In a bill labelled a “Church Protection Act, the Mississippi legislature appears ready to join the permitless or “Constitutional” carry club. If Governor Bryan signs the bill into law, Mississippi will become the third state this year to join the club, putting its members at 10, or 20 percent of the states . . .
Members of the club range from the East coast to the Pacific, from Alaska to Arizona, with midwest, eastern, and western members. At 10 members, the club is larger than the dwindling “may issue” club, where peoples ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights is subject to the whim of police or other officials.
“Constitutional” carry derives its nomenclature from the state of law at the time that the Bill of Rights, including the Second Amendment, was ratified. At that time no permit for the carry of arms was required, openly or concealed. Current “Constitutional” carry states may vary a little from this ideal; there may be restrictions on minors, felons, and the mentally ill. Hence the more accurate appellation of permitless carry.
Earlier this year, West Virginia and Idaho passed their versions of permitless carry. West Virginia has a “shall issue” law. Idaho already had effective permitless carry over 99 percent of the state, so the transition was a small increment.
The Mississippi transition is also incremental. It’s already legal to carry a firearm in an enclosed container, such as a purse, bag or briefcase. HB 786 passed the House 85-33 on February 17th. It passed the Senate on 29 March, 36 to 14, with an amendment, and has been sent back to the House for concurrence.
The increment used by Representative Gipson [above] show how clever a pro-Second Amendment representative can be. Here is the relevant part of HB 786 (the underlined words would be added to existing law):
(24) No license shall be required under this section for a loaded or unloaded pistol or revolver carried upon the person in a sheath, belt holster or shoulder holster or carried in a purse, handbag, satchel, other similar bag or briefcase or fully enclosed case.
If the pistol is in a holster, no permit will be required. If the pistol is in a purse, bag, case or any container that completely encloses it, no permit is required. If the pistol is openly carried, no permit is required.
So where *is* a permit required? Maybe in a pocket, completely concealed, without a holster? Maybe in a waistband with no holster and a shirt over it? I suspect that representative Gipson may remove those last tiny impediments next session, if this bill becomes law.
In short, if this bill is concurred in the House, then is signed or becomes law, Mississippi will be a permitless carry or “constitutional” carry state.
There are other reforms in the law. As the title suggests, the law “allows” Churches to have some of their members defend them, and grants immunities to church security officers similar to those that police officers have, when they are in the performance of their duties.
The law also would also withdraw state support for executive orders or agency regulations that have not been approved by Congress, and conflict with the State or Federal Constitutions.

So with one stroke of a pen, Mississippi becomes a state I like for one reason and think is batshit retarded for another. The trials of being a pro gun moderate.

He’s referring to the other bill that passed that will allow religious institutions and certain private businesses to discriminate against LGBT patrons if they so choose.
I just want to say, I am not religious, but I am a former business owner and I feel that I should be able to refuse service to any person for any reason. I think that if we keep reaffirming the notion that the government can compel a private business to provide goods or services by force that it will only lead to bad things down the road.
In understand that reasoning, but there’s a line we draw that kind of thinking. Refusing to serve someone because they are LGBTQ is the same as refusing service based on skin color or gender, something that’s been a fight for many people (especially for people I care about among friends and family). Maybe I’m biased about this because I am also not religious, but I don’t understand how swerving someone who loves the same gender they were born as (or wants to act like the opposite gender) violates another person’s beliefs; where in the bible does it say “thou shalt not serve the gays’?
Alternatively, where in the Bible does it say “Thou shalt serve the gays”?
I say if a business owner is foolish enough to refuse good money from those they don’t agree with, they deserve to learn their lesson by being put out of business (or at the very least, they lose business). No laws or government intervention necessary. It’s similar to those of us who refuse to do business with shops that post a sign under the delusion that they can manufacture a gun free zone.
It’s complicated, if you actually believe in “freedom”.
People should be free to believe in whatever religious nonsense they want, they should also be free to pay whatever economic price those beliefs incur.
As a former (and current) business owner, all I care about is the color of your money. My petty trifles about your personal lifestyle mean precisely jack squat- you get to do as you want, as long as it doesn’t negatively impact me and mine.
The part that’s hard for me to square with that belief is that it means people will be discriminated against simply for being a flamer in skinny jeans and acting like a queen. Or for being a couple of raging bulls, who just want a particular wedding photographer.
I guess in the end, there is no free lunch. People of all stripes are discriminated against all the time, the question is whether it becomes part of your yelp reviews, so people actually know that a certain baker doesn’t want to do a lesbian wedding cake, and take their business elsewhere. Let the chips fall and all that.
As far as not “servring gays” in the Bible, are you kidding? It says you are to *kill* them…

A business should have the right to refuse service to a jerk. The argument isn’t about “We don’t want to serve gays.”. There’s nothing stopping a gay couple from picking up a blank cake from a shop. MIssissippi becomes the first Deep South state to legalize permitless carry. It’s funny because I thought there was no way any of the Deep South would do this because of the large population of blacks, but I guess because they framed this as “church protection” the evangelicals jumped into action because they want a safe church.
Someone tell the politicians in ‘Bama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and the Carolinas that their Churches need protection and permitless carry is the way to go. Do this and a lot of states are going to be joining the club.
10 states = 20%? Sir, I have it on good authority that there were 57 states just a few years ago! (SARC!)

Just for the record, the term “homosexual” didn’t appear in the Bible until late in the game — even the original King James version didn’t use it.
As for the word “abomination”, the Hebrew word has nothing to do with morality. The same word covers calamari and prawns, and I don’t see anyone raving about people going to hell for having those for lunch.
BTW, the Bible’s instructions for who to serve include enemies, and the general admonition is to treat others as you would like to be treated. The illustration is the parable of the Good Samaritan — so according to Jesus, the one who loves his neighbor as himself is the one who rescues a gay man who has been beat up by others, pays the man’s medical bills, and makes sure he is fully cared for. I would think that merely serving someone as a customer is included.
BTW #2, Jesus fulfilled the Law — that means He completed all its demands. It no longer has any force, which is why Paul can say that all things are lawful. To cite a ritual requirement from the Old Testament as in force today is to deny the declaration of Christ, “It is finished!”

Business ( public) should serve all all but not be forced to make special accommodations. Unless it is a business that specifically caters service to their particular faith.
Church and you are speaking to Christian Churches, are to love all and all should feel to them as a place of refuge. That said a Christian church or person is not to condone such behavior as the scriptures decree as ” sinful”.

Jesus said Love is the fulfilling of the Law. No longer do you say “thou shalt not”.
If you choose to quote the old law then your teens have already been stoned at the gates for speaking back to you. You have been stoned for wearing two different types of cloth in your garden.
No where in the Bible does it say that you go to hell for another persons sins. So maybe tend your own house. Be without sin and stop worrying about what other people do. It mentions feeding the poor far more in the Book then the mentions of being gay. I know you didn’t make this intolerance up yourself. Someone told you to worry about gays etc.
Since Jesus is version 2.0 I’m listening to him and if I have a doubt I pray for an answer. If I doubt that answer I pray to be clear of any human weakness that would have me hold bias, intolerance or hate over being Loving. Life is not the NFL. I don’t need to be part of a team, tribe or clan or religion or political party or nationality or race to be happy. So I don’t have to find something wrong with another group to feel good about mine.

You tell him to work elsewhere.
We live in a country with people from every nation, race and religion on earth. If you don’t want to serve them then get a different job. No one is making you work where you work.
Say I work at the MVA. What if I didn’t want to issue driver’s licenses to Asians because I have a strongly held belief that they are bad drivers. Do I have the right to not issue those licenses? Yep. But I don’t have a right to work there and manifest that belief. Where is the conservative personal responsibility? If my religion says stripping is wrong do I have a right to work in a strip joint then refuse to do my job? No one is discriminating against me in this case.
If you have a shop open to the public you can’t by law discriminate. If you have a private club you can.

Side question; if a guy comes in asking for a cake, you bake it, he takes it out of the shop and then to a gay wedding, is your religion still harmed? Maybe you wouldn’t know, but wouldn’t god still know you baked a gay cake? Isn’t that what matters?
