Daniel Defense - First Choice 300 AAC Blackout Ammunition

There was a time when the gunblogsphere dismissed 300 AAC Blackout. Developed by AAC and Remington under the auspices of Kevin Brittingham, the 7.62×35mm ammo was seen as yet another boutique cartridge destined for obscurity. Shooters soon discovered that 300 BLK offered more-than-merely adequate terminal ballistics and improved flash and sound suppression for their AR-style rifles, requiring only a barrel change. The only significant downside: the bullet starts heading for the dirt at 460 meters (480 yards). And so, here we are, with Daniel Defense offering both gun and now ammo for 300 BLK enthusiasts. Press release after the jump . . .

Black Creek, GA -(AmmoLand.com)- Daniel Defense, engineer and manufacturer of the world’s finest firearms and accessories, has released the first caliber of high-quality ammunition it will offer under its First Choice brand: 300 AAC Blackout.

The company also has plans to expand its offerings to include the popular 5.56mm and 7.62mm calibers in the future. The new Daniel Defense 300BLK (7.62x35mm) Subsonic Ammunition is designed for target shooting and/or home defense. It is manufactured using the highest-quality components available, including durable brass cases and precision 220-grain LapuaScenar-L OTM bullets, the first choice for serious target-shooting competition.

“We’re passionate about the launch of our 300BLK ammo,” said Cindy Daniel, Vice President of Marketing. “It represents a whole new era for our brand—one where we can now ensure that the ammo that goes into our firearms is as high quality as the firearms themselves.”

To ensure the highest levels of quality, each and every First Choice round stamped with a “DD” must undergo and pass a thorough inspection to ensure critical dimensions that affect accuracy are met before it leaves the Daniel Defense factory. The Daniels have a long-standing philosophy on seconds and blemished product, “If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t go to market.”

Daniel Defense 300BLK Subsonic Ammunition retails for $50.00 for a box of 30 rounds. It is currently for sale only directly from Daniel Defense online at www.danieldefense.com. Free shipping is included on any ammunition purchase of a case, which contains four boxes of ammo, or more.

  1. Don’t know about DD and what they load but the Missouri 245 gr coated lead slugs are just the ticket for subsonic and they work like a champ in my cut down Lake City brass.

  2. I am a 300blk fanboy and have mixed emotions here. Plus that DD is putting out ammo, minus that it’s $1.60/Rd…. It should retail at no more than 80/90c per rd to be competitive IMHO. 300blk can be a tack driver but subsonic ammo isn’t meant for much past 150yrds anyway.aybr that’s msrp? No. Their website has it for $50 (free shipping on four boxes!!). No thanks, but thanks!

    • Just a projectile is about fifty cent piece for reloaders.

this is not cheap by any means but it is a premium bullet

      • Sierra 110gr HP bullets are $27 for a box of 100, and the load only uses 19-20gr of H110, 2,280fps. It’s about the cheapest load I’ve found for 300BLK.

      • The problem is that sticking a Lapua bullet on a subsonic load is just dumb. How many situations can you think of where you need match grade accuracy in a subsonic load. Subsonics have a built-in inaccuracy factor due to the uneven burn caused by the partially loaded case. I don’t see this ammo selling very well unless the price comes down. Way down.

  3. There must be a hell of a lot more suppressed users out there than I would have imagined for this limp cartridge to be carving out any sort of commercial success, as it seems to be.

    Alas for the 6.8 SPC!

  4. Fantastic roudn. Far superior to 556 in its supersonic loading, but until its price drops its still essentially irrelevant when you can buy 7.62×39 AR’s. Until that happens its just a fun toy for rich supressed sub-sonic fans.

  5. Wouldn’t use a 220gr OTM subsonic for home defense, but it’s probably using the Sierra MatchKing bullet which is good and accurate.

  6. 300 BLK does one thing fairly well and does nothing spectacular. It does nothing that conventional cartridges can’t do, and not very much of that…an ingenious solution to a nonexistent problem. It was, however, very well marketed and opened up more sales for those who want every new gadget. YMMV
