“According to a federal law enforcement official, the rifle Mateen used to murder and maim more than 100 people was a Sig Sauer MCX. Mateen legally purchased the weapon, similar to an AR-15, on June 4 in Port St. Lucie, Florida, near where he lived. (He legally purchased a Glock 17 handgun the following day, which he also carried during the attack.)”

As with the Bushmaster used by Adam Lanza in the Newtown shooting, MoJo’s doing her level best to make the SIG SAUER MCX infamous. And it appears to be working to some degree. We’re seeing all kinds of eyeballs on our review of the gun Nick posted eight months ago.

How’s this for ominous?:

Although the legal civilian version of the gun fires on semi-automatic, it can be highly lethal. Indeed, like many of his recent predecessors, Mateen was able to unleash a devastating barrage of gunfire. The law enforcement official declined to comment on the total number of rounds fired in the attack. But, he said, it was “obviously a lot.”

Oooooh, and they drop this bit of trivia, too:

According to the book Guns of Special Forces 2001-2015, the MCX is known in military circles as the “Black Mamba” and was developed at the request of the US Army’s special operations forces.

It’s amazing what some deft Google-fu will yield. Of course, virtually no one’s ever heard the MCX referred to by that snappy moniker, but what the hell. Mother has to do what she can to make SIG’s gun sound as ominous as possible. You go, girl.

      • I took a look at them at the NRA meeting and was impressed. In their catalog they list a conversion kit that allows you to use a mil spec lower but would allow you to fold the stock like the MCX. I really want to see the price on that setup but my google-fu must be weak now.

      • I disagree. The MCX is quite favorably priced. Go handle or shoot one. As long as Sig makes the MCX, it will be hard to argue for an AR at the same price point. I’m just waiting for the .300 Blackout factory SBR unicorn version to become available.

    • They (the snowflake media sicophants) said the same of my Sig 556 in 2008.

It’s black, it’s evil, it has the ability to control minds, and slay innocents in mass abundance.

/sarc for the DHS and DOJ screeners.
      Damn sad.

    • I have one in 5.56 and I love it. Trying to save up the money to put a trijicon accupoint on it. The mcx is so much lighter than my ar and just handles beautifully.

  1. Just about any barrage of gunfire is devastating against unarmed soft targets at short range in a restricted space.

    • Especially with, essentially, three full hours of a captive audience of disarmed victims and no armed response.

With that much time, he could have used a bolt-action rifle, and accomplished the same end.

      • I have listened to several of the briefings and was made to believe that all the shooting took place in the first couple minutes and none during the standoff. In an article with a victim named Orlando he stated that there was shooting, then it stopped, then it started up again after the terrorist called 911. I’m not sure how many rounds he fired but 3 hours it could have been a break open.

        • We will never find out the exact scenario from official sources. Cover, cover, cover. Cops need new ROE’s. If a Muslim is shooting, go straight in. But I guess they are paid to dress up like Fallujah but still go home safe at night.

        • According to texts sent from a bathroom in the club at 0240 (40 minutes after the first shots were fired) the shooter was still hunting and killing victims, so…

      • I could have accomplished the same result with nothing more than a decent sword in that scenario … no firearm needed.

  2. Mother Jones is a fucking rag. How dumb is the left, that they make one particular king of gun bad. LMFAO Does anyone actually read MOJO bull shit?

    • I thought Black Mamba was Megamind’s evvviiiillll costume.

I’m pop-culturally overloaded to the point of confusion.

  3. Oh yeah! Rampant angry left-wing Liberal -Fascists all over the tv news ,and Internet. All with the IQ’s of a Butternut Squash…Ranting that we need to disembowel the entire US Constitutional-Bill of Rights. Prohibitionists, Left-wing news media, Socialist Marxist politcians, schizophrenic DNC memebers, illegal aliens, Foreign Governments, you name it…Ban this gun, ban this right , restrict that, etc…etc… Might as well lower our flag and let a foreign country invade…..Wheres that damn asteroid or comet…We need a reset here on earth..

    • HEY!!! Don’t insult butternut squash that way. It’s a tasty gourd that’s done nothing to harm anyone. So be nice.

    • Dangit, Gretchen!

Maybe you should take a stand to ban pools, bicycles, hard candies, etc to save more lives. Senseless killers of innocents, and none protected as inalienable rights.

Rather, methinks you are jumping on the “ratings train”.

  4. Terrorist attacks don’t highlight that America has an immigration problem, or a gun problem, or a Muslim problem.

Thanks to the aftermaths, they highlight that America has a leftism problem. We’re a nation divided by two political ideologies that cannot coexist, and until the nation sorts it out in a decisive way, no external threat matters.

Just look at the treasonous left calling to take away innocent people’s Constitutional rights in response to a terrorist act, and tell me who the true enemies of innocent Americans are.

    • Absolutely agree! The most damnable thing is when Bush was president, the terror watch list was decried by Democrats as a huge Orwellian big brother push against the rights of innocent Americans, but now that Obama is in office, the Left is silent about the inherently extra judicial nature of that list. No one knows what the criteria are for getting on the list, secret rulings add names to the list without due process but the left doesn’t care about the abysmal track record of our government when they are dealing with citizens lives.

CNN, MSNBC, and now FOX are calling for banning Ass-salt weapons, from the left it’s SSDD, but from FOX is troubling. We are going to lose our right to purchase a product of our choosing, to tinker and customize our property as we see fit, we are going to lose our ability to exercise our rights because our representatives refuse to see reality. “Mass shootings” occur when men who show multiple signs of violent instability in public BEFORE they kill others are not reported to police as possible dangers to themselves and the public. The families, coworkers, friends of these killers are guilty as accessories after the fact, they COULD have stopped these murders but DID NOT, why? And, why will we be constantly compared to murderers because we own firearms? Why are we guilty by association? Why will this suffering continue when we are aware of how to stop it?

  5. I’m willing to bet that anyone who walks into a store and asks to purchase a black mamba will be leaving with something far different than the Sig MCX.

  6. I saw a meme posted on FB by a friend of mine which claimed an AR-15 could fire 13.3 rounds/second. I asked “who can pull a trigger 13 times in once second?”. No reply. Facts don’t matter in their world (but we knew that).

      • By statistically averaging, extrapolating, or interpolating over time
        Example 1, averaging
        series 1: 12 rps
        series 2: 14 rps
        series 3: 14 rps
        Average(12,14,14) = 13.3
        Example 2, extrapolating over time
        shot 1 @ t = 75.2ms, shot 2 @ t = 150.4ms,
        for 1 second, 1/75.2ms = 13.3 rounds
        Similarly, for interpolating over time
        shot 13 @ t = 0.9776s, shot 14 @ t = 1.0528s,
        @ 1s, 13 + (1.0000 – 0.9776)/(1.0528 – 0.9776)*(14-13) = 13.3 rounds

    • Don’t let them see any of Jerry Mickulek’s videos. They’ll lose their collective sh*t thinking -everybody- can do what he does.

  7. 50 people dead wow… almost as bad as holiday weekends in chiraq hard to take left serious when they only really care about specific classes of people

  8. It actually is known as the “Black Mamba”, coined by Kevin Brittingham himself. Nick and Tyler have the t-shirt.

    • Given that that nickname is mentioned in the article itself AND at least five times in the comments above, I find the “actually is known as” a bit intriguing.

It’s probably just me. Carry on.

  9. Well I had to troll Mother Jones. This was my comment.

“Hey, does anybody know where I can get a SIG MPX cheap? Oh, and I just sent another installment of my NRA Life membership in today.”.

Dang I forgot to add I just bought a reserve AR-15 lower too, today rats.

  10. Dammit. For 4 years every freaking rifle has been a “Bushmaster”. Now we get to listen to these ass clowns call everything an MCX.

  11. Are they being sure to use the word “black” to scare their crypto-racist readers?
After all that’s all any of these statist regulations/proposals are ever for.

  12. Only one person has ever referred to the MCX as the black mamba. And that was the creator of the honey badger. You reported on this guys

  13. THAT is seriously sexy. Ya’ know I remember reading the review and thinking” lots of dough”. I’ll never get one and if I ever get an AR variety It’ll be some basic Ruger or S&W or Delton 600buck gun…BTW I don’t think it has a ring like Bushmaster.

  14. The black mamba reference is from some old postings of Kevin Brittingham. It’s a reference to the honey badger since he left AAC

  15. Somebody should demonstrate how unimpressive this guy’s kill count really is, given the weapons he used and the conditions at his disposal. Not discounting the tragedy of this event, or the tremendous loss of lives, but saying this was possible only because of “unrestricted access to weapons of war” is BS. Somebody should do a video replicating this scenario, helpless people trapped in bathrooms, with maybe 50 watermelons, or 2 liter soda bottles, or some other soft targets using a Mosin or some other bolt-action with what the liberals consider “safe/ sporting ammunition capacity”, a revolver, an old pump action .22 or any NY or CA friendly guns, and several household melee weapons (hammers, chef knives, machetes, baseball bats, etc.) to demonstrate the futility of these proposed regulations on a determined killer. I know it sounds dark, and it might be too soon, and we all know die hard liberals will either remain unfazed or try to ban all (even unconventional household melee) weapons, but this is for the fence sitters. The crucial group that could swing the tide of things to come in our favor, those of us who still respect the constitution. Hell, any and all of you who can should do this. Post videos on YouTube, Facebook, whatever you want, and as many of you to get the point across. Spam social media. Let them know this scapegoating of “evil black guns” is BS and nobody’s buying it anymore. RF, if you read this, make it happen. Just omit my handle, will ya?

    • Unfortunately, you are thinking logically in an illogical (leftist) world. I am afraid this will not end pleasantly with considerate debate points bandied about. The days of honest debate appear to be over. May the best prepared survive.

  16. We always rely on Mother Jones for our authentic gun info—BTW, “Black Mamba” is a brand of condoms sold in certain ‘hoods!!! DMD

  17. I recently finished reading “Spain In Our Hearts” by Adam Hochschild. This is an account of the American Volunteers in the Spainish Civil War 1936-1939. Hochschild is a former editor of “Mother Jones”.

Hochschild, repeatedly makes the point that the duly elected Republican Govenment could have could have defeated Franco and his Fascist Nationalist Troops but no one would sell guns to the GOOD GUY Republicans. Sure, the support Stalin provided was a deal with the devil, but that wouldn’t have been necessary if , someone (the U.S.) had provided the GOOD GUYS with GUNS!

I guess today, not so much.

  18. I have a simple proposal. Let the left assemble 50 assorted MSNBC, CNN, AP “journalists” and some dem and RINO “lawmakers”. I’ll bring my two Ruger Vaqueros loaded with .38 special LRN (that I picked up when I thought I’d have enough free time to get into cowboy action shooting). Give me three hours and we’ll see if I can clean up the room.

  19. The MCX was in my short list. I was looking at downsizing the safe and consolidate a few rifles to that rifle. Unfortunately I won’t be able to buy one until November, as long as they don’t get an AWB through.

I have a feeling that the next few weeks will be dangerous. If Faux news is calling for an AWB, then were are pote tially looking at a bumpy ride. There are some Republicans that could fold, selling our rights down the river for a few minutes of looking like they “did something”. The problem is, we should not be ceding any if our rights because of terrorists. That’s the key, the guy was a terrorist.

  20. Did an awb protect paris? Tactically speaking a severe firearm restriction in this country could be really bad for America vs isis. The u.s. has lost our last three wars due to ied’s, vietnam, Afghanistan, and iraq. I’d much rather have one or two mass shootings a year than a campaign of car bombs…..(not that a total firearm ban would stop terrorists from getting firearms, but what if it made them switch strategy to bombs and ieds…)

    • AR is just short hand for any black rifle. Trying to win an argument in the general public with “HA HA, you are so dumb it was an MCX not an AR” is sure to lose. Technical minutiae does not change minds. To Sally Soccermom and Melvin the accountant a magazine fed semiautomatic with a pistol grip is a magazine fed semiautomatic with a pistol grip is a magazine fed semiautomatic with a pistol grip. They don’t care. “But, but, but the Sig has it’s recoil springs above the bolt and it doesn’t have a buffer tube!”. They don’t care. Defend the right to own a semi automatic rifle. Defend the rights of Americans. Don’t be the reporter telling people “the train is fine”.

      • We’re left trying to have a rational, productive conversation with people who have absolutely no knowledge of the subject at hand, or even what they are proposing, or what actual effects such proposed actions would have. And we’re expected to listen to them and just accept the fact that they’re mental midgets and cant spend the requisite time (or don’t possess the mental capacity) to understand a subject that they want to make executive level decisions about.

Cripes. Feels like i’m back at work. Lol

  21. And he was able to afford a high end rifle like that on a security guard’s salary. Anyone read about the two trips he made to Saudi?

  22. “Black Mamba”?

That moniker is of course “RACIST”!

Somebody ought to inform Obama’s Banana Republic Protector Loretta Chimps, I mean Lynch.

  23. “BAN AR15s!”

“What about nearly every other gun ever?”

    “BAN ALL THOSE TOOOOO!”

So you want to fight terrorists by kicking off civil war? Brilliant.

  24. I have a specific question that has not been answered in the news reports so far & I really think it needs to come out.

The shooter was a rent-a-cop & both sig & glock offer discounts to cops, da’s, prison guards, etc.

Did this shooter get a Leo discount on his murder weapons by flashing his badge?

I ask this question, because the bleating from the left infers that “gun control” would have prevented this.

The shooter was an armed rent-a-cop & would have had access to weapons no matter what form of “gun control” you enact. The left doesn’t want to talk about that & finding out that this guy got a discount (and I’d bet he did) would change & re-frame the debate.

Don’t forget Mr Dorner, the psycho cop with the special privileges accorded to those with badges, even in slave states.

    • The comments section on that site is devoid of any intelligence. It sorry how people go off on the NRA like bunch of morons, as they have no clue about what the NRA does. The NRA didn’t kill 49 people, an islamic terrorist did.

      • Well Eugene died 19 years ago so at this point he wouldn’t care plus the design is now open source so no one can claim to own the design to sue over.

Plus these events don’t hurt gun makers if anything every aftermath of a mass shooting sees their profits spike from people buying them up.

  26. I’d better keep my MCX locked up in the safe in the farthest corner of my basement. I can’t trust it now!
