Hate crime or opportunistic mugging, the result is the same. Of course, Marquez was in our nation’s capital when the attack occurred — a place where gun rights go to die — so armed self defense wasn’t an option (legally). But based Marquez’s bio, he may not have been much of a 2A fan anyway.
Marquez made an unsuccessful 2014 run for Congress as a Democrat in California.
We don’t know a lot of California Dems who think much of the right to keep and bear arms. Then again, to paraphrase an old saw, if a gun rights supporter is just a gun controller who’s been mugged, we may have a new convert.

He was apparently hit from behind, and somewhat “out of the blue”. A handgun may not have helped. A handgun, combined with greater situational awareness may have possibly helped. – I don’t know. Either way, the fact that D.C. disarms it’s residents is deeply evil.

The failure in logic here is that it always seems to be that a DGU is considered a single person event.
The failure of gun free zones and gun free cities and gun free societies is that the criminals feel empowered by being the only people other than an occasional policeman who have and are willing to use firearms.
The point of the RKBA is that no one, especially criminals, knows for certain how many firearms are in the vicinity to defend against criminal predation. Even with open carry you can’t know how many concealed carriers may also be present. In this environment random attacks by empowered thugs would be rare since they would not be so certain that even if their prey was unarmed any number of bystanders, black or white, could or would come to his defense.
I had a very similer experience at a taco bell in Hayward CA about 20 years ago. Except that I was illegally carrying a revolver and the young mexican thugs nearly trampled each other getting away from me.

Yes, if you are unarmed, the best thing to do is seek a public place, not leave one. If you are trying to escape, try running, not walking. The thing to do in this case is, go to the manager and have him call 911. With your back to the wall for protection, move quickly side to side and use some of that Marine CORPS training to inflict as much pain on the attackers as possible one at a time. If they insist continuing the assault, the police may get there in time to finish the ass whooping for you.
The video was just released. The Marine was completely cold cocked from behind. The numerous witnesses that stood there and watched this happen disgust me. It looks like a few bystanders got a shot in for good measure as opposed to helping. One was taking on the phone and turned away.
The suspected perps were very young. Where are the parents? If my kid did this to another person of any color unprovoked the least of his worries would be the police. Not quite my situation as a middle schooler. Flag football at Sportsman park in LA. Hit in the back of my head, turned around and am confronted by a group 5-6 kids a little younger than me. Turned and ran like hell along a building. Cleared the building corner and turned back to see them in single file behind me with the kid who hit me in front. Planted myself and decked him with a punch to the jaw. Second kid grabs my shirt says “I got him” decked him with a punch to the jaw. Ran across through traffic on Century Bivd and they declined to follow through traffic. Walked home with my eyes checking behind me. Park is now called Jesse Owens Park.
