It’s hard to believe that anyone would think that a book — any book — would stop a .50 caliber bullet. The idea that two people would consider that a possibility says much about the intelligence of the average human. None of it particularly good. As BuzzFeed reports,

Perez started a YouTube channel in March which aimed to show “the real life of a young couple who happen to be teen parents.”

Perez had uploaded several YouTube videos featuring her and Ruiz, many of which involved doing “pranks,” “stunts,” and “challenges.”

The two aspiring YouTube stars wanted to do something that would get them a lot of traffic. theepochtimes.com has the story . . .

[Monalisa] Perez, who is pregnant, shot at a book that Ruiz was holding against his chest while outside their home. Sheriff Jeremy Thornton said Wednesday said she’ll remain in jail and will be connected by video to a Norman County court proceeding on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Minnesota Star-Tribune.

In the clip, Ruiz and Perez, who fired a .50 caliber Desert Eagle pistol at him, wanted to see if the bullet would go through the book he was holding, according to the complaint.

Mr. Ruiz was a Darwin Award waiting to happen . . .

“We called him our little daredevil,” said Lisa Primeau, who is the aunt of Ruiz, adding that she “pretty much raised” him after his mother died when he was 9.

Ruiz, she said, is always chasing an adrenaline rush and put “a dangerous twist on everything he did.” That included “jumping into the swimming pool from the top of the house, no hesitation. He was a crazy driver with go-carts.” . . .

Ruiz, meanwhile, “had plenty of guns. He liked guns,” Primeau said.

“He had told me about that idea,” the aunt added, “and I said, ‘Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Why are you going to use a gun? Why?’ “

She quoted him as telling her: “‘Because we want more viewers. We want to get famous.’ “

Mr. Ruiz won’t be able to enjoy the fame he’s finally achieved. It isn’t known if his pregnant girlfriend is enjoying her notoriety, but she’ll have plenty of time to watch it fade from behind prison bars.

      • “Too late; he had already spread his [defective] seed.”

        100% correct.

For some reason, that concept is difficult for folks to understand.

        Every stupid-assed death is not a Darwin…

        • Actually, as it removes his ability to reproduce in the future, it does qualify him for a Darwin award. Just because you’ve reproduced once doesn’t mean selection is no longer active. He could have had 9 kids, now he can’t. I’m sorry to hear this guy died, but GD that is really stupid…

        • Not a Darwin Award, but an honorable mention. That child growing inside Perez has Ruiz’s DNA, and can go forth and spread that seed.

    • I still argue that to win a Darwin Award one must be removed from the gene pool (by death or sterilization) prior to procreating. Since he already had a kid and another on the way I’m calling a DQ.

      • People on Ruiz’ end of the socio-economic spectrum rarely stop with a single offspring. He would certainly have produced more if he had the chance.

This fits with Darwin’s theory that the “less fit,” even if they reproduce, will reproduce less.

        You can’t fix stupid.

    • Meanwhile there are probably plenty of videos on YouTube already that show IF a desert eagle 50 can shoot though books….

  1. Wait. Teens and a DEagle? WTF? “He had plenty of guns” ? ? ?

Auntie raised the dead kid when his mom died when the boy was 9? Did his mom try Niagara Falls or jumping the Snake River or something?

    • Just because you own the most powerful semi-auto handgun in the world doesn’t mean you’re the sharpest knife in the drawer.

And along those lines there are stories about grown men who should have known better allowing men to stab their bullet-resistant vests and subsequently dying from the puncture wound.
As with this (deceased) logic-deficient individual, you’d think they would give it a test run with a non-human backstop before yelling “Hey, y’all, watch this!”

Although I think this one should go on the record books as suicide. If either of them, or even both together, had an IQ greater than the caliber of the pistol they should have known this was not a survivable situation.

  2. I’ve seen many calibers perform beyond my expectations on many different materials in person and on video. One of the ones I recall was a Top Gear episode where they decide to reinforce their car doors as they drove through Iraq by filling them with sand. Then they had one of their bodyguards shoot at the car door with the muzzle barely a foot away. Not only did it go through the steel door, the sand, out the other side of the door but it also penetrated completely through to the other side.

That was a 9mm. I don’t think a .50AE would be impeded much by paper. And why oh why they didn’t at least have the smarts to test this before holding it in front of them we can only guess.

Only a crazy person would ever think it’s okay to be on the business end of a gun.

    • One report I read said that he showed her a book that he had shot at previously, and the bullet didn’t go through.

      • And here we see demonstrated that a little knowledge can indeed be a dangerous thing.

A free-standing or hanging book that can fly backwards when a bullet hits it (dissipating some of the energy to the entire book) can indeed “stop” a bullet that a well-supported book (say, held tightly against a torso) cannot stop.

This concept is publicly available in the writings about testing of bullet-resistant vests, where a free-hanging vest will stop pistol bullets of a much higher penetrative ability than a vest affixed to a soft/pliable human-torso-like backing, with the opposite also being true; a vest tightly attached to a hard backer like wood or metal will often allow a bullet that it SHOULD stop to penetrate, due to the shearing effect on the vest material’s fibers when compressed between the bullet and the hard backing material.

        • Good point. This is why you sometimes see ranges that use those thick hanging sheets of rubber. A bullet would otherwise go straight through if the sheet was taut, or flat, or against a wall. Instead, because they hang with nothing close behind you have handgun bullets hit them and then drop straight down.

    • They didn’t test it before hand because, as we all know, it is easier to get a gun in the hood than to get a book, so they didn’t want to waste one of those hard to get books.

      • More information please?
Was it “Dreams of my Father”?
        or
“It takes a village to raise a child”?

        • Depends on what you mean by thick. Are we going by page count or the thickheadedness of the author’s ghostwritten ruminations?

  3. I’ve been reading about this with interest it being my home state. I came upon a good number of commenters on media sites like the Minneapolis Star Tribune that seemed to think that she had “suffered enough” and would be bearing the guilt for the rest of her life. And I couldn’t help but wonder if the same sympathy would have been offered up if it had been the woman holding the book.

    • No, it would not be the same, he would be crucified in all corners of the media, and honestly I would be right there too. I guess I’m one of those “benevolent sexists” because it just hurts me when I hear about a woman being hurt or killed by violent means. It’s like in the movie G.I. Jane where Demi Moore is giving Vigo Mortensen that speech about women in combat, “does it hurt more when a woman is killed? Is it more tragic? Blah blah” and my answer to each of those questions was yes, yes it does. I have problems with women in combat not for any reason relating to their ability to do the job (in some cases better than men) but just because I fucking hate women being hurt.

      • God has given to women the role of motherhood. It’s our job as husbands and fathers to protect them so that they can fulfill that role.

Your feelings make complete sense to me.

        • It is all of our roles to defend our family members whether we are female or male and women are certainly meant for a lot more than just being mothers or wives. I certainly think you’d need a lot of help if you were to harm my family while my wife was on watch. She’s not one to back down from defending herself, our kids, etc.

      • I don’t feel differently depending upon which gender gets injured or killed.

My problem with women in combat (or im the police or fire departments) is that they are never held to the same standards. Sure, there are some tmwho are as qualified or more so than some of the men who serve. However, that’s irrelevant. What matters is that the standards for women candidates is always lower for women than men.

They adjust the standards downward because women are usually incapable of competing with men on the same terms. The problem is, the real world doesn’t give a damn about gender. You must perform to real world levels, or else you put yourself and others in danger.

If feminists and their cuck enablers really believe that women are oh so qualified, then why set two different standards? Why not treat everyone equally and judge them by the same standards?

It’s all these lovey dovey types who whine “everyone deserves a chance…..” Maybe, maybe not, but that’s not the same thing as everyone deserves to have the rules rigged in their favor so they can win.

        • The counter-argument I heard was that during the Iraq War there was basically no standards for the Army. Men with multiple criminal convictions or were completely incapable of performing their duties were being waivered all over the place and competency as a whole dropped during that time, while women who could meet their own set standards that exceeded the incompetent mens were being shuffled around and not actually given their choice assignments.

If the US is going to have multiple wars going on at the same time, we’re at some point going to have to bring more women into this to make-up for the shortfalls the men are having.

      • “Whenever women have insisted on absolute equality with men, they have invariably wound up on the dirty end of the stick. What they are and what they can do makes them superior to men, and their proper tactic is to demand special privileges, all the traffic will bear. They should never settle merely for equality. For women, ‘equality’ is a disaster.” Robert A. Heinlein – “The Notebooks of Lazarus Long” from “Time Enough for Love”

    • Her supporters need to come up with a rallying cry, like maybe “Natural Selection is not a Crime!”.

Really, he set up a stunt, and asked her to be his assistant. I don’t see where anybody but him is responsible for his committing stupidicide.

  4. They were a lovely UNeducated couple. It would have taken either one of them 30 seconds to find Youtube videos showing various bullet calibers being shot through different types of barriers.

  5. oh Christ he was holding the book in front of him?! When I first heard this I assumed it was an ND and they intended to shoot the book without anyone near it.

I also assumed the book was like one of those 10 inch thick dictionaries from back before the internet existed. Jesus I wouldn’t even do this with a 22, it’s just inviting disaster.

  6. It takes particular brand of idiocy to coerce younger woman into destroying three lives. But then, a few of social media images of late Mr.Ruiz fit the big picture just fine…

    Sad about the child.

  7. You know that baby is going to grow up to be pillar of the community…

Yep, I foresee the Mr/Miss Congeniality award for the meth-head trailer park in its future.

  8. I am kind of an empathetic fellow, but I don’t have any sympathy for those that engage is such stupidity. However, I suspect that prison for her would be a waste of money. If she is only going to shoot another consenting moron she is hardly a danger to society.

    • Yeah, that’s my conservative economy take on it as well. It’s gonna cost well over a million bucks to incarcerate her, and that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Like hardening the electric grid against solar storms or a deliberate EMP attack on this country.

But, no, society demands their pound of flesh…

    • No, she’s too stupid to live among us. She cannot be trusted with a gun. She cannot be trusted without a custodian. Isn’t that what the POTG say all the time? Well, now she gets what she needs.

There is no telling what future idiocy and damage she’ll inflict on society and her offspring. By her past actions, she has demonstrated that she lacks all judgment to conduct herself reasonably.

  9. Lol. I can’t even feel bad. What an idiot. They really thought a book was gonna stop the .50 AE? Darwinism at it’s best.

  10. Her Face bears some of the marks of FAS I Wonder if booze was a factor in her mothers death when she was 9?
where do kids like this find the cash to even buy an expensive pistol like the DE .50?

    • The article says that it was his mother who died, not hers.

Now I’m starting to doubt your ability to diagnose developmental birth defects from Youtube video screenshots.

  11. Apart from ballistic ignorance, there’s a serious failure of risk/reward analysis here. If you believe your encyclopedia will stop a .50 AE at point blank range, and you’re right you gain… a certain number of YouTube viewers. If you’re wrong, you’re DRT, leaving your girlfriend in prison and your children parentless.

    • Poorly educated or low IQ people do not have your superior reasoning ability. The bigger threat to us is that those people easily receive a vehicle drivers license.

      • Actually, the even bigger, long-term threat is that such morons breed. Often quite prolifically.

The movie Idiocracy was supposed to be a cautionary tale, not a how-to guide.

        • I was just thinking of President Camacho…

President Camacho: Now I understand everyone’s shit’s emotional right now. But I’ve got a 3 point plan that’s going to fix EVERYTHING.
Congressman #1: Break it down, Camacho!
President Camacho: Number 1: We’ve got this guy Not Sure. Number 2: He’s got a higher IQ than ANY MAN ALIVE. and Number 3: He’s going to fix EVERYTHING.

reminds me of the current resident of 1500 Pennsylvania Ave.

  12. Hold it, they were doing a dangerous gun stunt to get rich on Youtube?

I thought Youtube’s revenue policy was something like “if your video has guns in it, we don’t have to pay you anything for the views it generates”.

    • My guess is the geniuses involved here didn’t read that far into the Yootoobe terms of service agreement.

      • I suspect that they’d have done better reading books rather than testing their anti-ballistic properties. Considering the evidence before us, I also suspect that reading comprehension wasn’t a strong suit for either of these two.

I was discussing this with my wife a bit ago, and she asked, in a round about way, if there were anything I’d be willing to stand behind and take a round…she meant it rhetorically, but I answered affirmatively: There is something behind which I’d be willing to take a hit from a .50 AE…if I had a compelling reason to do so (and I do mean compelling), my rifle plates. Even at that though, and knowing that penetration and blunt force trauma are completely off the table with such armor, spall, spatter and fragmentation are a problem, and while unlikely, may result in pretty serious wounds.

I’ve often said that there is usually a smart way to do a dumb thing, and somethings, properly done aren’t nearly as risky as they might seem, but the corollary is then that there are dumb ways to do smart things, making them dangerous, and certainly there are dumb ways to do dumb, dangerous things making them more than risky, making them more likely than not to cause serious injury or death, as we see here.

Was there a safer way to do what they attempted? Of course, there are a plethora of ways this could have been accomplished that were unlikely to result in serious injury, rendering this stunt merely risky, rather than nearly suicidally dangerous.
However, and this is key; The minds that could have conceived of and carried off this stunt without injury are unlikely to be desirous of doing so, and those with the desire to do these things seldom have the sort of mind that would allow them to safely carry it off. This is no mystery: stupid people who refuse to acknowledge the fact of their condition frequently enough fall prey to thier own stupidity, so it is, and will always be.

  13. And another thought.. where did this 22-year old father of two kids get the money to buy a Desert Eagle? The likely answer is that some other UNeducated person loaned him the gun for use in the stunt.

    • I was kind of wondering about that myself. Pistol was described as a gold-plated .50AE Desert Eagle. That’s not cheap, probably around $1400 used or near $2k new, with ammo around $1.50-$2 a shot…

  14. Wow. Maybe there should be a basic mental competence test for gun ownership after all…

What will her crime be? Negligent homicide? Manslaughter? Probably not murder since he wanted her to do it and she didn’t think she was going to hurt or kill him.

  15. Well I guess the young FORMER couple never perused Mythbusters. I believe in micro-evolution. Winners?Where did the tarded teen get “lotsa’ guns”?!?

    • Apparently he bought them with all the money he had left over after supporting a family of 3 on the paycheck of a low-seniority railroad worker.

  16. Here’s a f-tard with a knocked up girlfriend with whom he already had one kid, screwing around doing stupid shit with a Desert Eagle. Why does someone like this even own an expensive, ridiculous gun like a Desert Eagle? Because he saw it in a video game and thought it was cool. Three more dependent mouths for the rest of us to feed, provide shelter, and healthcare.

And people wonder why Trump got elected. This is why Trump got elected.

      • If the collective US IQ was a little higher, we might end up with better options to pick from than just Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump… I thought we were scraping the bottom of the barrel with Bush and Gore, but it turns out there was a whole other barrel of shit buried under that one.

    • I’m honestly not trying to be contentious by asking Wiregrass, but what does this incident have to do with a presidential election?

I’m neither attempting to be intentionally obtuse nor pleading ignorance to make a point, and I consider myself a fairly creative thinker, but I can’t fathom what relevance this has to presidential politics.

      Could you explain?

      • There was a time in this country, at least it is my perception, that people weren’t quite as stupid as they are now. Like I said this is my perception, maybe they were, but I wasn’t aware of it. I think there are a lot of other people that share this perception. It is hard to put in words but we seem to be so transfixed on really trivial aspects of life because we are so worried about equal treatment and not offending anyone that we’re not teaching them important shit like everyday physics. I mean how do you get to reproductive age without figuring out this is a bad idea? That there is more to life than views on Youtube? I don’t even remember being taught stuff like this was a bad idea. Are people losing basic instincts for survival? Are we breeding it out of them? I thing people have witnessed this getting worse and without knowing what to do about it, they want things to be the way they were before. Before crazy and stupid became a protected class. Clinton showed no signs of doing anything to change that course. And now Trump is proving that he personally isn’t a change in the current trend, but he certain sold himself as a reversal back to a time when people had some walking around sense. And people desperately longing for that elected him.

  17. Suicide all over this story. Gay boy gets girlfriend pregnant, already traumatized by the death of mother, who knows where the father is, can’t handle living a lie.

    • Traumatized by the death of his mother, he decides to orchestrate a ridiculous way to get someone else to kill him thirteen years later?

Occam’s Razor, dude: the kid was an idiot. Stupidity isn’t always fatal, but when it is, it’s often quite messy.

  18. Geez, I was just going to try this with my DE .50 in the backyard. Maybe I’ll get someone else to hold the book.

    • I think if he had been the type to read through War And Peace, he wouldn’t have needed a ballistic shield.

  19. Stupid is as stupid does! Gee seeing as a .22LR will almost penetrate a 1966 Seattle phone book wonder how come the Puny .50 cal penetrated a book, must of been a thin book! wonder if they are Democrat? looks and sounds like some of their prodigy ( Not married, Not employed, new Democrat maker, free housing, food stamps free medical,) oh well! Must have been a gun control nut and believed all the propaganda about Ar’s being the real killers and that any book will stop a pistol bullet

  20. suicide in my book. no need to bill taxpayers to keep her behind bars and subsidize foster care for their child.

  21. There are no words for this level of stupidity/ignorance. Well, maybe pwrsergs arguments for mandatory vaccines comes close…

  22. I was 24 working as mechanic when I bought Desert Eagle from my snap on guy . So not impossible. Why would I own one? Same reason most people like fire works. Big Boom. It is unfortunate this guy or his girlfriend had no common sense.

  23. What in the Wide wide World of Sports? This is a about as dumb an idea as that kid going to North Korea to steal a poster. Sad the gun has a higher IQ than the users.

  24. Stupid Lives Matter. To be seen on signs at your next local riot/car burning. Will celebrities come out and admit being stupid? Maybe Trump will finally admit his true IQ. Even Forrest Gump wasn’t this dumb.

  25. he had plenty of guns but apparently didn’t do much testing. Id have thought before he took one in the chest through his copy of “Janet & Mark go to lunch hall” he’d have done a few “test shots” and noticed, “Hmmmm, I seem to be blowing holes though these books with great regularity. Perhaps I should not do this video”

  26. If he really wanted to “see” if his .50 caliber Desert Eagle would penetrate the book he was holding, shouldn’t he have been holding it in front of his face and not his chest?

  27. So, what was the title anyway? Red Badge of Courage may be appropriate, but it is a very thin book. War and Peace may have had a better chance of stopping the round.

  28. I did an experiment years ago just for fun. I fired into books and measured the penetration results. Here are my results:
    1) .22, subsonic, Remington
    Harrington and Richardson 622

  29. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?

My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping
it up all over the internet without my authorization. Do you know any ways
to help protect against content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.
