“‘We call these two men beasts. These men are beasts,’ (Miami PD spokeswoman Kenia Reyes told the Miami Herald. ‘They storm inside the house. A little girl was asleep when she was surprised by the gunfire. The father was just trying to protect her.'” That father was Maurice Harris and he died defending his wife and daughter from two home invaders last week. wsvn.com reports that “Harris told the robbers they had no money. The men then held his wife to the floor at gunpoint and started to walk towards their 11-year-old daughter’s bedroom  . . .

Harris struggled with the suspects to keep them away from the room, and then he was shot. “The only thing they were saying was, ‘Money, we want money,’ and we kept on telling them we don’t have any money,” said Harris’ wife, Shakila Stewart.

As if anyone needed another reason to home carry,

“[The robbers] will stop at nothing to get what they want,” said Miami Police Department Detective Confessor Gonzalez. “The motive is clearly a robbery; it is a home invasion robbery. The sanctity of their home was violated, and it can’t get much worse than this.”

Neighbors are now hailing Harris as a hero. “Unfortunately, he died, but he’s super dad,” said Terry Jones. “I hope I have that much courage if something like that would’ve happened to me.”

We hope it never comes to that. But if it does, despite all those who say only the police should have access to guns, we hope Mr. Jones has a firearm handy.

    • +1 for home carry. There’s a 15 minute response time for where I live and I definitely wish to make that 15 minutes hell on Earth for whomever mistakenly decides our home’s an easy target…

    • Articles like this do nothing but reinforce my decision to home carry. Now when I’m home the G-20 goes in the bedside drawer and the Taurus 709 goes in my pocket.

      • May I respectfully suggest a quick-open safe bolted to the floor or wall beside the bed instead of the drawer? Visiting kids might find it; burglars certainly would. Those little electronic safes are an inexpensive precaution.

  1. I guess this dispels the argument that citizens who want to be armed are trying to compensate for a small penis.

This father did his best to protect his family and himself. Unfortunately, his bare hands were no match for two men much less two men that were armed. Shame on the citizen disarmament advocates for degrading fathers who want to be able to protect their family from violent criminals.

  2. I saw this last week, brave man, did what a man should do, too bad he didn’t have a gun handy, it might have been 2 dead BGs instead of 1 dead hero. Prayers or positive thoughts for the family.

  3. Another Petit family. The number grows. Listen to the mikeyb’s and lbd and hmmmmmer and you too can be a canditate for the helpless victims award.

And if the bad guys had had machetes instead of guns? Like they do in England. Think Rwanda. Machetes and numbers presents a problem best solved with a shotgun and a handgun.

England has become the trailer park of Europe.

    • Yep. And when the Bulgarian/Rumanian UK immigration rules change this summer, it’s going to become the Violent Hobo Camp of Europe.

    • Weird. I almost never watch TV yet I was at a friend’s home and watched an episode of Law & Order. The episode featured Whoopi Goldberg as an evil and manipulating foster mom of now grown men sending them forth to rob and murder wealthy families with machetes. It was gruesome.

    • I hate to burst your bubble, but we get barely one “victim hacked to death by a machete-wielding mob” a year, and the victims tend to be ineligible for CCW even by US rules (some by age, others by criminality) – also, these tend to happen in places that in the US would be those oh-so-wonderful “gun free zones”.

You hear more about awful crimes in the UK than about murders in French banlieus or German skinheads beating immigrants to death; because our news publishes in English, not because we have more incidents than others.

I certainly wouldn’t suggest the UK as a solution for the US to imitate, but US solutions don’t work well on our problems either.

      • Missed the point Jason. When the machete wielders decide to up the ante, what then? If you’re one of the ones being attacked by people with machetes or golf clubs or kitchen knives how do you protect yourself and any you care about.

True, England and America are apples and oranges. But people are the same regardless of country. If you have no real method of dealing with violent predatory types then you are just a victim waiting for his number to come up.

        • JWM,

For the machete wielders to “up their game” there need to be more of them, striking more often, and they need to go from attacking children in train stations or outside schools in very defined areas (the most usual cases, where gang fights go lethal – usually killers and victim are all under 18) to targeting homeowners in safe suburbs.

If the risk escalates, then I’ll take up clay pigeon shooting, or possibly black powder handguns, in order to have a firearm reasonably ready to hand. (If money and time permit I might do so anyway, but I’m at more risk from urban foxes than machete-wielding mobs here)

We don’t have the threat levels in most of the UK that would make even a hoplophile like me feel a need for a defensive firearm (not that any weapon I owned would ever be for that purpose, oh no – “sporting, recreational and target shooting on an approved range for which a safety certificate has been granted and not revoked” was what it said on my Firearm Certificate) and the available options, while functional, aren’t intrinsically interesting enough to me to pursue for a hobby: we invented semi-automatic weapons for the good reason they’re more fun…

  4. I guess this dispels the argument that citizens who want to be armed are trying to compensate for their uniquely male anatomy.

  5. I found this article online and if it is true its pretty damn scary. Obama is laying the framework to purge online opponents. Basically anyone who does not obey his every command on gun control can and will most likely be labeled a homegrown terrorist. They will use the Internet to find these people. Pretty soon any pro gun website or Facebook page will probably be deemed a terrorist organization, including TTAG and all its commenters. This is from the official WhiteHouse fact paper

Our focus is on providing communities with information for staying safe online from individuals who are trying to encourage others to commit acts of violence.

I wonder if DGU articles will be put into this category? Or any article that calls gun control civilian disarmament? Because standing up for your rights and the constitution is disobedience and could be an act of violence according to Obama.

  6. I wonder if we would be better off REQUIRING Firearm ownership and training. Sure, bad guys would get the same information but at least it would level the playing field for everyone…

    From the article
The Obama Administration has already caused the alarm bells to ring on several occasions as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released several internal memos referring to conservative Christians who believe the Bible, pro-life citizens who are against abortion, Tea Party activists, and political conservatives who believe in a strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution as “potential homegrown terrorists.”

And in the current gun rights debate, sovereign citizens have gone on the record to oppose the Obama administration’s all-out assault on the Second Amendment, vowing to disobey any law that would violate their unfettered rights to keep and bear firearms.

I wonder if DGU articles will be put into this category? Or any article that calls gun control civilian disarmament? Because standing up for your rights and the constitution is disobedience and could be an act of violence according to Obama.

    • Censorship. Taking the constitution apart is not limited to 2a. We, the People of the Gun, know this. That’s why we’re in this fight. It’s the rank and file followers of the other side that we need to reach. So their leaders try to limit the spread of info.

  8. This happened in a “red” state. OMG. Tell the Republicans they need to fix Florida. It has been going to crap for years. Can’t wait for someone to blame Obama for this.

  9. I was saddened to read about this brave father giving his life for his family. I simply am at a loss at any man not having a gun to protect his loved ones. If any creeps broke into our home, they would be met with a hail of bullets, including .45, 38 special, 9 mm and .22 (shooters including me, my wife and my two daughters, 11 and 9). The whole family practices regularly at the range. And for early warning of a break-in? The two loudest, barkingest, most bad-tempered toy poodles on the planet.

  10. Just an “acceptable loss” to the brady suicide club. I don’t think as many people are buying their mantra, you know, that death thing & all, Randy
