“In a partisan vote of 3-2, the New Jersey Senate Law and Public Safety Committee today passed S993 out of committee,” the Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs’ presser laments. “Despite impassioned testimony from gun owners and Second Amendment leaders who were in attendance.” Click here for bill’s text, which would restrict NJ gun owners to 10-round ammunition magazines and ban the sale of “assault weapons” (list of firearms covered after the jump). “The legislation now moves to the full Senate for a vote, which could come as soon as May 12.” This after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the Drake case on the NJ’s “justifiable need” concealed carry provision. If the bill lands on Republican Presidential hopeful Chris Christie’s desk, will he sign it? . . .

  1. I swear to god they just copy and paste a 20 year old list of weapons and add some bs on the end of it that catches the rest of the “scary black guns.” At least 1/4 of those guns are no longer for sale anyway.

    • I’ve always noticed that as well. The list is stuck in the 1980s for sure.

I’ve always joked that whenever a new “assault weapons” ban comes out that’s based on a list of guns to ban, they just open up a safe and pull out an old 5-1/4″ floppy that just has a single ASCII file “BAD_GUNS.TXT” on it.

      • I love things like the “Bushmaster Assault Rifle” listed, hey guys, change the stamp to the “Bushmaster Child’s toy” like we planned, let’s see them ban child’s toys!

  2. I’m just going to save the moderators the trouble. [FLAME DELEATED] [FLAME DELEATED] [FLAME DELEATED].

    • They didn’t “forget” anything. That would require them to have put some thought into it in the first place. This is basically a copy-paste from the 1994 AWB. Many of these firearms are pretty obscure and/or haven’t been newly manufactured in ages. Famas? There’s like a couple hundred of those in the U.S. from the early 90’s total. Like seriously 100-200 of ’em. Glad they’re banning them now. Probably saving millions of innocent children with that line item.

      • What gets me is that they included the “Chartered Industries of Singapore SR-88”, which (1) has no civvy variant, making it already banned (unless someone managed to have a few imported before the full-auto registry closed, meaning they’re basically still banned unless you can get them to give you a “Dangerous Weapons Permit”, and they don’t like doing that unless you’re filming a movie), and (2) ISN’T EVEN THE NAME OF THE MANUFACTURER ANYMORE. They’re “ST Kinetics” now.

  3. Sweet, my fixed mag SKS is fine, though I only have a 5 round mag due to NZ’s restrictive gun laws (says he while nodding head in support of the Police who administer our fair and just law system…).

  4. This type of cancerous legislation threatens us even if we don’t live under the NJ grabbers boot. It’s just a matter of time considering the brain washing taking place in academia.

      • They are neither blind, nor deaf. They simply don’t care what the Constitution says. They hate it, and those who believe in it, and consider it only a mild impediment to their agenda.

  5. Every .22 cal. rifle I own is now an assault weapon? Give me a break. Somebody is running scared and trying to take NJ’s ability to fight back away. Battle not a massacre!

  6. If Christie signs this bill, he can gain the weight back because his presidential hopes are DONE.

    • Anything less than Christie using executive order to enact constitutional carry in NJ is already a lost cause IMO. I would probably vote for Obama’s 3rd term before I let that fat slob into DC.

      • He definitely is done. Jeb Bush has sidled into Christie’s spot as the weak fat special interest Dem lite in the 2016 presidential race.

    • If Jabba the Hutt signs it, it will ONLY be to try and persuade people like you to vote for him. Once he sat on the throne, he’d go back to his gun grabbing ways.

      • As President (not that he’d be on my top 20 list), I really don’t think Christie would spend any political capitol or use time/resource to expand gun control. I don’t think he has a hard-on for disarmament. He probably would do nothing to expand 2A freedom. I wouldn’t put it past him to veto some pro-2A bills or pull a Toomey to get Dem support for something else he wants. But compared to Hillary? And I think he’d be much more likely than another big-government Bush reign in wasteful spending. No way I support him in the primary, but I’ll take him over Hillary if it comes to that.

  7. It feels an awful lot like the legislature has already decided to just blow this thing through approval. The hearings are just for show, but they’re not listening. Christie may be proud of his veto tally, but I have a bad feeling he’s going to sign this one. We can’t even be “trusted” pump our own gas, let alone defend ourselves. The proper authorities will protect us. They shoot themselves in the leg now and then (two published incidents in the last two weeks), but no one’s perfect…

  8. Question:

Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder such as the “Street Sweeper” or “Striker 12″

Could that be stretched to include the Judge?

  9. Why is the Street Sweeper still on lists like this? Isn’t it an NFA item and therefore banned already in NJ? Also, isn’t it a POS gun that hasn’t been made or sold in the US in YEARS?

    • It’s already illegal in NJ, as the BATFE re-classified it years ago as a destructive device, and all destructive devices are illegal by NJ law. Apparently, they just want to “double” ban it.

  10. “Any firearm manufactured under any designation which is substantially identical to any of the firearms listed above”

Ive seen this list before. It looks like it was written in 1992.

The quoted language is similar to the California AR/AK ‘series’ list that was shot down by the state supreme court paving the way for off list lowers.

Someone do a write up showing how the civil disarmament industry hasn’t had a new idea in four decades.

    • Why change what works?

Remember how we all scoffed at the disarmers trying to come up with a legal definition of an “assault weapon”? Well, they did and as arbitrary and capricious as the Federal and individual state AWBs are, none of them have ever been challenged.

    • Well, make sure the designation is not virtually identical! If that’s not what they meant, they should have said what they meant.

    • Sorry but NJ also frowns on completing an 80% whether from an ak flat or milling an ar lower. They require a manufacturing licence and all that entails. It gets murky on whether or not you may be allowed to own it if you build it out of state though.

      • He [Davis] probably meant the Ares Defense SCR, http://www.aresdefense.com/?page_id=729 , which is that AR-15 type rifle with a traditional field stock on it. The fact the bill includes the M1 Carbine makes me think they’d count the SCR as an assault weapon (seems like semi-auto with a removable magazine or “too large[10+]” of a fixed magazine is their problem). It could also be argued the SCR is too close to an AR-15 and is thus sadly banned under the clause “(2) Any firearm manufactured under any designation which is substantially identical to any of the firearms listed above.”

  11. I don’t get the assault weapon sales ban as this is current law in NJ as it has been even prior to the federal ban. Only new thing I see is language that says tube fed rifles are not assault weapons. I also see that retarded I mean retired leo can still carry 15 rnd as can current leo. So basically furthering the divide of the different classes of citizens. Whats that? Shut up slave!!

    • hardlife_nef, really, restarted LEO. You are an ass. By the way, when you are getting your ass pounded into the ground for mouthing off to someone, don’t call the police, remember, they are restarted.

      • Not going to correct your spelling, but I will state that I meant that as how we used it in the Marines. If unsure what that means I suggest you ask someone that knows As for getting pounded, well I had my share of ass kickings, I’m not superman. That being said I’m no easy meat. I can, have and will defend myself with fists, elbows, knees head, knife and gun. Cops can pick up the dirtbags or cart me away in a bag whichever is appropriate. Such is life.

      • >implying cops could POSSIBLY arrive in time to protect you
        >implying cops have a legal obligation to protect you

        • How many times have you been in a self defense situation where you could even call a cop if you wanted to? I never have. I have had 3 DGUs and 6 attempted muggings. I was stabbed in one attempt and had the mugger give me back $5 once so I could get home! Thing is calling the police was never an option in any of those situations until they were over.

        • That’s exactly my point. Saying “you made fun of this group of people, so when you’re in a situation where they’d be worthless anyway, don’t bother asking them for help” is an insane statement to make.

      • ” By the way, when you are getting your ass pounded into the ground for mouthing off to someone, don’t call the police, remember, they are restarted.”

Works both ways sport. Remember when you are getting your butt pounded into the ground for attempting to be a tough guy you really need to loose your arrogance and attitude. The need to curtail the paranoia and bully mentality that accompanies many police officers is becoming more and more apparent. If the departments will not do it than it falls to those they attempt to make victims of their fragile egos.
Police should not have a greater right of self defense than the people they work for. The problem is that the minions of the state see themselves as special and deserving of greater latitude and action. This is supported by a justice system that is biased against everyone except the state. Oh well.

  12. That list is identical to the one we have in MD.
Perhaps the NJ legislature felt slighted that our state banned “assault weapons” before they did.

Having said that, our feature test isn’t as restrictive.

    • This is the same exact list that’s already on the books for NJ. 2-feature test for “assault weapons” unless it’s a shotgun, then it’s a 1-feature test. Other than the magazine limit reduction, nothing else changes. But by dropping it from 15 to 10, so many things become illegal. Just about any pump shotgun can hold more than 10 thanks to tube extensions and the 1 3/4″ rounds.

    • Because you’re not looking at what they’re banning… The bans aren’t about things that are used in crimes, they’re banning anything that could be useful during a civil war.

      • interesting thought, publius.

i’m inclined to say they’re just banning anything they can ban, since their ultimate goal is to ban all guns and ammo of all kinds, and since their knowledge and reasoning ability are generally too low to come up with the strategy you discern.

    • That is a beautiful M1 carbine. Must be a Winchester or Inland. There is an irony here, though, that only us “gun people” see: The actual M1 (Garand) with it’s .308 ammo is far more lethal than the carbine. It doesn’t make the list because of it’s 5 round mag well capacity, but with a .308, even a bolt action, you only need 1 round to cause more hell than a .30 carbine can. Libtards are f##king morons!

      • You are correct about the rifles capability. Just a thought however. The Garand is 30-06 unless rechambered and it utilizes an 8 round en-bloc clip to contain the rounds, the only true “clip” in an MBR that is a clip-all others are magazines. A fact seemingly unknown to all the weapon expert liberals that crop up.

  13. Won’t this violate inter-state commerce? If this passes, NY, NJ and MA will create a NE blockade. If I were moving to ME I could be subject to harassment, search/seizure and possible arrest. NJ had a precedent case a few year’s back…

    • Wasn’t that precisely why Volkmer-McClure was written? (You know, the law that’s routinely ignored by NY, NJ, MA and seems to have a carve-out for them to continue to do so in any proposed federal legislation.)

  14. Well thank goodness they banned the scary FN FNC, it looks so much scarier than it’s younger brother the FN SCAR which they don’t ban.

Or where they ban the Mini-14 but not the Mini-30, or ban the Sig 550 series but not the Sig 556. Sure glad they specifically listed the FAMAS/MAS 223, a rifle you are less likely to find than say… a unicorn.

Why won’t THESE people learn? Hundreds of impassioned gun owners can debate the committee but they don’t even listen anymore. I hope New Jersey has the ability to recall politicians… that’s something that should be a part of every level of government from local on up.

    • “2) Any firearm manufactured under any designation which is substantially identical to any of the firearms listed above.”

      No, they got it.

      • No, they don’t. This is language that’s been on the books since the late 70’s or early 80’s (hard for me to remember seeing as I was born in ’85.) This ban isn’t new.

You can build yourself an AR all day every day. I have a few and I’m not unique in that regard. ARs are more popular here than regular “sporting” rifles. When you compare the function of “NJ legal” AR-15s to a Colt semi-automatic AR, you’d be hard-pressed to describe what makes it FUNCTIONALLY different. But the “evil” bayonet lug… take that off and you’re good! Or the flash suppressor. Muzzle brake good, flash suppressor bad. Collapsible stocks are a no-no, but you can pin it in place on the shortest setting. Because you know… so easy to conceal now that you can’t make it LONGER.

No, indeed they do NOT get it. Just another case of people who know nothing about guns writing laws about guns.

  15. Even if Christie vetoed it, which I doubt he would being the rank P.O.S. that he is, I’m sure the legislature has the votes to override him anyway.

      • While technically you’re correct (the best kind of correct!), it’s probably not for the reason that you think. New Jersey is unique in that the governor has absolute veto power. If it gets vetoed, it cannot be sent back to the state legislature for an over ride vote.

Christie cannot be re-elected in in the next election as governor thanks to term limits. If he wants to be in the White House as Prez or Veep, he HAS to veto the bill. His post-Newtown gun violence commission (run by the blue side) conceeded in their report that a magazine limit reduction would do nothing to curb gun violence. There is literally no upside for him to sign it.

  16. Pretty much what we had in CT before mines the magazine restriction, not terrible really.

You know you have it bad when you look at this and wish for the good old days.

  17. This law will not save a single soul in New Jersey. It’s intent is as nefarious as it pretends not to be. What saddens me most is these clowns in the State House haven’t done anything to make the state better in the last thirty years. Taxes are higher, school cost are outrageous, a high cost of living, poor job market, a fractured housing market, another credit downsize, a tax shortfall (as predicted.) Residents are fleeing in droves to escape the nonsense. Only those less fortunate who are resigned to stay vote these clowns into office each election on their bread and circus promises. What a recipe for disaster.

  18. **For only political reasons I say** I hope that this passes and that Gov. Christie signs it. This would absolutely and finally END his chances to run for president. Good riddance.

**For freedom reasons I say** You shall not PASS!!!

  19. Am I reading that bill correctly? Cause at the ass end, I could swear that active, and off duty LEO’s are only permitted to have up to 15 round mags……so if they have mag limits now hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha mother****ers!!!!!

  20. New Jersey magazine ban,Stupid, stupid, stupid,Soo gangbangers will be turning in their’s or…..using them against the public and police….Hmmmm?? .as Long
as you have DUMBASS LIBERALS running your governments, don’t Bitch! You can’t reason with stupidity you must run as far away from it as you can .Move! Go to a gun friendly state get away from lame brainless let New York and New Jersey and California and Chicago Stupidity stay in those states.Hopefully the gangbangers rob and ply their craft against these politicians when their bodyguards are gone!

    • Thanks for the tip.

Note to all you smug sons of bachelors out there:

Most of us living in serf states can’t just pick up and move. We have families here, religious communities, and careers. We also believe that our natural and constitutional rights must be protected here as well as anywhere else, and we’re willing to struggle to safeguard them, despite the long odds.

If you like where you live, we’re all happy for you. But spare us the supercilious lectures from your armchairs while we’re out fighting the battles.

      • I’m in California, and I tell the “if you don’t like it, move!” types two things:

        1) it’s that exact attitude that f**ked up CA in the first place. Sticking around would make a difference

        2) I’m not Mexican, or European. I’m American, which means not abandoning our homeland and letting someone else fix the problem…and understanding that if you keep running, you run out of places to run.

        • Two things:

          1) There comes a time to recognize that the local fight is lost, and redirect efforts to the federal level. That’s what Heller was, and it worked.

          2) As an American who’s father is an immigrant, and someone who’s sat at a Thanksgiving dinner and been the only person at the table who was born a US citizen, I say that voting with your feet, pulling up stakes, and moving to a place more suited to your preferences is one of the most American things you can do.

We all have ancestors who voted with their feet, even the Indians. It’s just a few more generations back for some of us.

        • As Reagan said in A Time for Choosing, “If we lose freedom here, there’s no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.”

          1. Heller provides the barest minimum of protections, and in such a qualified fashion as not to be much of a reason for celebration. Furthermore, the Court should take the better part of a century to arrive at the realization that handguns cannot be completely banned from the home tells us how much we can hope for in the future from judges. (I do agree there should be a push for national legislation to protect the RKBA – there’s where our biggest opportunity lies.)

          2. Your father ceded foreign land to tyranny and moved to a (largely) free country. What happens when we start ceding parts of our less and less free country? The Left has never shown a willingness to compromise. They will not stop until they have squashed liberty everywhere in the country. And they will attain their goal however they can, whether through executive or judicial fiat, whether through political means or through personal intimidation, just as they have always done on every other issue.

        • With 41 “free” states which respect gun rights and our Constitution, which are passing more and more pro-gun ownership laws as we speak, there are plenty of places to “run”. Punish the slave states, by depriving them of your taxes, and wealth.

  21. That is a beautiful M1 carbine.

    • But – but- but detachable 15 round magazine! Or 30 round!!

BTW, Garand is 8 rounds of .30-’06, but hey…

    • the M1 had an 8 round en bloc clip. one of the reasons my grandfather (USMC, WWII, Korea) loved it so much.

  22. We need to look at a conservative woman candidate if Hitlery runs in 2016 , ya’ll take a look at Nikki R. Haley governor of South Carolina , family oriented , anti abortion , very pro gun , very small and gun business friendly , heck she even got a M&P 9mm for Christmas . A good running mate would be the governor of Georgia , who is very pro gun himself . We need a solid team , oh and it was funny what she had to say about Booobama years ago , the knee jerk leftist s cried about that , so she decided to apologized so they would quit whimpering . Be prepared and ready. Keep your powder dry .

    • Can Haley win a debate -win by so much that the media would have to recognize it? I’d like to see Rand Paul or Cruz on the ticket…somebody that will stand up and say “there’s a place for government and government it out of it’s place.” I’m not at all interested in a legislator that has a proven record of laying over and taking it during an non-election year.

    • Haley is a big govt stooge who humped her way into the gov mansion. She lied and tripled medicaid rolls. She was in charge when EVERY single SC workers ID was stolen from SC taxation dept computers. She is allowing the SC highway dept to spend money like water on new roads to nowhere while other roads are falling apart.

She is pro gun, but hardly a Conservative. Do some research on these people before you buy the hype. There are MUCH better choices than Haley out there.

  23. that’s a straight copy of California’s BS list. When have you seen a Calico M900 outside of a movie? They were made in CA, didn’t sell too many, and went under when CA got uber stupid. Sad to know Stupid is viral and contagious among government “leaders”

    • As I’ve said here before, CA has long been the petri dish for anti-gun legislation.
      Copy, paste, done!

That’s what unknowledgeable, ignorant anti-gun fools do when they don’t understand, or care to understand, the subject matter.

  24. This is why we need rino Jeb Bush instead of rino Chris Chrispey. It takes another Bush to undo the mess Obama made fixing Bushes mess.

    • Wouldn’t it be fun seeing how long Jeb could get away with blaming everything on Osama? Whatcha think, a week?

      • Heck, no GOP president would get to blame anything on Obama for even a second. The media criticism would start the day of the election and reach the level of fevered ranting by the time of the inaugural ball.

  25. I guess I better order my M14 barreled receiver before the CA legislature sees this list. The M14 in not a named assault weapon here (yet), and they will be jealous. (An M14 just has to have a muzzle brake instead of a flash suppressor to be legal in CA.)

  26. That’s cool, they left off the Ruger Mini Thirty! LOL The legislators were too afraid to go onto the evil manufacture’s website and copy and paste the rest of their models . . .

I didn’t realize that NJ was experiencing a sweeping crime wave with “assault weapons.” I missed that news story! Oh, just did some research, they didn’t have a sweeping crime wave of assault rifles. And all along, I thought we were solving crime by banning assault rifles . . .

  27. Yeahhhhh… These guys are idiots. “You can’t have a barrel shroud, it’s dangerous!” Au contraire, Mon Ami, it is actually safe. It protects you from burning your hands, what’s dangerous about that? “Flash hiders are dangerous!” They’re a safety measure. “Muzzle breaks are dangerous!” Okay, when you see people breaking their shoulders from lack of muzzle break, you WILL rethink that, ect.
