Now that Brady Campaign Prez Paul Helmke’s retired, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is the undisputed heavyweight king of America’s gun control movement. His is an empty kingdom. In June 2008, the Supreme Court struck down D.C.’s handgun ban. Two years later, they kiboshed Chicago’s ban. As legal hurdles to gun ownership and concealed carry continue to fall, sales are surging. Meanwhile, anti-gun initiatives—from high cap mag bans to micro-stamping—are dead in the water. By now, you can attribute gun control’s public support to little more than knee-jerk liberalism. Bloomberg, the head of the moribund Mayors Against Illegal Guns, has nowhere to go on the gun control issue and, increasingly, nothing to say. Even the media has grown weary of his bleating. To wit this, from nydailynews.com:

The mayor said 24 people shot in 24 hours in the city “is just unconscionable.”

“We cannot tolerate it,” Bloomberg said while speaking at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn. “There are just too many guns on the streets and we have to do something about it.”

New York has the toughest gun laws in the country, but Bloomberg said the city alone cannot stop the onslaught of shootings. “We need the federal government to step up,” he said.

Bloomberg is a co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and has lobbied Washington repeatedly to beef up gun laws.

The mayor called on all federal politicians, regardless of party, to get on the same page .

“Both ends of Pennsylvania Ave., both sides of the aisle,” he said. “We cannot continue to have these guns in the hands of kids who don’t understand the value of life.”

Overall, gun violence in the city is down 5.9% from last year. As of Aug. 28, 1,123 people had been shot in New York this year, according to the NYPD.

When the Mayor of New York City is reduced to blaming feds for his city’s gun violence, when the populist NY Daily News implies that Bloomberg’s BSing ’cause his cause can’t get it done, it’s one more indication that America’s move towards greater gun rights is gaining momentum.

When Illinois finally throws off the yoke of Cook County corruption long enough to allow citizens in The Land of Lincoln to carry a concealed firearm, it will be the end of the beginning. But the real battle continues . . .

You can debate that whole “more guns, less crime” thing until your blued gun fades to black. Crime is besides the point. The best way for Americans to defend and extend their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms is to keep and bear arms. Rhetoric is one thing. A gun is another. Just ask Mayor Bloomberg’s bodyguards.

  1. its funny every upstater just wants nyc to fall off into the ocean. i mean nyc is cool and a great place to visit, but everything thats wrong with this state can be traced back to the city and the liberal bs that goes on down there. mayor bloomberg is a douche for lack of a better term, him and his left wing pan handlers are driving good hard working people from this state. its really sad that so many wonderful weapons companys (bushmaster, Remington, Ka-bar, ect, ect) are here and have to deal with such a hostile gun climate

  2. Hizzonah da Mayuh can always find someone to blame. Blame the feds for violence on New York’s street. Blame the sky for the City’s failure to clean away the snow. Blame the women in his office for sexual harassment. Why do you think his nickname is “Mayor Blameberg.”

  3. Read the Daily news article my question what type of party is it and where are the parents when teenagers are shot at 3:40AM in the morning? If you read the article the 11 year was wounded at that party in the early morning?

Is it just me or would a 10pm til 6am curfew be a better idea? Then more federal LAWS.

  4. “Both ends of Pennsylvania Ave., both sides of the aisle,” he said. “We cannot continue to have these guns in the hands of kids who don’t understand the value of life.”

Since the kids and a good percentage of adults in his city do not understand the value of life, he wants to attack guns. The fact that it will effect millions of law abiding citizens does not matter to the elite. We are just peons to him.

Maybe he should be looking into his institutional learning facilities and the social programs of his city to figure out why the “kids who don’t understand the value of life.”

  5. I am shocked, I say again shocked, that there are illegal guns in New York! How could this be since it is against the law! How can this be? Mike, can you explain to me how this could happen in a place where guns are illegal?

A poor attempt at humor aside, where do these guns come from? I am sure that people get them the old fashion way, dirty cops, theft, black market dealers and from their drug suppliers but I think there is another way. Bloomberg has been setting up straw purchases from gun shows and dealers around the country for years. I believe he has been leaking some of them to the street to create an anti-gun environment to push for national gun control. The final history of F&F will show that idea came from Mayor Bloomberg. Robert has already found a domestic F&F component. F&F is cooperative effort by gun grabbers to discredit gun ownership by private citizens.

    • T you forgot to mention the BATFE. They so love to walk guns. Maybe Blameburg is on to something by blaming the government.

  6. Apparently 9 of the victims were at a parade in Brooklyn. According to NY Police Commissioner Ray Kelly “Quite frankly, this is something that does happen with this parade.” Hey! Maybe Bloomberg can start Mayors Against Parades!

  7. @ garynyer, “its really sad that so many wonderful weapons companys (bushmaster, Remington, Ka-bar, ect, ect) are here and have to deal with such a hostile gun climate.”

Yeah, so sad. So, so sad…. 🙁 Boo-hoo. You people have been lied to by a gun lobby that whines that any common sense regulation will lead to … what? A dictorship? The end of all freedoms? The inability of all those patriotic gun companies to sell to anyone and everyone?? B.S. What’s sad is how gullible you are. No not gullible, culpable. Inner cities are full of dumb***es. Minors, criminals, the mentally ill should not have easy access to guns, especially in a crowded city. Why the bleeping hell do you care what laws a city enacts to protect it’s citizens? Why aren’t you supporting reasonable controls to protect your own reputations?? Why can’t we be responsible about this, rather than rhetorical and reactionary?? I’m sure I’ll be bombarded by all the usual bankrupt talking points. Go for it. But it’s BS.
