Its official: the panic buying has begun. With the threat of an assault weapons ban and movement on the U.N. arms treaty, gun owners are stocking up on things that they’re concerned will be banned shortly. One of my sources in the firearms retail world says that his distributor has sold over 3,000 Surefire High Capacity Magazines since Tuesday’s election. Asked what the normal volume for those items are, he replied that, “We hardly sell them at all.” No doubt due to the rather high price tag. But in the wake of the election, price seems to be no object. Stay tuned as we cover the best thing to happen to firearms sales since the Civil War.

  1. And once again, all you’re doing is driving up the prices for no reason, just like four years ago.

    I’m glad I reload and I’m glad I don’t have anything chambered in .223.

Sorry to be all pedantic, Nick, but the phrase is “price is no object” not “option”. Price is always an option.

  2. I don’t see the financial sense of running out the day after the election and stocking up on over priced widgets. I’m sure Difi and her dem buddies learned from the last AWB and they won’t leave the loopholes from the last one. It will no doubt be permanent and I wouldn’t be a bit shocked to see a demand for the surrender of those “evil” devices.

Unless you’re willing to fight in the streets to avoid surrendering your “assault weapons” and the hi cap mags I see this as a wasted exercise.

Wonder if they’ll want the stripper clips for my Mosin?

  3. “Asked what the normal volume for those items are, he replied that “We hardly sell them at all.”

Then why stock them? Most retailers can and do turn to several distributors to find a hardly purchased product.

  4. National Reciprocity has the same odds of passing as DiFi’s AWB bill, namely almost none. That established it doesn’t mean Big Zero can’t enact “common sense” executive orders which make life harder for gun owners. Nothing so crazy as an AWB could be enacted by White House fiat, but an onerous Federal sales tax on 10+ round magazines sold after Date X could be an option.

    • You cannot impose a tax by executive order. A new tax must pass Congress and originate in the House of Representatives. That is not going to happen. If you really believe that the President can do all this by executive fiat you more to worry about than guns. If Obama tries to turn dictator he will at best a civil war or more likely end up like Salvatore Allende.

  5. It makes more sense to just stock up on 20 and 30 rounders. Unless you have a registered full auto, having this 60 or 100 rounder does not make a whole lot of sense to me; I would rather have couplers and have two 30 rounders tethered together. But that is just me.

  6. I have two of the 60rnders already and a 100rnder. just bought 4 more 60s. I paid normal price. Figured, the won’t be easy to find soon.

  7. One of the largest gun stores in the southeast yesterday double the price on non-windowed p-mags, from 15 to 30 bucks apiece. Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, Ga. should be highly ashamed of themselves.

    • TTAG should call out / expose the price gougers. F**k those bastards. I’m still banning certain gun shops from 4 years ago when they sold bricks of .22 ammo for $80 bucks.

        • If you don’t shop around, then who is to blame? The market dictates pricing. With online shopping, it is quite difficult to corner a market unless there are extreme shortages.

In which case, those that planned and have the inventory can charge whatever they want. Its called a Free market. Of course you can always remember who gouged in tough times and let your wallet do the talking.

    • I stopped shopping at Adventure Outdoors a long time ago. They rarely had good prices for anything, especially guns. Go to Georgia Gun Store in Gainesville if you want to buy a gun.

  8. Wonder if anyone makes a 10-round follower block for these yet? 🙂

Related: Every guns-and-parts site I visited last night was 100% sold out of 5.56/.223 AR15 stripped lower receivers. While I plan to check in with my local gun store to see if they have any in stock, I’ll probably wait a bit for the hysteria to die down before I complete a purchase.

    • Word.

Also: stock up on primers even if you defer on other components. I’ve been reading archived forum discussions on reloading going as far back as 2002, and primers are very susceptible to supply constraints. They’re also relatively inexpensive… When you can get them.

PS: thanks for your support in that other thread, Aharon.

  9. Just bought a PSA stripped lower for $99. 5 M3 pmags $14 each and 2 G19 mags $25 each from Palmetto State Armory

  10. Note to CA residents: read up on magazine parts kits. There are more than a few vendors who will break down mags into parts kits so they’re legal to buy and possess in CA.

  11. I’d like to stock up on guns, ammo, magazines, etc but my taxes are so high I don’t have enough money left over to buy any of that stuff.

    • You must live in France, because if you lived and worked in America for the last ten years, you would still be under the Bush era tax cuts, and for the last two years, you’ve paid two % less in Payroll taxes under Obama. Or maybe, you just have a lousy tax man!

      • I consider inflation a tax. Borrowing trillions over the last 4 years has cut the value of the dollar in half. Don’t believe me go compare a grocery bill from 4 years ago and see how much everything has gone up.

        Thanks
        Robert

        • robert youre absolutely correct. Inflation is indeed a tax. It amazes me that any politician in washington can say with a straight face that inflation is “only 2%”. They promise! why would they lie to you?

Actually is is optimistically at 6% and realistically over 10%.

  12. should have stocked up when bush was in office….

like i have said before, gun owners. you need to be proactive, not reactive!!! (slaps hand!)

Ill sleep well tonight, knowing my magazines are in plentiful supply. Perhaps If I feel like making 500 bucks in the next year or two, ill sell a combloc drum AK mag.

  13. I can’t get any of the Surefire’s here in Ohio but I did buy 10 gen3 pmags. And five more 20 rounders from RRA for my LAR-8. Btw, other than DSA I couldn’t find FAL mags aaanyyyywhere.

I understand that it was panic buying but, being proud of abstaining from panicing won’t really do me any good if something does get banned.
