the who-hah* and kept the other in the wooden stock, and then asked an anti-gunner which gun is an “assault weapon”. Its like saying a stock Honda Civic is a race car after you add a few aftermarket body mods.

*in other news, its almost impossible for people not to stare at you when you ask them how to spell “who-hah”. So… Yeah don’t be mad if its spelled wrong.

  5. The closest Walmart to me in MA won’t even sell targets, so I won’t buy any of their crap. Now the Walmarts in RI are a little better(no handguns) so I’m willing to take the extra time to shop there.

  6. We just had a loss prevention officer killed by a shoplifter in Margate, Florida. And of course the bozos climbed out of the wood work for it saying he bought the gun at a Wal Mart.

  7. “One of the conditions on that exception is that the store won’t sell handguns or tactical weapons.”

Walmart sells handguns? Reminds me of the time someone told me our local Walmart started selling Ar15 uppers. Turns out it was just Knoxx stocks and some other Blackhawk gear lol.

  8. He needs to grow a pair.

My local Wally World carries S&W AR-15s, Colt AR-15s, and SIG-556’s, not to mention those scary tactical shotties. No one complains here, but then again, 65% of our local residents own more than one gun.

    • Yeah, my local Wally world carries Colt & Sig ARs, as well as S&W, Colt, & Sig “tacticool .22s”. And of course the required tactical shotguns with pistol grips as well. I wish they sold handguns. That would be awesome. I bet their prices would beat my LGS…

  9. I kinda feel sorry for Wal-Mart. For each city they need to deal with a different local law, but same does not seem to apply to Dicks Sporting Goods. For example, in the same town there is a Dick’s and WalMart. WalMart must keep its ammo locked under the counter of its sporting goods section and unless you know to ask, you do not know its there. If you ask, they show you a computer screen from their main website and you can search online as to what they have available, make your selection and the employee gets you what you want and promptly closes the doors. Just down the street, we have Dick’s Sports – there ammo is just sitting on a counter for you to take. Drive 15min south to the next town, and all the Wal-Mart ammo is sitting behind the glass, just ask and they will get you what you want. 1hr north, another Wal-Mart in a different town and shot gun ammo and rifle ammo just sits on an open shelf. Hand-gun ammo is there, just behind glass. About 15min more north over in another town, no ammo is allowed. All in the same state. Dick’s for whatever reason, has ammo out on shelves in all its stores no matter the town.

Same for any gun store in the state, nobody has any ammo locked up anywhere.

Once again, the stupidity of the people we have in office. Bureaucratic busy bodies without a clue as to what they are doing. Businesses are crushed with stupid regulations.

    • I have three different Wal-Marts in my home area and they all have different set ups for selling ammunition, with the closest one to my house selling ammo behind a glass case. I asked one of the reps their why some of their stores had ammo locked up and others with it on their shelves. They told me that the policy is set by store (I’m guessing they meant the store manager). So it’s not the local laws that are causing problems but the store itself.

  10. My local Wally World *Maine* had 3 Colt AR’s, a Sig 556 and a .22 version as well… and a “Tactical” Mossberg 500.

And to think I live in one of the safest areas in the whole country. Maybe we’d be even safer if Walmart stopped carrying those :p

  11. I wouldnt be caught dead in a Wally world. First, theyre a bigger den of scum and villany than any cantina in Mos Isley. Remember that thing about avoiding stupid people doing stupid things? Walmart is the chic place to be dumb. They seem to attract the worst elements of society. Then theres a whole mess of reasons why you should spend your money somewhere else, to boot.

  12. While I am not a fan of silly arbitrary limits on the kind of guns that can be sold, I also can see that if the local Wal-Mart agreed to it, they should follow their agreement. It just might make the next town say no guns at Wal-Mart at all since this one didn’t honor its agreement.

  13. I’m still confused. Does any Wal-Mart sell handguns? I’ve never heard or seen them sell a single one.

Also, although I don’t with agree with sale ban; I am happy that they don’t use the stupid term Assault Weapon and call them a tactical weapon.

  14. No problem. Come on down and see our line of strategic firearms!

I’m curious as to how a city council can ban what congress cannot. If it can legally be sold in the country, then that should be the law everywhere.
