The NRA’s embattled Executive Director Wayne LaPierre warned President Trump that promoting additional gun control would not go over well among his supporters. LaPierre, breaking from the NRA’s past tendency to maintain a low profile following news-making spree killings, reportedly made the comments in a phone call with President Trump Tuesday.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly told lawmakers and aides in private conversations that he is open to endorsing extensive background checks in the wake of two mass shootings, prompting a warning from the National Rifle Association and concerns among White House aides, according to lawmakers and administration officials.
It’s notable that President Trump has repeatedly said publicly that he supports “strong background checks” not necessarily the universal background checks that would end private gun sales in America.
Trump, speaking to reporters Wednesday before visiting Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, where weekend shootings left 31 dead, said there “was great appetite for background checks” amid an outcry over government inaction in the face of repeated mass shootings.
NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre spoke with Trump on Tuesday after the president expressed support for a background check bill and told him it would not be popular among Trump’s supporters, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss internal talks. LaPierre also argued against the bill’s merits, the officials said.
The NRA, which opposes the legislation sponsored by Sens. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., declined to comment.
Advisers to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he would not bring any gun-control legislation to the floor without widespread Republican support. Trump has waffled, current and past White House officials say, between wanting to do more and growing concerned that doing so could prompt a revolt from his political base. Even some supporters of the Manchin-Toomey bill, which would expand background checks to nearly all firearm sales, say it is unlikely to pass.
One can’t help but wonder if Democrats really want to pass meaningful gun control or if they prefer to politicize select tragedies for political gain going into an election year.
As for Republicans, despite the mainstream media’s narrative and fervent wishes, only a handful have gone wobbly on guns. Aside from Lindsey Graham, Illinois Congressman Adam Kinzinger has marked himself as one of the few turncoats on gun rights.
Kinzinger says he supports all manner of gun control now, including raising the minimum purchase age for all guns to 21, a ban on some magazines and banning private gun sales.
On a personal note, I look forward to assisting in Kinzinger’s retirement from Congress in the coming election season. Guns Save Life will no doubt be doing everything it can to help facilitate either a successful primary challenge on Kinzinger or his loss in the general election. After all, we can’t sit idly by as our so-called friends stab us in the back, promoting gun control after they were elected to oppose it.

This is a such a huge benefit to us. It’s unfortunate that he personally has little real 2A support, but I’d wager most of us knew that before the election. Him placing conservative judges abroad is also ironically shooting himself in the foot on his own gun control support. If we can get Trump a second term and keep the senate red, we’ll be sitting very high in the federal courts. That’ll be a huge thorn in the side of the next democrat president. If nothing else gets done in that time span, it doesn’t really even matter. If the goal is restricting government power and enhancing checks and balances, then a few more years of gridlock piled on a heavy conservative court lean is just what the country needs.

You are right. Last time I checked the 9th is amongst the top reversed Circuit Courts; the Supreme Court reversed around 79% of the cases from the Ninth Circuit from 2010 to 2015.

So called universal background checks is database creation, aka gun registration. It’s not the “active” type of gun registration, it’s a passive registration. Meaning, you are not forced to register all your gun or else, you are forced to register your guns whenever you transfer them to someone else.
Trump already “expanded” background checks when he happily signed the Fix NICS bill.
He did so in exchange for nothing. The plan was to tie it to HPA, but he gave it away instead. We could be debating whether or not to put cans back on the NFA now, instead of yet another inch or more to be taken from us.

The republicans get bashed a lot for being weak, but I’d like to point out that despite both Trump and a full on liberal assault on the 2A, there’s been no successful federal gun control and the vast majority of republican held states are very 2A friendly. If the GOP was being manipulated by Trump the way it’s often presented, there’d be a couple gun bills on the presidents desk by now. I’m just as disappointed as everyone that national carry or the HPA didn’t pass, but I think this proves that we need to all support at least keeping congress in GOP hands.

I’ve been wondering how and when WLP would be asked to chime in on these matters. I fully imagined the President would call NRA, and not the others and it appears I was correct. It sounds like Wayne represented me as I hoped. I still want a lot more transparency from NRA and it’s board, changes in the bylaws to reduce the Board’s numbers, and a detailed succession plan, but Wayne LaPierre just earned, without even asking or offering a trinket, a generous donation that will be forthcoming.
In the likely event these discussions are being monitored by administration insiders here’s a short, sweet message to pass on:
Remember President Trump’s base are his supporters, not politicians and we detest most of them (Mitch McConnell, Pat Toomey, and Joe Manchin are good examples*).
1) No Red Flag Laws without total adherence to the Constitution, particularly open Court due process BEFORE any other government action. Nobody likes the idea of surprise raids in the middle of the night as these can have disastrous, unintended consequences in strong Castle Doctrine states. The evidence strongly suggests such raids will not stop mass shootings even if constitutional red flag laws and quick reporting to the NICS system might help.
2) No “universal” background checks, as they will quickly become cumbersome and will prove Republican vote destroyers in the next election!
3) No “assault weapons” or semi-automatic bans or weasel wording NFA definitions to include semi-automatic weapons PERIOD as in the bump stock debacle. That can of worms will still probably come back to haunt us and at a minimum tarnish the President’s reputation at some point.
* And a special warning to the wise: Beware of the three politicians listed above, I live in their midst and they have never done anything for anyone, but themselves!

I think this is the part of politics a lot of people forget. Is that it’s not really about if he’s “your guy” or even a decent human being, but it’s about getting him to do what you want. All politicians can be swayed to our liking, some easier then others. Trump may not be a reliable 2A supporting president but he can unwittingly be the most pro gun president by being convinced to throw conservatives into high positions of power.

3) Further burdening legal gun owners.

If a new background check bill is introduced, read it carefully. Manchin-Toomey wasn’t a bad bill. It had lots of loopholes for trends, family, and coworkers. It also had a few other features beneficial to us.

He confirmed that he spoke with Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association about the issue and suggested that he could even oppose the organization on the issue of expanded background checks.
“We’ll see where the NRA will be but we have to have meaningful background checks,” he said.
Trump remained optimistic that the NRA would not oppose him on the issue.
“I think I could but I don’t think I’ll be there,” Trump said regarding the possibility of opposing the NRA.
He said that “in the end,” the National Rifle Association would either support his proposals for more background checks or even be “neutral” on the proposed legislation.

NRA is damaged. I hope they can fix their mess and listen to the members. Gut the bloated admin and really get to work. If not, I will donate to the SAF that personally helped my wife in Montana and the GOA, both of whom have been soldiers on the field of law with many wins. Trump is pushing very hard for gun registration (aka universal background checks) despite the NRA’s stance. He wants common sense background checks. He says he now has enough influence on the party to get more of his gun control passed. He wants age restrictions, red flag laws, universal background checks, etc. He said he talked to Wayne. He believes the NRA will eventually back him on gun control (and his reelection).
Reading over this thread has been fascinating! I’m seeing folks complaining about Trump and threatening to withhold support if he doesn’t give 100% support to our 2A demands. That implies that you either won’t vote for him, or you won’t vote, or you’ll throw your vote away on a 3rd party; essentially giving the presidency to the Democrats.
PUT YOUR PRIDE ASIDE AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS!
Every one of those 20+ Fruit Loops who want to be president have committed themselves to some degree of confiscation, national licensing, national registration, etc, with some even threatening Executive Action! And you KNOW they could do that!
So love him or hate him, he’s the only show in town when it comes to 2A support. In other words I don’t give a rat’s ass if you love Trump or hate him. Any gun owner who does NOT vote for him will deserve what happens to our rights under the Dems.
And if you REALLY want to lose some sleep, watch carefully what’s happening at the state level: More of them are turning Purple/Blue than are turning Red. And formerly reliable pro-gun states like Florida, Virginia and Texas are now struggling! Sadly, public opinion has turned against us – partly because of the bullshit and asinine arguments that have permeated this thread!
The Left’s long-term plan is REPEAL OF THE 2nd AMENDMENT, and part of their plan is being accomplished: Convincing the voters that we’re a bunch of self-centered assholes who care more about our guns than about human life! So much for Trump, the Gun Savior. Listening to various new outlets this morning, here come the bans. The idea that Trump was going to do ANYTHING for gun rights should now be finally put to rest.
Growing up in NYC, Trump has never been a big pro 2nd amendment guy. He banned bump stocks.
So the NRA can say whatever they want to him, and he’ll ignore them, because he knows that people who likes guns will likely still vote for him, over one of the democrats running who want the 2nd amendment in the garbage.
