LaserLyte’s announced their new-again RTB-XD top-mounted laser for Springfield XD and XDm pistols. Evidently planning to equip the entire polymer pistol world, the RTB-XD compliments LaserLyte’s RTB-GL model for Glocks. The RTB-XD will slide right into the rear sight dovetail on any XD variant gun. The best thing about a top-mounted laser: you don’t need a new holster. So you won’t have to toss out the rig(s) you already own just because you decided to trick out your pistol with a frickin’ laser beam. And the price is nice, too – $139 MSRP, which puts retail in the $110 range. Ish. Full press release after the jump . . .

COTTONWOOD, AZ (February 2012) –  LaserLyte®, the leader in laser technology for the shooting sports market for 25 years, brings down the price and ups the performance with the LaserLyte RTB-XD. LaserLyte® returns to basics with the patented RTB-XD rear sight laser that fits the Springfield XD/XDM firearms. The high performance laser built into a rear sight specifically designed for Springfield XD/XDM pistols features a simple, ambidextrous “press and go” activation.  The laser is easily programmable to either constant on or pulse mode.  Another great feature is the “auto-off” feature that displays a unique flash after 5-minutes of operation and automatically turns the unit off after 6-minutes.

Made from heavy-duty, high carbon steel for added durability, the LaserLyte RTB-XD rear sight laser has a black chrome finish for corrosion prevention. A great benefit of the LaserLyte RTB-XD rear sight laser is that the customer will not have to replace grips, internal stock parts or holsters. The LaserLyte RTB-XD rear sight laser is compatible with all Level 1 and Level 2 holsters including the BLACKHAWK!® SERPA® holster system. MSRP on the LaserLyte RTB-XD rear sight laser for all Springfield XD/XDM’s  is only $139.95.

  1. Nice slick looking unit. I remember the early LASERS were big, clunky, required big batteries, were golly gee whiz expensive and not reliable. I can see that they have come a LONG way in 25 years.

  2. $139.99 eh?

That buys about 7 boxes of .45 ACP ammo. You kids have fun with your toys and trinkets, ill be on the firing line getting proficiency the old fashioned way.

  3. “The LaserLyte RTB-XD rear sight laser is compatible with all Level 1 and Level 2 holsters including the BLACKHAWK!® SERPA® holster system.”

Really? Let’s see it fit in a Safariland 6280- there’s no way

Neat idea, but too big. Activation is also an issue- it’s not instinctive like the other laser grips are.

  4. The problem with all lasers is activation. If activation requires a separate motion to turn it on and off, it will not be instinctive enough, nor fast enough. Lasers, like lights, can be a bullet magnet, and there will likely arise a time when you need the laser off instantly.

With the lasers that activate by gripping the pistol, the laser wont be able to be turned off when the gun is held with a death grip which often happens under the stress of a lethal encounter.

  5. To me instinctive activation is a must have. However, my main concern with this unit is that being mounted on the slide it would seem to be subject to much more stress than if mounted on the frame. I believe the slides on auto pistols are subject to more than 45G’s. (That’s a memory number. I have a 500G memory number floating around but it sounded too extreme so I chose the smaller number 🙂 )

It might be perfectly fine, but I give it good odds of early failures. Maybe not, new technology is just that – new.
