While I applaud The Llama for making an effort to use a backstop something tells me that a stack of old textbooks won’t stand up to much abuse. And what if they missed, slinging lead into who knows where? Speaking of lead, something tells me you shouldn’t be exposing your food to the delicious seasoning that is gun shot residue —  which is exactly what they’re doing by firing so close to their freezer.

  1. How did natural selection let this even happen? His family tree should have chopped itself down back when our ancestors were still dragging their knuckles and living in caves….

  2. It’s actually not as stupid as it seems. Three phone books back to back will stop a .50 BMG at relatively close range, and it looks like they have quite a stack of them taped together.

As to lead/sulphur/etc seasoning– parts per million at best, and not for long as they’re heavy elements. Unless you do that sort of thing quite often and eat off the floor, you’ve got a better chance of getting sick at your local fast food joint.

  3. IGOTD. There are so many problems with this, it’s hard to know where to start.

Lead poisoning is a serious problem with any indoor shooting range, especially an unventilated, er, office like this one. Most primers contain lead styphnate as their primary ignition material. They’re less toxic than old mercury-fulminate primers (sort of) but they’re still made of, well, lead. And they fill the air with lead fumes and particles that have to be ventilated away quickly before you filter them all out with the lining of your sinuses and lungs.

Lead exposure causes mental problems and intellectual dysfunction, which is probably how this turd-sniffer became so stupid in the first place.

And then there’s his choice of ‘backstop.’ Thick bundled paper is an excellent bullet-catching material, but it makes a shitty backstop. If it’s edge-on, the bullet will tunnel between the pages and zip out the other side. If it has already soaked up several bullets (like this douchebag shows) it becomes confetti and it doesn’t stop bullets worth a shit.

Finally, these bundled textbooks are too small to be considered a ‘backstop’ at all. Backstops are what catch your bullets *after* they perforate your target, or after you miss the target completely. This ass-hat’s ‘backstop’ is two thin sheets of drywall, followed by the room on the other side.

After passing the bar exam, my buddies and I duct-taped up our bar exam study guides and shot the shit out of them. One of my friends even bayonted the blasted study books until they were nothing but duct-taped wisps of confetti with laminated book covers. Then we returned the shredded tomes for a partial refund. The publisher didn’t care about the condition of the books themselves; they only wanted them back so that starving law students like us wouldn’t re-sell them to other even starving-er law students. They took the books and gave us our money, but the look on the publisher rep’s face was beyond priceless.

  4. but i must say that packed paper is tougher than one might think. If you are using handguns that is.Has anybody seen when Mythbusters used phonebooks to bulletproof cars.

  5. If you guys get this huffy at someone using a 9mm into a wad of paper, I can only imagine how you’d bust a nut if you saw gunsmiths fire high powered rifles into a snail trap.

  6. When my dad bought his glock he brought me down into the basement, threw a big bag of kitty litter into a trash can and said shoot at that. I popped off two into it. Despite being defensive 9mm rounds neither one left the trash can. Not saying its a great idea but a lot of things you wouldn’t expect stop a gunshot.
