Since the Parkland shooting, many teachers have decided that passive resistance and relying on someone else to provide school security is no longer an option. Hundreds of them nationwide have received training as districts decide to allow teachers to defend themselves and their students from potential shooters using firearms.

So you’ll probably understand why advocates of teachers having the option to carry guns won’t be thanking Sean Simpson any time soon.

Not the most normal sight: a gun left in the bathroom stall.

But that’s exactly what went down on Sunday in a men’s room at the Deerfield Beach Pier.

The circumstances of how the Glock 9mm got there are unusual.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the weapon was left by Sean Simpson. If his name sounds familiar, he’s the teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas who said he’d be willing to arm himself while on duty.

Mr. Simpson probably would have benefitted from this video.

Unfortunately . . .

According to the sheriff’s office report, Simpson told deputies he’d left his gun by accident. By the time the chemistry teacher realized his mistake, the Glock was already in the hands of a drunk homeless man who had picked it up and fired. The bullet hit a wall.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Simpson was able to grab the gun away from the vagrant, Joseph Spataro, who was charged with firing a weapon while intoxicated and trespassing.

As for the MSD teacher, he was arrested and charged with failing to safely store a firearm, a second-degree misdemeanor. Simpson posted a $250 cash bond and was released.

According to the report, he won’t face any repercussions at work because of the charge. The fact that this little incident happened just two days before the Broward School Board unanimously rejected a proposal to arm teachers in its schools is probably just an unhappy coincidence. But for his conspicuous lack of attention to the whereabouts of his loaded firearm, Sean Simpson is our irresponsible gun owner of the day.

  1. Cops do it all the time …. Free pass. Pennsylvania Democrats are opposing armed teachers proposals at the Harrisburg gun law hearings this week and next.
They say … a special needs student ‘ might ‘ become obsessed with taking it from a teacher. The Gun Safe Idea Never Entered Their Minds — Steve McCarter , Dem. Montgomery County.

    • I remarked if school administrators are so afraid of guns being used in a rage or stolen they should install gun safes. Someone commented that gun safes would be too expensive, even if there were only a few in every school so we should take away guns instead. I did the math quickly and equipping schools with safes would cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Trying to confiscate guns runs up to the hundreds of billions of dollars. The next argument was that guns don’t belong in schools, even if they save lives and have no risk because…guns.

  2. It’s not uncommon for cops to leave their guns in bathrooms. If you ever worked for some time at a place that sells food, you might have seen how cops leave their gun in the stall. It’s probably the number one way cops lose their guns.

  3. Thank goodness he got his gun back and also thank God that no one was injured when a vagrant discharged the weapon. As gun carriers we need to be very careful and think about what we’re doing and never forget we have a gun on our person no matter what we’re doing.

This will become an issue in the future as teachers will in fact be new gun owners, new gun carriers. They will not have the experience of other people had in the past so they’re training really needs to emphasize the importance of weapons security, weapons retention.

    • Collin Noir did a vid on this very topic: public restrooms being a very gun-unfriendly place. This circumstance is not at all unusual – drop your drawers to take a dump and your gun falls out… or you take it off and place it on top of the toilet… just another reason I hate and avoid using public restrooms as much as possible.
Moreover – the story I read was the drunk hobo fired the gun at the wall “to see if it was loaded”… pitiful.

    • Literally have the gun tied to them via a lanyard. The military does that so they don’t lose their sidearm.

Teachers should carry concealed, use hollowpoints, have a lanyard and no round in the chamber.

      • Any pistol with a trigger lighter than my hammer fired ruger p89, might be a problem for a new gun owner. I’m uncomfortable with not having a round in the chamber. But Iike the lanyard on my p89!

  4. Use a damn active retention holster, FFS!.and How the Fck do you forget your firearm when you leave the restroom.
First of all Don’t shit in public, get on a shit schedule. I’ve shit in public once in 12 years because I got food poisoning. I wear a belt loop holster with a safariland ALS holster then roll the waist band into my pants so my pistol ain’t flopping around in no mans land.
second I shit at the same time everyday, get up at 8am drink 2 cups of coffee, shave, shit and shower at 9am sharp clock in at work at 10.
THERE”S NO EXCUSE FOR LOSING YOUR G-D GUN IN A PUBLIC TOILET!!!!!!!
Idiots like this make us all look stupid.

  5. “As for the MSD teacher, he was arrested and charged with failing to safely store a firearm, a second-degree misdemeanor…”

Reasonable to me, especially in light of the fact that he not only forgot his gun but did so in such a negligent way that someone gained access to it and endangered everyone around him.

How hard is this, people? If you’re sitting down you put it in your pants between your legs so you can’t leave without it but it’s hidden from view (although your holster might not be if you’re carrying OWB).

  6. What exactly are these people doing that requires removing their firearms in the bathroom? I must have been using the toilet wrong this whole time.

  7. I’ve never really understood why people unholster when taking a deuce but maybe I’m missing something?

The only time I unholster during the day is at the gym, putting my heater in my locker and that’s only because I change my pants when I’m done with my morning gym routine. I don’t really worry about theft because I’m in and out of the gym before most people are even out of bed so other than some old guys, that I know all of, there’s no one there to steal or even see my gun.

    • When I drop trou for the potty, my pants fall below the level of most stalls and I don’t want my gun to be visible.

      • Why would you care unless you live in some state where OC is illegal? Afraid the crack ninjas are gonna slip under the stall, jack your gat and use it against you?

  8. Perhaps it was a Freudian slip? Left the s*** in the bathroom? If Hondas fit in bathrooms, I’m sure more of them would be left too. Just sayin

  9. Charged with a misdeamnor, probably on probation for a year. No guns for him for awhile, ( government legal that is) smoke em if you got em.

  10. There are plenty of other pluses and minuses, but the rest room problem pretty much disappears with pocket carry. In a decent holster, of course.

    • I just switched to a shoulder holster a few months ago. I like it a lot better than the OWB I had been using with a much lighter gun. Bathrooms problems are eliminated. Getting into cars is much less problematic as well. Plus my 5.25″ .357 is concealed well enough that it has not yet been spotted at work (I don’t have an office or cube) where I do all sorts of things that would have caused a belt gun to be spotted I think. I am surprised at how well it conceals. My workplace doesn’t have a rule against carrying as far as I know but I never asked about it either.
It is a bit slower draw though that is a bit concerning to tell the truth.

  11. I wanted to post earlier but, every time I start typing I begin uncontrollably laughing at some of these posts, not at the incident –which is truly sad.

This about and/or ‘to’ every/anyone carrying and possibly forgetting to secure their gun. We are not talking about forgetting a smartphone, if there is the slightest possibility that your plate/brain is so full, that you cannot remember the responsibility of securing your weapon, gun or other, you truly do not need to be carrying any weapon that is not ‘naturally’ a part of your anatomy; never mind carrying on school grounds or any other heavily populated area.

  12. On February 5th an Okaloosa County, Florida School Resource officer left their gun in a school bathroom as well. Not only can I not seem to find her name having been released, nor any stories about charges being filed, she was allowed to continue to work both that day and going forward while this was investigated. I am guessing an administrative slap on the wrist was all she got. I’m not against charges for being dumb or understanding and leniency. I am against double standards and selective enforcement.

  13. When he was interviewed after the killings at Parkland, Sean Simpson was quoted as favoring banning all “semi-automatic weapons.” Surprising that he didn’t mention at the time that he was an owner of a semi-automatic and if he favored banning them, why had he not disposed of it? Or did he just go out and buy this Glock after the shootings and get his concealed carry permit in order to stage this little charade?
