Wayne La Pierre did a better job of discussing the NRA’s position on “Meet the Press” this morning and the follow-up with Sen. Chuck Schumer D-NY and Sen. Lindsey Graham R-SC was fairly balanced. Even the Panel discussion turned-up no severe anti-gun rhetoric. So, at least, one major News Program gave a semi-balanced presentation on the current issues. A little bit encouraging.
At the 9:57 mark when David Gregory displays a 30 round AR-15 magazine he actually broke a major Washington, DC gun law.

(b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. I wasn’t sure what DC laws were regarding mag cap limits but the same thought came to mind. I’m sure if he had been challenged on it the NBC dude would have thrown out a comment like “look how easy they are to get” or “it’s a prop and rendered non functional”

I wish he would’ve brought up statistics about how rarely rifles are used in murders (about half as much as hands/fists/feet). David Gregory kept saying “shouldn’t we try anything if it has a chance of working?”. Well we had an AWB for 10 years, and it didn’t work. Why not push that point?
Exactly, the Columbine shooting occurred in the midst of Clintons revered AWB.
Interestingly, by my accounting more of these type of spree shootings appear to have happened under Democratic rule (rule used intentionally) than Republican, the main exception being the Virginia Tech shooting that happened under Bush.
A more in depth study would be interesting to see if Democratic rule creates more of an enviroment for mass murder than Republican, although they are practicably the same party at this point.
They don’t care. The anti’s want them restricted anyway. They don’t think there are necessary or Citizens should own them. They have no concept of our mindset. An AR15 used once was all it took to decide something must be done. 20 dead children has cemented their resolve.

Here’s how you answer a question:
Mr. LaPierre, you wouldn’t support ANY new gun legislation.
No. Legislation works only on laws, and mass murderers break laws. Laws will not stop them. Next question.
Shouldn’t we ban high capacity magazines?
No. Criminals can and will still obtain standard capacity magazines illegally. Columbine occurred during the Assault Weapons Ban. Criminals are not concerned about laws.
Wouldn’t you concede that a magazine ban would save lives?
No I would not. Also, there is clearly a black market for guns and components. Any law to disarm the law abiding will tend to benefit criminals. Also, your holding of that 30 round magazine is in violation of law. Did the law stop you? I think not.
A better point to push is millions of gun owners including those who own AR-15 type rifles have not committed any crimes. If we further restrict guns to law abiding citizens will it stop those with criminal intent from committing crimes with guns? Anyone who is looking to commit a violent crime with a gun does not care if that gun is banned or not.
Gun control is about creating feel good laws that only impact law abiding citizens on a large scale. Those laws have little impact on crime. Limiting millions of Citizens rights for a statistically small amount of crime is a folly. What would be next under the guise of public safety?
Where would the line be drawn to balance the rights of millions against criminal intent? National speed limits set at 35mph and no cars capable of speeds over 45mph? No backyard pools? Ban cell phones because of texting and driving?
When will people who break laws be punished for their crimes instead of law abiding citizens having another right restricted because someone somewhere might do something horrible?
I actually thought Wayne did a decent job. Way better than I thought. I was also not completely offended by David Gregory. This type of interview could not happen on a CNN and never will.
Clearly there will have to be some give and take on both sides, but I would also love to see better mental health programs. Better NICs data and checks. Better criminal prosecutions. Better security at schools. All that makes sense and should be fairly easy to implement.
The key in all this is that gun control only takes the guns away from law abiding citizens. We all know you can buy anything you want at any time with the right connections and money. Criminals and nut jobs will not obey the laws and never will.
There are 310-350 million guns in the US. Very likely many came with a normal capacity magazines. In many cases two and three magazines. Add in all those made and sold as add-ons and that means there are likely 700 million magazines + in existence in the US alone. Worldwide it would have to be in the billions.
How in the world do you think you are going to keep every one of those in circulation away from a determined crazy person? It is not possible.
Maybe they should make a law saying crazy people shouldn’t have access to one of the 700 million plus magazines one the US.
Wait, we already have one. Lets make another that says if you’re crazy and ignore the first one that act of defiance is also illegal. It’s no wonder there are 20,000 something gun laws.
I think Gregory did a good job of documenting LaPierre is an extremist whose failure to even put the issue of gun control on the table is hypocritical and represents the view of a special interest group. Good for him.
LaPierre stayed on topic. He isn’t going to sit there and debate what to ban or why. You know folding stocks, flash hiders, 30 rounds, 10 rounds… It just isn’t an argument worth having at this point.

2. Consider professionals. The secret service is armed. Guards of armored vehicles are armed. The police are armed. I support the elimination of gun-free (victimization) schools.
3. The fact the NRA supports Republicans and Democrats is an indicator they are upholding the principle of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
4. People rightfully judged to be a danger to themself or others should not be in free society. Quit putting gun control restrictions on The People in the free society. Take the convicted bad people out of free society.
5. Last Thursday 12/20/2012, I called rep. Dold, but voice-mail was full. Left voice-mail for sen. Kirk. Sen. Durbin’s office was taking a poll on the gun bans.

While it is tempting, that if David Gregory had a banned gun magazine, that he would be prosecuted, found guilty by due process of law, and punished: I protest. Anyone who is allowed in free society should not have their 2nd Amendment rights oppressed by the government. A right denied to one can lead to the right denied for all.
On a related topic, this is why I oppose higher taxes on richer people. The governments are oppressing our property rights by much unneeded so-called services and research, spending, printing money, bailouts, debt, taxes, fees, legal bribes in the form of earmarks and political horse (H.S. like B.S.) trading. We need protection from the government. Do you believe those in government will stop if they tax those earning $250k or more? I don’t. Seems they want to make us all poor.
Apparently LaPierre thought appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press” would be like using a new dry cleaner, but all that resulted was steam. Listening closely as LaPierre dodged every question shot at him, he deftly ducked behind a stack of 50 year old copies of the National Review, the Women’s Wear Daily of the gun lobby.
No, like Pontius Pilates, LaPierre stood his ground while seated. He faced down the hard questions with the soft sell. In a nutshell, here is his three-point wide stance.
1) More drug dealers need to be sent to prison. An excellent point as we need more drugs in prison. It is, like prisons themselves, a growth market.
2) Violent movies such as “Natural Born Killers” are corrupting our youth. Yes, that 20th Anniversary DVD edition must have somehow tainted a VHS-less generation into mass slaughter. If only Oliver Stone had been stopped earlier by a more aggressively marketed Betamax, things like this (and JFK) wouldn’t have happened.
3) Armed guards at schools. OK, Wayne forgot that 1/3rd of all schools already have guards, or that there were armed guards at Columbine, Virginia Tech, etc. Let’s give this hero some slack; he’s only one man with 3,742 guns under his bed.
