Gun safety is everyday, no days off. So to speak. By the same token, if you have a negligent discharge, trying to brush off the fact makes you look like a…I’m not sure quite how to put it. Something lamentable. Especially if you’re a trainer. Teachable moment gone! Only not on YouTube….

    • If I ran the zoo, he’d have been gone long before. His attitude, shouting rapid fire commands, being the only one with a gun, or not without one, and his swagger make for enough signs that he is dangerous as a teacher.

      Throw in that he’s short, balding, and growing a healthy belly places him in a high-risk category from an gun trainer standpoint. Too much baggage and too much to prove. Cut him loose.

        • Except Chrome on Android doesn’t allow extensions. I’ve just stopped browsing TTAG on my phone.

        • I have 3 browsers on my phone, the default samsung, firefox, and chrome. I do facebook on the samsung, general browsing including ttag on firefox, and outlook on chrome. Makes tracking me a little harder i guess. But the main thing is that firefox on android has adblock. The only ads i see on ttag are the paid articals and the brownells ads. I’m fine with them.

    I don’t really fault the guy for the ND, I mean, well I do but it doesn’t make me angry. His lying about it does.

  12. The biggest problem with this, in my opinion, is that there was absolutely no reason to have that gun loaded during that demo.

    Show them how to shoot, then show them how to load, is that really that hard?

    • Demonstrating with a loaded gun is not the only problem with that douchebag.

      He fired a round into the ceiling. It happened because he had his finger on the trigger before his sights were on target (rule #3 violation).

      I get the impression he was a self-described trainer who could parrot the techniques he was taught but couldn’t do it safely.

    I always show new shooters an empty magazine, clear the gun so they see it cleared, and insert the empty magazine so they know the gun is safe and incapable of being fired.

    • And yet, as police trainers go, perfectly average. This is what you get when you remove personal responsibility for their own bad judgement from an equation, folks! When bad judgement is allowed and encouraged, it grows until it consumes everything. This is where the US is at this moment in history. Consuming itself as rapidly as its low intelligence will allow.

        • I have been to LE ranges. I work for an LE agency. Nobody in the LE world is training their recruits on a .44 magnum. Nobody in the LE world is shooting revolvers single action any more. No agency that still uses revolvers is training push/pull (my agency still has many people qualified only on revolvers), cup and saucer is still the routine. Nobody dresses like that on a law enforcement range. Minimal Google skills will show it occurred at a tourist trap rent a gun range in Nevada.

          Anarchy is great if you are 14 and are looking to shock people. It is less good as a real system of gov’t. Or lack there of, I guess.

        • I think we have a misunderstanding. It was never my point that this was a class FOR Law enforcement, only that the ‘instructor’ had the swaggering attitude of an acting or former LEO. It was long ago confirmed that this is a large, albeit pretty slimy, private range in LV. But a lot of LEOs moonlight or retire(and sometimes even get fired) and move to civilian firearm training.
          They find it easy as so many civilians think they “know about guns” simply because they were a LEO… once. Thus, the swaggering, condescending stupidity such as demonstrated here. It is my hypothesis that this jackass is one such. Have you any info on that, one way or the other?

        • Even if he was an LEO, he is acting as a civilian trainer. Those weird little moves he makes have the look of some of the less reputable tacticool schools though.

  18. Clearly the instructions being covered belonged first in a classroom with unloaded firearms. Second, early in the video he turns with the loaded revolver and a student must move out of the way or be flagged by a loaded and cocked revolver.

    Obviously Mr. “Tactical” is not ready for primetime in front of students, whatever range employs him should pull his ticket.

    BOOM!
    Since I was shooting and not instructing, it didn’t look as bad as this but it was the same thing. I had never shot such a hard recoiling gun and was inexperienced with revolvers in general. After a couple shots, I had a death grip on the gun, including my trigger finger. In my case, the sights were on target and I was willing to destroy it but just not so soon.
    I was pissed off at myself and even admitted to my wife and son who were with me that I had made a mistake. Teachable moment.

        Then I decided to repost with the correct word and delete the first one but by then I guess it timed out because it wouldn’t delete.

  24. The first red flag is the .44 magnum. Only the super tactical trainers teach new comers with one of the largest pistol calibers available. You can’t learn gun saftey/handling with a rimfire.

    • My guess: bachelor/birthday/etc party who’s NOT there to learn range safety, they just bought a “package” that includes time with a 44mag, semi-auto, and a machine gun, or some equivalent package. Hence the 44mag instead of rimfire. Do I agree with it? No. Can you reasonably expect a rental range to have everyone take a 30-60 minute safety class, and spend 15 minutes each working through dry fire, rim fire, bolt action/single shot centerfire, etc prior to putting 100 rounds through their favorite “Call Of Duty” firearms downrange? In an ideal world, yes. In the real world, no, that’s just not going to happen.

      With competent range officers, 5 minutes going over the 4 basic rules, then going over the 4 basic rules again, then having the renters tell you the 4 basic rules, then demonstrating safe handling/clearing on an EMPTY GUN for each weapon being rented is enough for basic gun handling when being closely monitored one-on-one with a range officer. Is it enough for machine gun rental? The plentiful holes in the ceilings of most machine gun rental establishments seem to suggest no, that’s not enough. But to throw a few 44 magnum rounds downrange, shoot a semi-auto ar, and maybe a glock/equivalent sure. Keep in mind, if you make the 99% undergo the extra 2-300% burden of extensive training required for the 1% to be safe UNATTENDED makes the sport less approachable, which means fewer new shooters, fewer #gunvotes, fewer sales, less development, etc. My only complaint would be easy access to machine gun rentals, as those should test proficiency in rifle handling prior to shooting IMO. Even with demonstrated proficiency having the rifle tethered and/or using a gunport would likely increase safety immensely.

  26. Don’t do the tactical support thumb forward grip on a revolver. The blowback isn’t as bad as the front of the cylinder, but there is still some there.

  28. So the people in the class practicing there look like they probably have never even held a handgun before and Instructor Doofus here is going to introduce them to the 44 magnum? And start them off with an ND example just for fun.

  31. Beyond the obvious epic fails here, in his instruction he’s advising to lock the arms; I was taught decades ago by my Dad to keep my arms slightly bent. Is “arms locked” SOP these days? Serious question…..

    • I lock arms but they are both pressing out. This guy teaches push with strong hand and pull with support hand.
      That technique seems more suited to the Weaver stance.
      I would rather lock arms out so that they serve the same purpose as a butt stock on a rifle. Recoil is directed into the shoulder and there is one less pivot point to affect accuracy.
