According to the United States Constitution, “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Requiring Americans to get a government permission slip to bear arms (a.k.a., a concealed carry permit) is a clear violation of the Second Amendment. From there it’s a slippery slope . . .

The government can then set the criteria for acquiring that permission slip, denying entire classes of law-abiding Americans their Constitutionally protected gun rights. Take New Jersey. Please!

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Friday he’s reversing a policy his predecessor, Chris Christie, put in place making it easier for New Jerseyans to obtain a permit to carry a handgun.

“New Jersey cannot and must not become part of the race to the bottom that we’re seeing across the country,” Murphy, a Democrat, said during a news conference at the YMCA in Trenton. “There are already too many guns in our streets, and simply adding more to the equation will not make us or our communities any safer.”

Christie, a Republican, moved in 2016 to loosen the rules determining who can carry a concealed handgun in New Jersey, a state with some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

Originally, the regulations said residents must show a “justifiable need” to carry a firearm because they had been the target of “specific threats” or attacks.

But Christie’s administration lowered the bar to allow a chief of police or the State Police superintendent to consider permits for residents who can show evidence of “serious threats” against them.

nj.com reports that Murphy has instructed his AG to abandon the rulemaking change.

New Jersey residents must once again attempt to convince The Powers That Be that someone specific is trying to rape, injure or kill them — and then go through the administrative rigamarole (e.g., application, fee, fingerprinting, etc.) — before they can carry a gun to exercise their right to bear arms.

By which time a defenseless, law-abiding citizen could be raped, injured or murdered.

[wikipedia.org reports that “As of the end of 2013, there were 1,212 active Handgun Carry Permits in New Jersey, out of a population of nearly 9 million residents.”]

In the video above, speaking to baying supporters [who think it’s fun to be] at the YMCA, Governor Murphy promises that “this is a step in a long journey in a series of steps.” Consider that a threat and a promise.

  1. SALT in their wounds.. no more state and local tax deductions.. police officer ammunition should be $5 per round if not more and police officer firearm should be 5000 % more then what everybody else pays..
    THE DEMOCRATS MUST BE PUNISHED

  2. I’ll give you a ‘specific threat’. A tyrannical government is trying to rob me of my God given and Constitutionally guaranteed rights. If that ain’t a threat I don’t know what would be.

    • Everyone (progressives) know that Government IS their GOD, Just replace God with Government in the Constitution and Bill of rights. What happened to the center, slightly left of center democrats and center, slightly right of center republicans?
A: Obama’s radical polarization of party’s . Now its ONLY one extreme or the other.

      • The centrists are still there in the Republican party. McCain, Murkowski and Collins are well left of center IMHO. It’s the Demoncrat party that’s pushed the Blue Dogs out.

        • I propose there remain only two parties: one that seeks detail power over the lives of every citizen (resident?), and the other that is just happy to be invited to the swell soirées.
          .

  3. If you can’t say anything good about Democrats…post an article on TTAG. My apologies to the 4 pro gun Democrats left in the US.

    • Pro gun Democrat? The creature is extinct as the Pro life, pro hunting, low taxes, Pro defense, Anti drug, non global warming, pro immigration control or Pro Israel Democrats….

    • if there is a bottom, NJ is at the bottom of practically everything. What a sh!thole that state is, and in every conceivable way.

NJ is always in the top 3 for highest taxes in the country. murphy thinks they are too low. They are going to get taxed good and hard in NJ and they deserve it. They elected that nut by a large amount.

    • New Jersey already is at the bottom: in my opinion New Jersey is the worst state in our nation by any measure. It is the very last state where I would ever choose to live.

    • That’s what I came here to say. New Jersey can’t race to the bottom because it already IS the bottom.

It is #1 on one list, though, and that’s my personal list of states you couldn’t pay me enough money to move to.

  4. Every time a person who is denied their rights is harmed, one of these tyrannical assholes needs to be frogmarched out of his office and impaled in the public square on a 10 foot pike and then left in the sun to die. Repeat as necessary to get rid of tyranny.

  5. ““There are already too many guns in our streets, and simply adding more to the equation will not make us or our communities any safer.”

    SCOTUS, save us!

    (sarc)

    • Has the Third Circuit ruled on the 2A? I can’t think of any opinions. I can only think of opinions out of the 2nd, 4th, maybe the 6th, 7th, 9th and D.C. Circuit.

I was surprised the D.C. Circuit went shall-issue. If they did it, virtually any circuit could.

    • Governor, when are you going to figure out that except for the paltry few law abiding citizens allowed to carry guns, the only guns out there in the streets are carried by cops and criminals. Idiot.

I’ve heard this same refrain–more guns won’t make us safer–so many times out here on the left coast by politicians and urban police chiefs and sheriffs that I am sick of the utter stupidity of their thought processes.

    • “There are already too many guns in our streets, and simply adding more to the equation will not make us or our communities any safer.”

I was also going to comment on this quote. It is important to recognize statements that are objectively lies. I’m not sure if this one. Literally it is a lie, but as a figurative statement, it is misleading if not a lie.

Guns are not “in our streets”; they are possessed, in pockets, holsters, and homes, by individuals with varying motives.
Guns are not “simply added to the equation”; they are, in the case of carry permit issuance, carefully and selectively added based on the motives of generally well meaning individuals.

No, creating a new tax to donate a free new gun to every convicted violent felon getting out of prison will not “our communities safer”.
Yes, allowing citizens (with or without a permit) to add guns to their carry-able possessions will make them safer.

Apparently “us” is different from “our communities”? It goes on and on. “Gun control” itself is a misnomer, so we can’t expect those supporting the disarmament movement to communicate honestly on the subject.

  6. Take a guess: How many body guards with CW does Governor Murphy have to protect him? The way he thinks it should be none because they are not needed in NJ. Stay safe. Dave

  7. I live in NJ and I agree in principle that it is a shithole state, run by democratic libtards who care not for the 2nd amendment or any other amendment that gets in the way of their “progressive” agenda. While it may be fun to mock those of us who live here and who have had our 2nd amendment rights denied, we could use your help getting cases before the courts that will put the issue before the SCOTUS, or to make the Senate vote on Reciprocity as there in NO CHANCE that we will be able to vote the libtards out of office. PS Just assume that not all of us can move out of NJ just now

    • 100% correct. The majority of the US doesn’t fully understand or care how tremendously our rights are being trampled here on the east coast. Being from Long Island and having fought the good fight for years it is disappointing at the lack of support we get from the 45 states who have a functioning 2A in their home states.
One of the biggest offenders is NRA. I can count on getting at least one piece of mail per week from NRA screaming about how expensive the battle is and pleading for our hard earned dollars….but we get zero in return from them.
The suppression of 2A here in NY, in NJ, CT, IL and CA (ok, HI too) are unacceptable but actual support is tough to come by.
The best way out of this mess is straight through the voting booth but too many folks would rather sit at home on Election Day and allow the enemies of our rights to own the State Houses and Legislatures.

      • Worse, the SANCTUARY CITY aspect of those areas, means you’re going to have to kill some of your neighbors to get your vote to count.

[ON A SIDE NOT: THE STUPID WHACK-A-MOLE NINJA ADS ARE A MF PITA AND HAVE NEARLY MADE ME QUIT, SO YOU’VE PROBABLY LOST CLIENTELLE ALONG THE WAY. NUT PUCH THE CREATER OF THAT PLEASE].

      • Here is an idea. You anti-NRA snpwflakes got start a troll website where can bellyache together. I bet mediamatters will help you out.

    • WhiskyMaker and FedUponLI,

You live in states where a SUPERMAJORITY of voters demand laws that infringe on your unalienable right to keep and bear arms. There is no advocacy or lobbying organization that will ever be able to overcome a SUPERMAJORITY electorate in your state.

And the U.S. Supreme Court will not be able to render any favorable rulings for your states until another Justice leaves the bench, Trump appoints a Justice that will uphold the Second Amendment, and the Senate approves that appointment.

Those are the FACTS whether you like them or not.

    • Hear-Hear ! Same for those trapped within the boarders of the People’s Republic of Massachusetts ! We to are awaiting the restoration of our 2nd Amendment rights…As well as affirmation of The US Constitutional -Bill of Rights as a whole….Our next is next on the list in close running with NJ., CA., CT., NY., MD., etc….As Eastern Bloc Communist held Authoritarian police-states…And the Left-Coast….I’m NOT interested in being intimidated by the state, or the Paramilitarized Law Enforcement community to give up, or surrender my civil rights under the pretense of arrest, prosecution, or force of arms…This is the very definition of “Authoritarianism”, or a “Police-State…” It’s driven to this point through “Creeping Incrementalism…” Which I believe is another form of “Divide and Conquer…”

  8. Can we all, then, just do NJ a solid and raise our right hands and specifically threaten each and every NJersy-ite with sever bodily harm if they don’t change their EVIL POS COMMUNIST (D)head ways? We kinda do that already with the Constitution, but, every now and then, the threat to ignorant tyrants must be refreshed with the blood of TTAG bloggers discourse, before it comes to actual battle.

Would that cover it. Attorneys please weigh-in.

  9. Who is the be-turbaned dude to the gov’s left? Thought he was a bodyguard but he spoke later. I’ve searched but can’t find anything. He appears to be some kind of minor functionary.

  10. The important message here is being overlooked. This is the wave of the future; state-level assault. Requiring a “reason” violates Heller and McDonald. The New Jersey governor is defying the US Supreme Court. The underlying strategy here is to cause a state-by-state challenge to gun laws, leading to a host of individual challenges of the laws in the federal courts. All the while, the anti-gun states are able to act as they wish (if states will defy the SC, they will happily ignore lower courts). It should be noted there is no penalty for a state to defy court orders (taxpayers may end up paying for sanctions, but the state officers are untouched). The social compact that made the nation possible (common and general agreement to follow law and courts) has been broken for years. We are on the road to national anarchy (each state ruling outside “the law of the land”). Sanctuary cities are the the most visible examples, but set the stage.

  11. So on a whim I Googled death by gun an came up with a Homicide Report by counties for NJ. First off, this is just a homicide chart. It does not distinguished by gun or by wet toasters. But since the goal is “saving lives”, I believe he is referring to this statistic. For 2016, there were a total of 361 deaths. 375 for 2015 and 361 for 2014. Essex (126) Camden (44), Hudson (29), Mercer (25) and Union (22) account for about 62% of those deaths. Essentially 6 in 10. Statically, it would be 7 in 10 since you cannot have a partial corpse. Camden and Mercer are gateways from the Philadelphia and have a “reputation” themselves. Essex, Hudson and Union are up north across the river from New York City and are have endless turmoils in reference to crimes. So let’s ban_fill in the blank_ across the state because that will decrease the homicides. 5 of 21 counties only account for 115 deaths. Less than that of Essex alone. Next you’ll pass a law making it a crime to kill someone. Focus on the problem area instead of propping your socialist ideals and thesese “gun crimes” you’re supposedly trying to prevent will be resolved. Additional laws and regulations in infringe on the 2nd Amendment and law abiding citizens. It has never affected the criminals.

    • Camden, enough said. Essex=Newark., Hudson=Jersey City, Mercer=Trenton and Union=Elizabeth. I bet if you threw in Passaic=Patterson and Atlantic=Atlantic City, there wouldn’t be all that many homicides left in the state. Key feature of this, all the above cities have Democrat mayors and Democrat majority city councils.

    • Los Angeles has about that many murders each year. And just like NJ, the only people carrying guns there are cops, criminals, and perhaps a few tourists from elsewhere in the state. Go figure.

  12. I hate to have to be the one to tell you Murph, but we’re already at the bottom in so many categories that your horses**t pronouncements won’t change anything. You’re going to leave us in far worse shape when your four years are done.

  13. I have little sympathy. A large portion of my family fled NJ in the past 20 years due to taxes and overbearing government. That was the smart move.

Further, NJ’s Constitution unlike those of many other East Coast states, contains no state-level version of the 2A. However, it does contain Article 1, Section 2, Subsection A which reads “2. a. All political power is inherent in the people. Government is instituted for the protection, security, and benefit of the people, and they have the right at all times to alter or reform the same, whenever the public good may require it.”

In other words, “You get what you vote for”, or as Hunter S. Thompson put it: “No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride…and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well…maybe chalk it up to forced consciousness expansion: Tune in, freak out, get beaten.”.

NJ bought the ticket. Now it’s time to enjoy whatever ride that ticket was for.

    • Who are the people of NJ????

They hate guns & self service gas. Raised the Smoking age, yet tax it to death. They think you should pay a fee to be on a public beach. Yet from Daytona to Waikiki, they are free. As well, you should pay to flee over bridge, tunnel or ferry. Think Bon Jovi & Springsteen are better than Beethoven. and Tony Soprano is just a typical small businessman.

The voices here are a minority of a minority there.

  14. ““There are already too many guns in our streets, and simply adding more to the equation will not make us or our communities any safer…”

I assume Governor Murphy will be turning down any protective services from armed State Police?

    • foghorn5950 and Hannibal I see you both are looking at the WHOLE picture. I only hope others open their eyes also. Stay safe. Dave

  15. Murphy, a Democrat, said during a news conference at the YMCA in Trenton. “There are already too many guns in our streets, and simply adding more to the equation will not make us or our communities any safer.”
Says the guy with armed bodyguards to protect him from other democrats.
Prisons are full of democrats for a reason.

  17. I had not noticed everyone in NJ was buying guns and carrying them around. Murphy seems to think this to be the case so he made it a big priority.
Fortunately I can watch his shenanigans on Tv and not have to live under his rule.
