Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the murder of John Lennon. The author of one of the worst songs in the history of western music (as well as a number of very good ones) was walking home on a Monday evening in New York City with his wife in 1980 when Holden Caulfield wanna-be Mark David Chapman emptied a .38 revolver into him at close range.

Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, a noted musician herself, commemorated the anniversary of the murder yesterday by calling for — you guessed it — more gun control laws. It’s apparently escaped her over the last four decades that her husband was shot to death while walking in the city with the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

If Ono really wanted to do something about “gun violence” in America, we have a few suggestions that would actually make a difference. First, she could campaign against the policies of people like New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and their efforts to defund police departments. She could lobby demagogues like New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who helped make zero bail criminal release laws a reality and let suspects continue to prey on the innocent.

It’s wrong-headed, reflexively anti-gun politicians such as these who make it harder and more expensive for law-abiding citizens to avail themselves of their Second Amendment rights, letting them protect themselves and their families.

But someone with Yoko Ono’s considerable means could do much more than just lobby. We’d like to see her financially support the good work of organizations that support Americans’ civil rights. Organizations like the Firearms Policy Coalition, Gun Owners of America, and the Second Amendment Foundation.

These operations are busy filing lawsuits around the country and forcing cities, counties and states to respect citizens’ gun rights…something that makes it easier for people to defend themselves and their families at a time when governments are cutting back on law enforcement, opening their jails and refusing to prosecute many crimes.

We’d guess that Ono is also blissfully unaware of the number of crimes that are actually prevented with the use of firearms every year…serious crimes like assaults, robberies, rapes and murders. These defensive actions dwarf the number of people who are killed by guns each year. And most of these defensive gun uses happen without anyone pulling a trigger. Surely that’s a cause a peace-loving individual like Yoko can get behind.

So let’s hope the octogenarian Ono sees the light and supports such a good cause in her dotage…a cause like gun rights and equal access to armed self defense for the average person. We’d even buy a ticket to one of her performances if it benefits the cause of the right to keep and bear arms.

  1. “Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the murder of John Lennon. The author of one of the worst songs in the history of western music…”

Damn, Lennon was the one that wrote ‘We Built This City’ ?

    Yeeech… 🙁

  2. They could lock up prisoners and subject them to her singing. Really if you know that crime was going to subject you to this would you do it?

  3. First of all, there is no such thing as gun violence. Violent people use guns, fists knives and other things to harm others. No guns kill anyone without a an operator.
Second of all the worst song ever written is MacArthur Park.

    • The Richard Harris version is the worst. He was drunk when he did it and kept calling it MacArthur’s park instead of MacArthur. Next would be Jimmy Webbs own rendition of his tune, truly painful. I’m rather partial to Donna Summers’ version because at least she could sing.

      • No, the worst song ever was “Seasons In The Sun” by one-hit-wonder Terry Jacks..

The only thing missing from her “performance” was duct tape and a banana..

        • But the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes rendition of “Seasons in the Sun” is extremely awesome.

Anything can be good with enough punk rock guitar, Hawaiian shirts, and long sideburns.

        • the only way most of those songs are tolerable is covered by a garage band.
          their “sweet caroline” nails it.
i asked the kwar vet mailman if touching a ten year old wasn’t a little creepy. he stood up and screamed, with his outstretched palm (pantomiming pressing to glass), “not touching like that, touching like this!” i think i ruined the song for him.

      • Look at the fawning admiration and applause afterwards. They must pump hallucinogenics into the air there. I would have called 911 to report someone was having a seizure.

  4. She has nothing going other than what was. She’s trying to stay relevant like all the other idiots who had their short lived fame, like that D.B. David Hogg.

    • What was she, exactly? Oh – some famous guy’s wife? Hmmph. That gives her about the same credibility as the old woman living in my house. She’s somebody’s wife too!

  5. Truly one of the worst. She’s incredibly wealthy though land deals she made so she’s one of the .1% who likes to Lord it over the rest of us while pretending to be this bohemian woman of virtue.

    Utterly despicable.

  6. The way I heard it all those years ago was that when he was confronted with a gun john took off, leaving yoko on her own.

john was a hypocrite about wealth. He was always putting the wealthy down while enjoying the perks money brought. george carlin was a lot like that.

  7. If my memory is still serving me on a historical note. Mrs Ono’s apartment in New York City was invaded by a fan who repelled down a rope, from the roof of the building into her apartment. Where she ran and hid in the closet of her bedroom. hoping the police would show up in her 40(?) story building.

She was lucky the fan only wanted to have a nice chat with her. And perhaps an autograph.

      • in her case it would be “repelled.”
i’m surprised julian and sean don’t have shiny green carapaces.
setting the clock back an hour in 2020 is like getting a yoko bonus track.
and of course, “…lives off of dead beetles.”

  8. From this “performance”, Ono exhibited her one and only talent was getting Lennon to marry her. Otherwise, she is a totally-untalented nobody.

  9. And in today’s edition of Random People Trumpists Feel Entitled to Handouts From we have… well bless my soul, a music-wife from the 70’s. Makes sense, she was probably all over the TV last time any of you formed a new memory.

  10. Yoko Uno who? Lennon’s wife? Well neither of them mattered very much. It was a shame he was murdered, but no more than any other human. I’m sure John would agree. As an aside, in a layman’s opinion, she was a poor musician.

    • Poor musician is a complement. Don’t ever listen to the B side of “Cold Turkey (which is actually a pretty good song poorly mixed and produced)

“Don’t worry Kyoto (Mummy’s only looking for her hand in the snow)”.

I’ve listened to some really obscure yard sale vinyl, but that possibly is one of the least talented thing ever pressed that I’ve heard. I think Mark David Chapman must have gotten confused about which one was his target.

  11. “Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
    A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

Just imagine the world of shit that would rain down from “Lennn Inc.” if you
tried to freely share with the world the possessions (music) of Lennon Inc.

What a crock of shit that song was.

  12. I wonder why Ono did not sue charter arms for making the gun that killed Lennon? Or why any of the victims families did not sue charter arms for making the revolver that the Son of Sam used in his murder spree. Why have revolvers not been banned due to these events?

A new way to troll my anti gun friends and family
I think I’ll try and find replicas of each the 38 charter and the 44 bull dog just to have and point out to my liberal anti gun friends

  13. Oko yono, she’s way cool.
    Introduced John to bisexuality.
    Come Together.
I’d like to dirty the sheets with her.
3ways Rock my socks, trips my trigger.
    Gets my gun.
    Fun is fun.
    .
Take me home to Paradise City

  14. When you think of people that “need to be shot”….

Lennon was right up there….practically asking for a bullet

Thank God he’s dead……we can slowly forget his miserable ‘art’ over the generations

    • I think John Lennon was a poet and songwriter. The music was a change from the songs of the time. If you read his poetry his ideas are so different. I was16 and it changed my life. My husband was in Vietnam and Give peace a chance motivated me to demonstrate for peace. You had to be there.
