“As a nation, these tragedies have united us in shock and mourning,” John Kaish opines at cleveland.com, referencing the mass shooting at Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church, “yet the first talk of solutions tears us apart. No one among us is willing to put aside our rock-ribbed, preloaded position on guns in order to sit down and find the common ground for solutions.” Wait. What?

John Kasich is a Republican. The Governor of Ohio, no less. A public servant who swore an oath to uphold and defend the state’s constitution, which asserts that “The people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security.”

Not to mention the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against government infringement of citizens’ gun rights. A protection that the Supreme Court’s McDonald decision incorporated; ruling that it trumps all local and state laws.

So what “common ground” does Governor Kasich seek between those who support the Second Amendment as writ and those who would degrade and destroy Americans’ firearms freedom?

Now that would be telling. If Governor Kasich — a once and future candidate for President — actually said what firearms-related “compromises” he had in mind, it would scupper his political aspirations. And he knows it. So instead he trumpets his ability to get Black Lives Matter and the police to sing kumbaya (after cops shot and killed Tamir Rice), and finishes with this:

Our present dilemma with guns calls for a similar approach. That means bringing together reasonable people on both sides of the issue – and those in between – to sit down and find that perhaps elusive common ground that will finally provide a pathway to solutions. It means retaining our respect for Second Amendment rights while finding reasonable, common-sense and constitutional ways to reduce the terrible toll of violence.

Governor Kasich uses the term “common sense” to virtue signal the gun control crowd who’ve adopted that term to hide their actual agenda of civilian disarmament. Kasich uses the term “constitutional” to virtue signal to gun rights advocates whose beliefs I’ve outlined above.

Bottom line: Kasich wants to get elected President as “the great compromiser.” A deal maker, if you will. Nothing more, nothing less.

  1. Compromise is what you do when you’re losing. We’re winning. And we’ll continue to win. The more we win, the more support we’ll draw. Because Americans love winners and want to be apart of all that winning.

    • I cant take credit for pointing this out, because someone pointed it out many months ago in a previous “comments” section here at TTAG…. but, below are the two definitions of the word “compromise”…. gun grabbers want us to do definition #2 but want it to sound like definition #1.

      1.

settle a dispute by mutual concession.

“in the end we compromised and deferred the issue”

      synonyms:meet each other halfway, come to an understanding, make a deal, make concessions, find a happy medium, strike a balance;

      give and take

      “we compromised”

      2.

accept standards that are lower than is desirable.

“we were not prepared to compromise on safety”

      • What’s with the holier than thou hot air when the ads here are near pornographic and laden with malware?

Talking guns with all the ad filth just makes us look bad and supports the anti view we’re all nuts who cheat on our wives.

        • Odd…
The only ad I see on this site is for Spyderco knives…

Maybe it has something to do with you regular internet habits.

          I dunno….

        • I don’t want adds on my free site!

See: basic economics. Either that, or maybe you can find some folks to cover operating costs.

        • Sam, lol I see adverts for winter jackets and boots, which I was internet searching for the past few weeks. The ads you see are determined by your habits! could be a glitch of course, maybe you were not searching for something and the advertising cookie/algorytms think you would be interest — but in any case it has nothing to do with the website!

    • Gun-control ideology has been around long enough that its primary values—all of which reflect a desire for gun confiscation—are reduced to virtue-signalling symbolism. Listening to gun-controllers is like attending a bad magic show where everyone in the audience knows the secrets to the magician’s tricks. Been there, done that. Yawn.

  2. Why does the population at large have such a tolerance for these stances? Oh yeah, because most of us are drugged up and can’t freely or critically think.

  3. “Governor Kasich — a once and future candidate for President ”

Actually, no. He was never a candidate for President – the farthest he has gone was a candidate for the candidate. And even that was at the back of the pack.

  4. Isn’t he the traitor Clinton wrote a personal letter to thanking him for selling out American rights and letting him get the AWB passed?

    • Exactly.
I came to the comments section to say it’s not “surrender” for an anti-gun politician to demand that I compromise my rights to suit his whims.

Republican does not equal pro-gun, but Democrat does, with hardly any exceptions, mean anti-gun.
(and the so-called exceptions are always happy to toe the party line on anti gun court appointees and other backstabbing tricks)

  5. I live in Ohio and am not a happy camper. Typical polititian.

    COLUMBUS, Ohio
Gov. John Kasich said he will not recommend to Republicans in Congress which way they should vote on President Obama’s proposed assault weapon ban, even though he supported it nearly 20 years ago.

“My feeling is it wasn’t effective,” Kasich told 10TV this week. “You know in our state, I just gave $5 million more for planning for people who are potentially violent and have mental illness.”

  6. The further we get from the 2016 election, the more I appreciate President Trump. He’s nowhere near perfect but when viewed next to the alternatives, he’ll do.

    • i’m with you but unfortunately there are many, many, brainwashed mindless idiots who are clueless to what the left is trying to do to this country. The divide between us and them is just getting worse.

      • Besides that, as I have said many times before, you can’t fix everything and bad things will always happen. We already have about 24,000 Federal, State and Local gun laws already on the books, adding more laws is going to do what ?? NOTHING !!! but the lefties are too stupid to see what’s really happening.

        • The2nd Amendment does not restrict the citizen’s right to own and bear arms, however, it does restrict the government’s authority to infringing on that right, let us get back to the Constitution!!! The government has no rights when it comes to the 2nd Amendment, accordingly, all laws passed by the government at any level are unconstitutional. The premise for the 2nd amendment was/is to keep the government in check and allowing the government to control our 2nd Amendment rights is comparable to putting the fox in charge of the safety and security of the hen house. It is time for us to tell the socialist fascist leftist to take a long walk on a short dock.

  7. “That means bringing together reasonable people on both sides of the issue”
I have not been able to find reasonable people on the anti-gun side.

    • I did once.
But after explaining a few things to them, they changed their position an decided the Constitution was right after all… that’s what reasonable people do. 🤠

  8. I would be very surprised if Kasich’s “compromise” includes building more prisons and mental hospitals to keep the criminals and the crazies away from the rest of us.

  9. My “rock-ribbed, preloaded position on guns” is that the Second Amendment and its corollary in my state’s constitution both mean EXACTLY what they say.

Kasich’s position seems to be “let’s not respect the Constitution and say we did.” But then he is a politician, so it fits.

  10. Kay-sick you say? Isn’t he switching to the Dumbocrat party?!? Amazing he thinks he has a “say” ’cause he won his own state…

  11. We can talk, but the opposing side won’t like and/or listen what I have to say one bit and nether would you.

I’m not compromising. If I do it’s a helluva deal.

  12. Knew him in ’79-’81 in Ohio Young Republicans. He was conservative then. But he jumped off that boat decades ago. Anathema to me since 94.

  13. “As a nation, these tragedies have united us in shock and mourning,”

I can fix this for the governor.

As a nation, these tragedies have divided us between those who thirst for revenge, and those who understand that the shooter acted alone, and is dead.

The anti-civil rights bigots and the vile, lying, corrupt democrat party politicians use the intense emotional reaction to “these tragedies”, the lust for vengeance, to manipulate public opinion. They consistently and repeatedly offer “solutions” that they cheerfully admit will make no difference. They feel free to demonize those who insist on exercising their rights because, by and large, law abiding gun owners do not vote for them. They seek to punish the innocent for the crimes of their own supporters.

They clamor for “reasonable compromise” now, but will not stop until they have imposed total surrender.

  14. Breaking news: RINO Okie tells Texans their business like he knows better.

In related news: today is a day ending in “y”.

  15. “That means bringing together reasonable people on both sides of the issue…”

In other words, those with nothing to lose, and/or those that are uneducated on the topic, to include the Constitution.

We don’t need a test for voters. We need a test for those running for office.

  16. Solutions? I have some solutions for you.

    1) Get rid of gun free zones.
    2) Get rid of anti-carry laws both open and concealed. Both compliment one another.
    3) Training, training, training. Not mandatory training because government cannot be trusted. Blame them and the control freaks who run it who can’t help themselves but to make more rules and regulations.
    4) Promote gun safety in school.
    5) Let them know Hollywood and video games are not authorities on guns. They are F.O.S.
    6) Let them know the omnipotent law that police have no duty or obligation to protect you. They are not your personal bodyguards. They do not prevent any crimes, they just clean up the mess.
    7) Have the media stop promoting the killer dissuading copy cats. Let them be forgotten and not glorified.
    8) Bring back mental institutions.
    9) Stop having doctors give out these mind-altering pills like they are candy.

I know my solutions will fall on deaf ears but it is a start.

  17. When people get to a certain age, they mostly think about getting to heaven. Politicians should retire long before then, because they stop caring about their constituents, the law, or the constitution.

Kasich was a has been in early 2016 or before. His “campaign” seemed to be mostly a therapy tour.

  18. We’ve already done what Ohio just said. The problem is these people will never be satisfied. If we sit down again and compromise once again we will be giving up our rights until we have none left to give. These people act as if we haven’t already compromised on gun control and “common sense” gun laws. These people will never stop taking so we have to stop feeding them.

  19. Johnny:
Nope not now not ever. There is no way to compromise.
Only give in. More then we already have and enoughs enough already for me.
Enforce the 22-23k laws already on the books and leave me be.

  20. 10. Bring back lobotomies. They were very effective in preventing people from acting out their violent fantasies. Permanently effective, unlike meds. Most cases could be sent home in semi zombie state. Hospital in my city did hundreds of them back in the 50’s and early 60’s.

  21. If God is looking out for the United States, he’d strike dead, these filthy, subhuman, Liberal Terrorist™ sympathizers like Kasich.

  22. As AI becomes more advanced and new technologies become available to robotics there will be less need for the working middle class( in any country). When those people are no longer needed they become a burden to the government ( Illuminati), the people( worker bee ‘s) still need food medical and housing. What do you do with a tool, lap top, car, whatever that is now useless? I throw it away. Now comes the dissarm the worker bee part, the utopia ” they” seek cannot be accomplished with an armed populace. The ” powers that be” ,litmus test us all the time to see how far push comes to shove. It’s not only gun laws, little things like seatbelts, daylight savings, school referendums, building permits, trash disposal. The ” powers that be” use smoke screens like guns, racism, wars, politics, religion,to keep our minds away from the BIG PICTURE. We scream rights and depend on laws that protect and in the end” they” do whatever ” they” want. In the near future machines will meet the needs of a few, and the few won’t need you

  23. Is there any wonder why he went nowhere during the primaries for the ’16 presidential nomination? Not in my mind. Same thing strikes me over Johnson and his grabber RINO running mate Weld. “Vote differently, for more of the same junk.”

  24. Well, Hate to say it…But the Conspiracy theorists warned us all many years ago…They mentioned the term New World Order. Looks like they may have had a point…..

  25. They always talk about compromise but never say what they offer in return for their “common sense” changes. I guess it’s all take and no give.

  26. If compromise is both parties being unhappy with the solution, and the gun grabbers are unhappy as they obviously are, and the progun side is unhappy, as I know we are. Then I say we already have compromised.

  27. As other’s before me have said, this is no surprise to those of us who followed the 2016 presidential election. It came out that Kasich was a supporter of the AWB fairly quickly after he mounted his campaign.

  28. As we contemplate God in our spiritual journey, we also must ensure our self for the capacity to shoot back. Any use of the term “common sense” from the gun control crowd, who have adopted that term to hide their actual agenda of (complete) civilian disarmament, is a certificate on behalf of this BRAIN-FRIED MORONS that live mentally in LA-LA LAND,
that their own “common sense” doesn’t exist any longer.
They ask for “compromises” on behalf of legal gun owners.???
NOT ONE MORE… because they never keep their own part of ANY bargain.
Their “Compromises” are… take, take, take and SURRENDER, SURRENDER, SURRENDER.
I, for my part, have had more then enough of their so called “common sense”…
    Because it is UTTERLY NONSENSE.!!!

  29. I wonder how Kasich feels about the needed compromises on the fourth and fifth amendments. The UK, the rest of Europe, Australia and Canada all have lower rights and civil liberties in those areas. We obviously need some compromises to remove rights that let criminals off.

In Australia a police sargent can issue a warrant to have you home searched instead of requiring a judge. that is reasonable. after all what does anyone have to hide? sounds like if you don’t support some common sense reductions of those “rights” you are the problem and all for kids being killed if you don’t support some new compromises to lower those rights. Not to mention those rights were written by old dead guys 250 years ago when the world was different.

Maybe we can also remove double jeopardy prohibition and allow multiple attempts to get a finding of guilty after a finding of innocence, as is allowed in Australia and much of Europe. After all if you are not guilty what harm does this do to you?

  30. Anybody else notice, they talk loudest about “compromise” when we’re starting to get some “consensus?” We all start agreeing that making it a bit harder for whack jobs to shoot up churches and schools would be a good thing, and they go right to “Y’all gotta compromise, just a little, and just make all y’all’s guns shoot slower.”

It’s like it isn’t about winning, it’s about beating (down) us.

  31. He must’ve gotten (D) on him somewhere.

IF YOU LIVE IN A BLUE STATE, YOU MAY BE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

    IF YOU HAVE A (D) AFTER YOUR NAME, ARE A: LIBERAL / PROGRESSIVE / SOCIALIST / COMMUNIST / GLOBALIST / GLOBAL-WARMER / OR rino,

    THE PROBLEM IS
    PART
    OF
    YOU

AND YOUR MOTHER OWES US AN ABORTION.
