It’s no secret that I love the Shield RMS (full review here). A simple, lightweight, highly visible, reliable micro red dot? What’s not to love?! Well . . . Shield thought of a few ways to improve on the RMS and, from the sounds of it, they have with the new RMS-W. We’ll get our hands on one soon and start putting it through its paces on a couple of carry guns. For the time being, here’s Shield’s press release:

SHIELD SIGHTS ANNOUNCES THE RMS-W RED DOT SIGHT

12/4/2018 – Dorset, England, U.K. – Shield Sights is pleased to announce the release and full production of the RMS-W. The RMS-W is the water-resistant and ruggedized version of the existing Shield RMS line of sights.

The Shield RMS-W is designed to resist damage from water or other harsh environmental conditions. The RMS-W is gasket sealed to create a watertight fit between the slide and the battery compartment without the need of a special mounting plate. When the sight is properly mounted it will remain watertight at depths of up to 20 meters for 30 minutes.

The RMS-W also features a newly designed frame which adds thickness to the aluminum lens housing as well as a newly designed side profile. The RMS-W will also be the first sight in the RMS line to benefit from the newly developed hard coated polymer lens. These modifications have increased flex strength of the standard RMS sight by over 80% while maintaining the original viewing window and mounting footprint. The RMS-W will fit any slide that has already been cut for the RMS, RMS-C, SMS, or Jpoint.

Features:

– The RMS-W is machined from aerospace grade aluminum

– Gasket sealed to ensure consistent waterproofing

– Increased thickness of aluminum housing

– Hard coated polymer lens to resist scratching

– Very fast automatic brightness adjustment

– Very low profile to Co-Witness standard iron sights

– 2-3 year average battery life with standard CR2032 battery

– Weight: 17.6 grams / .62 ounces battery included

The RMS-W is available with the option of 4 MOA or 8 MOA dots with an MSRP of $499

  1. Right now all my $ is going for ammo and gun cleaning products. Thanks for the review. If I find myself needing an optically enhanced firearm, this is something I probably would considered. -30-

  2. Just another useless item for the idiots to buy. I don’t understand the logic of buying these things. I guess bragging rights. You can get the best iron sights ever made for less than $200 and with them you’ll shoot just as well as with that electronic POS. And for the price of a quality gun no less. No thanks, I’ll keep my pistols hyst as they are, LEARN TO USE YOUR PISTOLS IRON SIGHTS FOLKS, THIS WILL GET YOU KILLED.

    • That’s why they’re made to be able to Co witness your iron sights right through the RMR if you want, no one getting killed here, I do the killing, Love my RMR with Co witness iron if needed

    • I am actually glad for these things. The more firearm enthusiasts there are, the safer our 2A rights will be. And let’s face it: if it weren’t for accessorizing and dressing up their gun like a freakin’ Barbie doll, we would lose a lot of gun owners. If fads are what it takes to get more gun owners, then so be it.

    • Absolutely!!! The military should also return to all iron sights… since being able to threat focus rather than sight focus is apparently going to “get you killed”…LOL!

    • I shoot more accurately with electronic sights, scopes or lasers compared to open sights, ymmv. The difference almost make me feel like I’m cheating, which is why rds sights are handled in a separate class in IDPA and similar competitios. I find speed a toss up. I carry only open sights concealed because the are smaller and are 100% reliable. At many self defense distances point shooting is viable making the sight type moot.

  3. Is anyone else confused at a decent modern small arms accessory coming out of the U.K.? Between the L85 and vacuum of a civilian small arms industry England doesn’t come to mind when I think about arms centers of the world.

    • Accuracy International Ring a bell?
      High End shotguns and Rifles?
The UK has a strong History of producing small Arms, now they produce one of the best sniper rifles in the world and bigger guns, like mortars and artillary.

This sight is high end, not sure any of them can justify the $500 price though.

  4. Remember when big ass TV s cost thousands? You get one free now when you get a new phone. These red dots should be about the same in another week or two. You can get a spare Glock or 3 Hi Points for that price.

  5. That thing is junk and beyond unreliable! If it gets dropped once, it’s done. Watch the Sage Dynamics review on YouTube. Straight up POS.
