New from Colt: Loads of Modern Sporting Home Defense Rifles

If you’re in the gun making business, it’s hard to look at the market for black modern sporting home defense rifles and ignore it. And Colt isn’t. I mean, they are in the gun biz and they’re going after the assault rifle market (there, I said it). To hear Colt’s head of marketing tell it, the storied riflemaker now has 30 new SKUs (that’s guns to you and me) designed for the civilian market. Joyce Rubino says her employer will be rolling out the firearms over the course of 2012 . . .

Colt plans to attract Joe Hoghunter with their new modular carbine [above] in .308 Win. Initially, it’ll come in any color you want as long as it’s black. But Colt will be introducing a number of fashion-forward options down the road (e.g., desert tan, OD, various shades of camo and the Dr. Doofenshmirtz edition). Modularity means changing out the model’s barrel and buffer—to turn it into a 5.56 tactical marvel— will be a cinch.

And then there’s Colt’s new AR-15 A4 tactical carbine [below]:

This is a light weight pencil barrel shooter weighing in at only 5.5 lbs. The 16″ barrel rifle will MSRP at $1,136. It starts shipping next month.

For gunnies who believe in One Caliber to Rule Them All, Colt’s making the 9mm carbine. In a few months, they’ll add a new 9mm flat top to their current A1 sight configuration. The A1 handle version will MSRP at $1,176, the flat top at $1,248.
