Talking on the Rachel Maddow show, Senator John Morse of Colorado stated that his approach to constituents who are trying to contact him about current gun control legislation, and the advice he’s giving his fellow senators, is to ignore them. That, rather than have a conversation and debate your opinion with the people who you represent, you should ignore them and “do what [you] need to do.” And now his constituents are trying to recall him.
Our betters know what is good for us. So much so that they MUST ignore our opinions so that they can push through a part of their progressive agenda. /sarc

Ridiculous on its face. What does the guy think his job is? These people aren’t chosen as leaders, they are chosen as representatives. Nobody really cares what their opinion is. They should just vote the will of their district. You know, represent them and all.
They actually “work” for us…as in, they are to do what WE the people think to be true and correct that which affects us the most…..they are an “elected official” not God.

The headline is misleading, I feel. Morse doesn’t say to ignore the opinions of his constituents — he acknowledges them in this clip.
The awful part is Morse (wrongly) thinks his constituents have faulty thinking and are wrong in their conclusion that second amendment rights are being ‘abridged’…basically “They don’t know what they are talking about and I’m tired of reading the same faulty logic garbage over and over”. He reads “Don’t take away my constitutional rights” and thinks “Well, I’m not! Delete!”.

That is constitutionally correct up until the 17th Amendment came around and messed that up. Senators were originally supposed to represent the interest of the State, not be a representative of the People, but the 17th Amendment makes the Senate a body of “Super Representatives”.

For all the Colorado folks who are understandably in various stages of despair and are now thinking about leaving the state, a plea.
Please do not abandon your great state. Please stay and fight. They may have won this battle, but the tide of the war is still on our side.
Remember our recent legislative victories. Consider the wave of concealed carry and castle doctrine laws that have swept the nation. Consider the fate of the cornerstone federal anti-gun legislation introduced this year. Consider how your brothers are pushing back in New York.
This is just a setback, and one that we can overcome if you stay and fight.
If we abandon the front lines, the enemy will only try to push the lines further.
It is right and necessary that Magpul abandons your state, but please stay and fight. Ensure that these legislators are not re-elected. Ensure that these laws are repealed.
I don’t have a vote in Colorado, Minnesota, or New York, but you can bet that I have and will continue to send financial support for the fight as long as there are people who remain to fight.
Simply waiting to not re-elect them may be too late. We need Constitutional lawyers to challenge the constitutionality of these rediculous bills they attempt to pass! We need to take the fight to them, not remain passive-aggressive!

Morse isn’t completely wrong… A big reason we have representatives is to insulate the government from the mob-rule aspect of direct democracy. Remember, it was a democracy that sentenced Socrates to death for thinking.
Unfortunately, he’s using that as an excuse for hacking holes in his constituents’ Constitutional rights.
He make perfect sense. Many Second Amendment supporters who think opposition to gun control is at the top of their agenda have revealed by their voting patterns that it is not. Other issues like drug legalization and gay marriage seem to be bigger determinants of Libertarian oriented voters than a politicians views on gun control. On the other side of the political spectrum free stuff is more important than guns.

To the exact extent that Senators AND Representatives AND the President absolutely MUST honor their oath to defend and uphold the constitution, it is absolutely correct that they MUST ignore their constituents. Even if EVERYONE wants them to pass laws that violate the Constitution, they must not.
