File this one not under the war on Christmas, but under the war on guns. By now you’ve probably been driven crazy by the incessant drone of Christmas music everywhere you go since Thanksgiving (at least). Hang in there, it’s about to stop for another year.

One song you’ve been hearing less of this year, though, is ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Chistmas’. The song was written in 1951 by Meredith Wilson.

Who would have thought the song, first popularized by Der Bingle himself, could somehow become controversial? Well, this is 2019, after all.

Thanks to the mention of a firearm in one line of the song’s lyrics, Mood Media (which owns elevator music provider Muzak and pumps tunes into retailers and other businesses around the country) has zapped the song.

As CNN reports . . .

This year, Mood Media is pulling “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” from its holiday playlists because the song includes a lyric about guns: “A pair of hop-a-long boots and a pistol that shoots.”

“What you don’t play can’t hurt you,” [Muzak DJ Danny] Turner said.

Merry Christmas.

    • I just watched that with the family this morning. The kids came and went, not real interested, but I laughed more at it than ever before. I also noticed the adults are a lot younger than I remember, curious I never realized that before.

    • they’d probably like to…but they have to wait for us disgusting “boomers”….who so readily identify with it…to die off….

  1. That has to be one of the most asinine things I’ve ever heard , and I dont mean the song . So much for freedom of speech !!

    • Rickster,

So much for freedom of speech !!

I have stated the fact many times: the Second Amendment is simply the proverbial “canary in the coal mine” of all rights. Self-appointed elitists despise “little people” which enables those elitists to attack our right to self-defense. Well, it should come as no surprise that self-appointed elitists who reject our right to self-defense also reject our right to speak — and all other rights.

    • Festively appropriate and enough snowflakes do tend to shut down learning in schools and productivity in the workplace. Not to mention create a heck of a mess that takes a lot of effort to clean up. …..wait we are talking about snow right?

    • “Friggin’ snowflakes!”

      Snowflakes?

You do know snowflakes are *white* don’t you?

Is that some kind of a ‘white supremacy’ code word? 😉

  2. “What you don’t play can’t hurt you,” [Muzak DJ Danny] Turner said.

Well, isn’t that special. He’s so woke.

  3. The America we all grew up in is dead.

We are living in a post-Constitutional USA, and the left wing war on common sense, the rule of law, and Judeo-Christian morals as well as the nuclear family continues.

If the founders were alive, the led would be flying, and countless politicians would have been tar and feathered during the Obama reign of errors.

  4. Now Libertarians Liberals and the Left. Now repeat after me.

    • Libertarians are the true conservatives. They know that big government is bad government. They want to roll back repressive laws to allow all people in the US to have more freedom.

      • to RT66paul
When Libertarians call for the End of the “Welfare Industrial Complex”, As conservatives have been doing for decades now. I will believe what you say. It’s conservatives who have said, the Synagogue, the Church, should be the ones helping the poor. The last time I checked the atheist Libertarians Liberals and the Left hated the Synagogue, they hated the Church.
They didn’t like the religious power that came with PRIVATE religious based welfare. The three L’s historically complained all the time about it.

        • That is conjecture in the highest magnitude. Never heard a rule that libertarians had to be atheistic or that they support modern welfare systems. Sounds like your arguments are riddled with no true Scotsman fallacies. From the looks of it, seems like you want an totalitarian theocracy?

But what do I know, I’m an atheist libertarian .. 😉

        • You’re out there. I’ve yet to see a person identify as libertarian then go on to praise corporate or family welfare or the state much at all for that matter. Most real conservatives get no media time and are over 60 these days. It’s a shame that most in the GOP are neocons and big govt hacks.

        • “If you want an example of corporate welfare, look no further than the F-35.”

Corporate welfare moves more money through the economy than traditional welfare. Corporate welfare beneficiaries buy more than traditional welfare recipients. Corporate welfare beneficiaries pay higher taxes than those on traditional welfare. If all the jobs created through corporate welfare ended, we would not be able to shrug-off the result.

      • Guess what I got today!

I paid 35 bucks to be Flu VACCINATTED!!!!

        It was so AWESOME!!!! 😉 😉 😉

      • I got something a whole lot better, the pharmacy tech was cute and gave me her phone number.

Do TTAG a favor and off yourself, OK? 🙂

    • This is not censorship. I like that, very well put. Years back a person this he told me,”Freedom , huh, We have the freedom to do as we’re told.” I’m reminded of him a lot anymore.

    • It already is. Lots of places will only do happy holidays now. Christmas is the c word. I’m seeing the backlash though. Had people all over saying Merry Christmas for the first time in years including business stuff on the phone. It’s nice to hear.

      • Damnnit^ I just spit tator chips on my screen, “I just sht my pants” ho ho that’s funny screen name

        • Little ‘peeegeee2’ is mad at me, Possum.

Here’s to hoping he takes his gun (in the highly unlikely case he owns one, considering he *never* talks guns, just his anti-vaxxx crap no one wants to hear in here, including TTAG’s management) and splatters his brains out… 🙂

    • @guy:
That “X” in “Xmas” is the Greek letter Chi. It stands as an abbreviation of Χριστοσ (i.e. Greek for “Christ”). The Greek letters Chi (X) and Rhō (P) superimposed constitute an ancient symbol for Christ that is still used in the Catholic Church (among others).

  5. Time out for a second, I need to make sure I understand something…..

So a company that plays nothing but instrumental versions of various popular songs has banned a Christmas song because the version they never will play mentions a gun?
Strong in the Libtard this one is!

Shall we make a list of the songs they should ban? Let’s start with every tune from any western, any tune from Star Wars, tunes from any War movie, cop show and anything else we can think of. If we put some effort into it they will be left with a couple of dozen tunes that will soon drive their customers crazy and cause them to seek alternatives to the original elevator music company.

    • Also, this is a company whose very name is synonymous with nauseating pap. What Muzak doesn’t play, no one will miss. What Muzak does play, everyone wishes they wouldn’t.

    • They played the Jimi Hendrix versionn, the machine gunm drum riffs and screaming bullets guitar didn’t help

    • Wait just a minute there… back in the eighties I was in a restaurant having a coffee when the Muzak perked up my ears. That tune, I know it, shit what is it? As it went along the words finally came to me…………….as they say wait for it…Aqua Lung !!
      Merry Christmas…………….PM

  6. The Democrats and Leftist are suffering from Really Advanced Trump Anxiety Re-election Disorder (RETARD) and they may be triggered by the very mention of the instruments of the Second Amendment when out shopping for tranquilizers or other calming medication. This will cause them to collapse or to curse like they have Tourettes without any notice to the public.

  7. When I sang this with my class in 5th grade we immediately began foaming at the mouth and ran through the streets killing people. Either that or we had a Christmas party I can’t remember precisely. Violent lyrics corrupted my memory.

    • Oh that made me laugh too. I just imagined a bunch of kids singing, “I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”, while wielding meat cleavers and ballbats , clubbing and whacking away ikilling people.

  8. Well, one song down, thousands to go. I won’t be happy until every song plays heavy metal during business hours from November to February.

  9. Full blown censorship the Nazi way, the communistic way or the way any dictatorship would suppress anything they fear will give the people the will to resist them. Resistance is futile, they strive to controll your thoughts.
Resist, Resist, Resist I say, it’s the only way to stay free from oppression.

  10. Thank God they ban some white people music!

    Acceptable lyrics include….

I’m draped up and drip’d out knowutimtalkinbout 3 in da mornin get’n da gat out tha stash spot…

  11. I bet they won’t ban “Rappa Pam Pam” by Junior Reid. That would be super racist and not very multicultural.

“You only got a few days more/
to get the guns you want from da gun store/
on the first day of Christmas guess what Santa bring for me?
    A Glock, a magnum and a rust M3….”

  12. When Meredith Wilson wrote this song, the audience would have clearly understood that “Hopalong boots” was a reference to children’s boots branded as a tie-in to the Hopalong Cassidy Western short features being aired on TV in the late 40s – early 50s. The “ pistol that shoots” was, obviously, a toy cap pistol. The Hoppy shorts were the first Western series aired on TV and were very popular – there was even a Hoppyland amusement park in Venice CA (it wasn’t near as the re-edited movie shorts were on TV).

Meredith Wilson wrote “The Music Man”, still considered The Great American musical, along with the infamous “Chicken Fat” song that so many of us now despised boomers had to suffer through on scratchy institutional record players during gym class. I’m sure the “body shaming” in Chicken Fat would have the pearl clutchers in a self-righteous uproar as well.

    • actually got to see Hoppy in person once…when he rode out on that beautiful white horse…”Topper”, I believe…still have those drinking glasses around here somewhere….

      • “actually got to see Hoppy in person once…”

Received a Hop Along necktie for Christmas one year. It was black, with a printed picture of Hoppy on his horse. Hoppy was dressed in black, and his neck tie was black, with a tiny dot at about the place his picture was located on my actual Hoppy tie. Can remember many nights putting myself to sleep wondering, “What if Hoppy had a picture of Hoppy on his tie, and that picture had a picture of Hoppy on his tie, and that picture had a picture of Hoppy on his tie….. Think I usually didn’t get beyond about twenty iterations of the ever smalller ties and pictures.
