At her speech in Chicago [above], the President’s wife addressed the thorny issue of gun control. Michelle Obama called for the City’s politicians to remove barriers to gun ownership in general and concealed carry in specific. “For too long, the government has denied Illinois residents their natural, human right to armed self-defense . . . We need to send a clear message to criminals preying on the weak and the innocent that they will no longer be unopposed by right-thinking God-fearing people. That the people of this city, people of this state, refuse to be victims. We need to give honest law-abiding citizens the tools they need to take back their cities, their towns and their neighborhoods from criminals with no respect for law, decency or the value of human life. And we need to make sure that the courts lock up these violent criminals and throw away the key.” And then I woke up.

  1. “My husband and I will continue to exploit those victims of gun violence that make the most sense. These include school children, preferably middle to upper middle class white kids, movie goers, and other innocent bystanders caught in gang crossfire. We’ll ignore those victims who happen to be male, black or hispanic and affiliated with a gang. Their numbers are too great to count much less care and may call into question decades of progressive politics. We ask that you not talk about those people.”

  2. My jaw dropped, my heart began to race with joy, and then you yanked the rug out from under me. Way to ruin my day! At least you should have included a pic of an Israeli model. LOL

  3. More like, We can do better, you have given up homes, jobs/employment opportunities, endured racial discrimination & now we ask you to give up your lives so that a misunderstood minority criminal can live to be a pillar of society. This is the decent thing to do. I don’t have a cherry tree, lol, Randy

  4. Here’s the real version: “We must continue to make the people of Chicago victims – victims of crime, political corruption, a horrible education system – because without low-information voters like yourselves, Barack and I wouldn’t be in the White House. So we’re going to take your guns away, keep electing corrupt politicians and extravagantly fund teachers unions. And do not, under any circumstances, pay attention to any media that aren’t liberal.”

  5. “Mrs. Obama then proudly displayed an AR-15 and shouted ‘Molon Labe!’ A phrase popular with violent right wing extremists.”

  6. Chicago is over run with crime on the south side, despite having some of the highest level of gun control in the nation and a complete ban on concealed carry. I wonder how many cops and secret service with “high capacity” magazines were protecting her while she made her pretty speech. The message: children are valuable (mine are protected 24/7 by armed secret service), but guns kill children and therefore you (who we rule) do not need guns. Because, after all, its for the children.

  7. The thing I don’t get is why, when you elect someone, the point of view of his wife (or her husband, that could happen.. ) has any meaning at all.
No one voted for her, but for her husband..

Maybe it’s because I’m from Europe that I don’t get that but I can’t see a prime minister putting his wife in front to get speeches and telling how people should live their lives..

    • Welcome to the politics of the idiot Democrat voter, who votes with her/his emotions and not his/her brain.

“WOW! Her bangs are wonderful! I’m gonna vote for Barack!”

  8. Son of a GUN!! I was starting to watch but turned it off, got this from ttag.unbelievable!I don’t think McCarthy and his buddies are about to do what she is asking though…it would be a good thing for chigaoans to be able to protect themselves!!

  9. The crux of her thinking is @ 10:20 – 10:22. She is not entirely wrong – resources do matter. However, intangibles matter more. Chicago did not get to where it is at now do to a lack of resources. And it is sad and laughable to expect it to one day become a model for other communities. America’s inner cities are the recipients of more charity, both private and public, than most places on earth. Yet, their failings are monstrous and apparent. Poverty is both a symptom and a cause. America is spiritually sick and the war zone that is Chicago is but one symptom of that. Is dad ever coming home?

    • David, I agree.

Taking away the people’s right to bear arms is no more of a solution than is putting even MORE guns (aka tools which give their users the power to kill) on the streets in the hands of “law abiding citizens.” Both proposed “solutions” address symptoms, not root causes, and in addressing the symptoms, both of these simple-minded responses (“we need LESS guns” — “no, we need MORE guns”) actually exacerbate the root causes.

      • I am going to go ahead and apologize for using the term “simple minded” to refer to the twin philosophies of “more guns = less crime” and “more guns = more crime.” I don’t mean to offend anyone. They are both logical in their own way (and more complex than four words separated by an equals sign), but both, in my humble opinion, lack creativity.

  10. Wow Robert. You could write speeches for pro gun candidates. It’s a shame none of them would actually believe in any of it though.

  11. And on a completely unrelated note from the People’s Republic of Illinois:

“A bill to register gold and silver coins: It had to come. It has been introduced in Illinois, the most anti-gun state in the USA. … Creates the Precious Metal Purchasing Act (SB3144). Provides that a person who is in the business of purchasing precious metal shall obtain a proof of ownership, create a record of the sale, and verify the identity of the seller. Provides that a person who is in the business of purchasing precious metal shall not pay for the precious metal in cash and shall record the method of payment. Requires the purchaser to keep a record of the sale for one year or, if the purchase amount is over $500, for 5 years. Provides that a person who violates the Act is guilty of a petty offense and subject to a fine not exceeding $500. Provides that the Attorney General may inspect records, investigate an alleged violation, and take action to collect civil penalties.” − TeaPartyEconomist.com

Any bets on how soon Obama will copy this idea?

  12. Yeah, I was really confused until I got to the end. I was wondering if maybe she caught O cheating on her or something.

  14. Bastard. You had me going there, or a bit. I thought she was maybe going to go into a spiel about no Big Black Guns with zillion-round “clips” and “enhanced” background checks, but by gum a chicken in every pot and a pistol in every pocket.

“And then I woke up.” Bastard. 😉
